We worked with A well respected contractor and he worked with a Horner sales person. The sales person came to measure the windows and pushed the wrong button when ordering them so they were ordered without the nailing flange. This literally set off a six week delay in my project with my siding stripped off. Then Instead of ordering the proper windows they negotiated with Kolbe for a aftermarket fix designed by Kolbe. No matter how many times my contractor or I attempted to interact with one or we were ignored and treated disrespectfully. They waited to admit their mistake at six months after the initial computer ordering error that they made. I still have two windows that leak and the contractor is not able to Get assistance from Horner. The managers who came out to the house were rude and accusatory in spite of them making a massive error. > > All of the subcontractors had to move on to other jobs while the siding was ripped off and we waited for windows. Initially we had six leaking windows. The contractor has gone to fix them but we don’t have any written guarantee from Kolbe Even though we were promised that when I eventually allow them to install the retro fitted engineered flanges which were supposed to be 100% guaranteed by Kolbe. I even tried to phone Horner and asked to speak to management and they kept rerouting me back to the same disrespectful middle-management person. I tried to reach out on LinkedIn to see if I could reach a C level person with no success. We are a year and a half after the project, still have leaking windows and issues with noise inside house through windows. We never had an apology and they did not take responsibility until we had proof that their salesperson ordered the product incorrectly. > > We were exceptionally patient and attempted for months to work with them and they treated us as a nuisance. There was one worker who came out to the site and attempted to evaluate and fix a few smaller items. He was lovely and clearly felt bad that we had been completely treated as if we had done something wrong... > Oh yeah and we ordered all new int and exterior door from them as well. Some were delivered with the door without the frame( although I was accused of lying about this they later agreed it was an error). Thank you in advance! A: Thanks for your question. These cabinets were custom made in our shop. The recess panel on the doors was removed, like a cut for glass door. We made a wooden frame and stretched perforated speaker cloth around the frame and fastened from the backside of the door. In certain applications we would use a vinyl mesh and paint it to match the cabinetry. TThat process is more prone to wrinkle, butt allows for airflow and sound to pass through, and some remotes function through the mesh. Hope this helps. **Q: Metal Spiral Staircase - Riser / Toe-Kick Retrofit for Dog Safety?** *(in Home Repair)* Hi I'm moving into a 2 story house that just has a little metal spiral staircase like the photo below. I also have a couple small dogs 5 lbs and 10 lbs. My 2 dogs are pretty adventurous like to climb normal stairs already and run around the house a lot. Anyways I wanted to possibly retrofit the spiral staircase to make it more safe. It just seems like the gap between the steps could lead to injury. I think that gap is called the "riser" or "Toe-kick" Any recommendations for keeping it safe for the little furry ones? A: We just did this stair with oil rubbed bronze risers - an option that would fit in with the style of your spiral. **Q: Help Updating Red Oak Trim, Stairwell, & Golden Yellow Wood Cabinets** *(in Smaller Homes)* Hello! This is our new home and it's close to the beach and fog (it's 1 mile away and the home faces East and the back faces West). We have to mind moisture, sand, kids, and a promised future dog. My husband and kids surf. I want to put one unifying floor down (but can't change the stairwell) and love hardwood but my husband is opposed, saying that I will never let the kids nor him enter the home with a drop of water wet or speck of sand or live without constant worry about damaging the floors. I want to update the golden warm hues of the red oak but I worry about painting wood since it is wood after all and people say don't do it (I'm still inclined to paint at least some of it). I enjoy fresh, beachy, modern, boho, clean lines/mid-century decor. Advice on flooring types, colors, tone (dark, light, grey, finish? Bamboo? Hardwood? Luxury Vinyl Plank? (with cork or underlayment so it's not so hollow/loud to the touch?) I'd prefer natural products but I've read luxury vinyl plank would be good given our application and all our variables. I don't want tile because it would be too cold for those extremely foggy cold nights. Need help and expert advice pretty please! A: We suggest replacing your traditional balusters with square painted ones and box newels. Painting the risers white will add to your beachfront feel as well. **Q: Glass Stair Railing** *(in Building a Home)* What do I need to know about options for a glass stair railing? We're nearing the end of our build and just realized, thanks to Houzz, that the cable railings we were planning are a terrible idea in a house with small children. We're using a high-end custom builder so I'm confident our site supervisor will be on top of things but I'd like to know what to ask for. Our stairs are a double u-shape, up to the 2nd floor and down to the basement, with a wall on one side in both directions. I assume the glass has to be tempered. Is there a certain thickness I should be looking for? What are the options for securing the glass in place? Our stairs will have a knee wall on the open size and the treads are closed. It seems like in some cases there are clips and in some there's a recess in the knee wall that the glass is set into. Is one option better than the other? I've attached pics of the look we like in terms of the knee wall and type of handrail, etc. Thank you! And most importantly thanks to everyone who has posted previously about how dumb cable railings are with kids. A: 3/8" or 1/2" tempered glass are the most common sizes. Clips are more cost-effective than recessed. **Q: Retractable screen for Cover Glass system** *(in Porches & Decks)* Hi there, I'm sorry if this has already been answered, however I am getting a Cover Glass patio door system where you can open up part or all of the glass wall as it is in sections that rotate open and stack. I would like to find a screen system that doesn't automatically retract like Phantom. I have seen some that open part of the way and stay put so I can open the doors partway. Does anyone have any suggestions of what might work with this Cover Glass door system? A: I see that you do not a screen that automatically retracts like Phantom - is it because you want it stay partially open? Phantom does have 'stoppers' that can be installed along the track so it doesn't fully retract. **Q: Windows** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are building a new home and we are so confused by window brands. They all get awful reviews. How do I find out which window is the best for us. We are building a moderately priced contemporary and do not want wood windows. Please help! A: I think the first step is to talk to a qualified rep about the benefits of wood, vinyl, aluminum clad, or pvc to see which is best for your home/environment.
