> We ended up contacting Jim and Courthouse Design/Build after a very disappointing experience with another big design/build firm in the area. We showed Jim the previous plans for our redesign and he immediately identified where they could be improved. He created design plans from scratch and then undertook a comprehensive remodel and reconfiguration of the first level of our NW DC row home, including a completely renovated kitchen, a relocated powder room, new floors, and more. We ended up with a beautiful, sophisticated renovation that made our living space much more functional while preserving the charm and historic character of the home. Jim's team was professional and always provided high-quality work, and communication throughout the process was clear. We highly recommend Courthouse Design/Build!

> I hired Linea Design Build after interviewing several design/build companies to essentially redesign/rebuild the front porch. Jim is an excellent person to work with, he listens and then provides expert design ideas and, as importantly, expert and timely execution of that design. The design and the materials used were in keeping with the age of the house and absolutely gave my house an enormous facelift and curb appeal! Nestor and Eric are top of the line carpenters/craftsmen, with amazing attention to detail and are a pleasure to work with. Everyone working on the house takes a great deal of care and, honestly, since the work was in a heavily planted area, I was very pleasantly surprised the plants escaped unharmed. The work was done beautifully, communication was great and I could not be more pleased with the results. I would highly recommend this company and would happily hire them in the future.

> We have hired Jim Gardiner and Courthouse Design/Build multiple times over the last several decades to perform major renovations, including our master bath and kitchen. More recently, we wanted to upgrade our refrigerator to a new built-in style that required some modifications to the surrounding space, so we called Jim and he and his team were able to help overcome some pesky manufacturer supply issues and challenging dimensions to provide a wonderful new installation.

**★★★★★ — Gene Hiigel, Aug. 2024**

> We have used Jim Gardiner and his team at Courthouse Design/Build for the past four years in renovating the kitchen and three bathrooms in our 1857 Georgetown house and have nothing but good to say about them and their work. Before work began, Jim took the time to sit down with us to determine what we wanted the end result of each project to be and to map out ways to make the completed project meet those goals. An older house always throws up unforeseen difficulties once the work begins, but Jim or his team was always able to come up with some innovative work-around.
>
> The actual renovation work was done in a timely and careful manner. Nestor and Eric are top-of-the-line workers and just like Jim, pay close attention to the details and look for ways to improve the final project. We were also very happy with the specialized trades that Jim works with such as plumbers and electricians. Care was taken by all to protect the areas of the house that were not being worked on and everything was clean and organized at the end of every work day.
>
> We really cannot say more about how happy we have been with each of these series of projects and after having lived with the results for a few years continue to be quite happy.

**★★★★★ — Alice Tornquist, Aug. 2024**

> We contracted Courthouse Design/Build to thoroughly redesign and renovate our downstairs living area, to include a custom bar and wine storage area, not to mention various other upgrades, including a multi-level lighting overhaul as well as exterior stone work. Their work was top notch. Jim Gardiner provided some unique design ideas that elevated our original concept for the project. Jim's teams are all professional and produce high quality results. Our new living space has transformed how we enjoy our home and we could not be happier with it!

**★★★★★ — Cliff-Bev Jacobs, Aug. 2024**

> We live in a highrise condominium building in the Rosslyn section of Arlington, VA. In 2013, we hired Jim Gardiner of Courthouse Design/Build to fully renovate our kitchen, and Jim’s team did a wonderful job. Over the last several years, we returned to Jim and his skilled team at Courthouse Design/Build to execute a dramatic, phased makeover of the full remainder of our 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo unit, including our large interior balcony. The results have been spectacular, and we could not be more pleased. Jim and his team are experts at working in the highrise environment, and their interface with our building facilities and management team went smoothly in all regards. Our balcony, living spaces and bathrooms are now fabulous. Jim’s team handled everything, even including all new lighting, furniture and decorating, and the final product has been absolutely transformative for how we enjoy our home.

**★★★★★ — Andy Ferguson, Aug. 2024**

> Jim Gardiner and his team did everything, from soup to nuts, with excellent taste and the highest standards of craftsmanship and professionalism. The design and renovation covered all of my first floor living area, from the entertainment center and built-in book shelves to the bar, living room, and family room, including paint, flooring, and lighting. They even resolved a structural problem I had with my porch stairs and decking. Once work began it was done quickly and efficiently.

**★★★★★ — HU-30238934, Aug. 2024**

> Jim and his team redesigned and renovated much of our main floor - bathroom, main bedroom, and hallway - with a number of clever ( and beautiful) changes that made it exceptional.

**★★★★★ — Joanne Zurcher, Aug. 2024**

> We hired Jim’s team at Courthouse Design/Build to design and build out an altogether new master suite, upstairs hallway and stairs in our Arlington Cape Cod, with the work involving major structural improvements and alterations. Not only was the work product excellent but every night our work site was cleaned thoroughly and without exception. We will hire Jim and his crew again!

**★★★★★ — Jeffrey Sabloff, Jan. 2023**

> Courthouse Design recently remodeled my kitchen, and did various exterior roofing work, and did a beautiful job. They were skilled, so professional and always easy to work with. From choosing materials, to construction and finishing work Jim Gardiner's team was extraordinary. I couldn't be happier with my new kitchen.

**★★★★★ — Teresa Williams, Jan. 2023**

> THRILLED with the team at Courthouse Design/Build and the finished project. Jim and his crew were honest, communicative, always on time, CLEAN, kind, professional, highly skilled and creative, well-connected with other vendors/subcontractor, and cared for our home at every stage of the project. We would not hesitate to work with them again.

**★★★★★ — Guy Razzi, July 2019**

> We had an outdated 20+ year old kitchen and adjacent powder room that we wanted to totally reconfigure. Jim did an excellent job with his knowledge and attention to detail. He and his staff and crew did a great job of building out the design.
>
> And a couple years prior to that Courthouse redid an old upstairs typical Arlington post-war era bathroom with great results.

**★★★★★ — Anne Garnier, June 2019**

> We live in a high-rise condominium in McLean and hired Courthouse Design/Build to re-design, reconfigure and remodel our master and hall bathrooms, our foyer, and to upgrade various doors throughout our condominium. Jim Gardiner and his staff got the job because of their unique design ideas and the quality of their work. We are very pleased with the results. The pricing was fair and we received excellent value for our investment.

**★★★★★ — Ann Bendersky, June 2019**

> Quality, Quality, Quality! We have nothing but the highest recommendations for Courthouse Design/Build. We originally hired them over 20 years ago to perform a luxury remodel of our master bath. We met with Courthouse for many design sessions before the actual construction began. Jim Gardiner, the owner walked us through many design concepts, while keeping our design goals and budget constraints in mind. Every cost and step of the process was explained in detail. There were no hidden costs and the promised finished time-line was kept. Jim had a great work team, whom we totally entrusted by allowing them access to our home when we were not there. We could not have been more pleased with the outcome and our master bath was admired by many of our neighbors. We liked Courthouse so much that 10 years later we hired them again for a complete remodel of our main floor. We had a pretty clear vision of what we wanted in the remodel, but with Jim's expertise and guidance, the outcome exceeded our expectations. Once again, we had complete trust in Jim's work team and allowed them full access to the house when we were not there. The remodel stands today without any changes and anyone who sees it has only the highest compliments. Again in 2019 we hired Courthouse for a new back deck and front patio/walkway. Both are simply lovely and very unique designs. We are close to a park pathway and receive compliments weekly from people passing by. We can't say enough good things about Courthouse and will hire them again the next time we have another remodel.

**★★★★★ — Sharon Z, June 2019**

> Courthouse Design Build did a complete renovation of my very old bathroom. The work required a tear down to the studs that revealed unique challenges due to the age of the plumbing that needed to be replaced. Jim came up with creative and smart solutions to work through the issues. My new bathroom is beautiful and much more functional and I enjoy using it every day.

**★★★★★ — Derek Radoski, June 2019**

> We contracted for a full Design / Build which included Interior and exterior with Courthouse. Selected his design over architectural firms design as his provided for increased value and updating while others did not look at entirety of the project. This included a new master, new kitchen, three new bathrooms, walk in closet, windows, front entry way addition, masonry work to match existing, hard scape. Courthouse handled the entire project from conceptual design to final design to implementation and permits as well as final closeout. By far provided the most realistic over all complete project budget upfront. Was able to work with in our construction loan and worked with us along with Mclean Mortgage for progress payments based on task completion. Bottom line the interior and exterior of our house is beautiful.

**★★★★★ — Debb Ziegler, April 2015**

> We were so please with Courthouse's superb and professional kitchen remodel. We wanted an updated quality cabinetry re-using the granite that we love and had installed a few years earlier. They understood all our requirements and were willing to work with them. Our budget was only exceeded by the extras that we inevitably requested. The workmen and workmanship were impeccable. We could not have been happier. Jim guided us through great choices and the installers were delightful. They showed up on time, cleaned up daily, stayed on schedule, and returned for the final touches that required a slightly longer window to complete. We could not say enough good things about their work!

**★★★★★ — Ina Bedke, Jan. 2015**

> Created innovative design to change an "old" floor plan of small boxy spaces into an "open" space with great flow - AND - Remodeled large condominium (built in 1981)
> \- kitchen completely redone, cabinets, plumbing, lighting, appliances
> \- moved walls, created closets, opened doorways, installed sliding/pocket doors,
> \- created a sumptuous spa master bath, with huge shower for two with 2 showerheads
> \- updated one bathroom, and completely renovated 2 others,
> \- created the perfect bar/sitting space to highlight the open concept (wet bar, icemaker, refrigerator)
> \- unique decorative stone wall, mosaic detail, arched display area
> \- wood flooring laid in an unusual diagonal pattern, curved slate floors in master bath
> \- completely reworked the lighting plans and electrics, adding customized display walls/areas
>
> Can't possibly say enough good things about Jim Gardiner - excellent "eye" for detail, a creative outlook, willing to engage in new ideas, and very adaptive to the customer's wishes (even when we didn't know how to make our notions real, he managed to take our unclear wishes and tone it down/or ramp it up so that we would get the effects we wanted). I interviewed many design/build firms in the area - and soon realized that no one had a lock on a great price - everyone came to about the same dollar estimate. For us, the fact that he was the only one who asked to see our current apartment (so that he could gauge our style) BEFORE he saw the condo we wanted to renovate, was a thoughtful quality we were very impressed with - and put him ahead right from the beginning.
>
> We have now been in our condo for almost a year, and there is not a single thing we would change - we did have the luxury of time (living in our apt until all the work was finished), but that creates other kinds of stress providing time to second-guess decisions. His suppliers were quite cooperative; the silestone in the kitchen was done twice, since the first effort did not match his standards which are high. The cabinetry company that he works with did some fabulous custom work that was impeccable. He also has a broad local network of specialists to call on -- really superb craftspeople to handle such items as granite selection, stone cutting, carpeting, glass shelving, custom countertops in unusual materials, even intricate electrical switching and other odd but useful arrangements that suited us.
>
> Jim was supportive and encouraging and his crew was wonderful. He was always reachable, and his prime guy-on-site Tim Starr (one of his leads) was meticulous, detail oriented, and a superb craftsman in any medium. He custom-built cabinets in our bar area, created perfect curves in a marble arch, laid the stone for the decorative wall, custom cut marble/slate floor in powder room, and took on various small projects that helped make this place the home we love!

**★★★★★ — norma311, June 2014**

> Jim Gardiner designed the remodel of our two bathrooms in 2002 and 2004. Jim was knowledgeable, helpful and dedicated to getting the job done right. I am certain that when we sell our home, the very attractive baths will be a strong selling point.

**★★★★★ — jarlington1, Jan. 2014**

> We had a 30 yr old kitchen that needed a complete rehab. It was a hard to expand kitchen because of the construction of the house and we wanted to keep the same footprint. Jim was very helpful in explaining all aspects of the jobs and pointed us in the direction of buying new appliance, backsplash, lighting and more.
>
> His crew was quick and clean with the removing the old cabinets etc. The whole project was perfectly coordinated and on-time. Jim's planning, design, execution, quality and follow up was superb!

**★★★★★ — mwisker, Jan. 2014**

> I gutted my kitchen and totally renovated. Purchased the cabinets from courthouse. They were professional and addressed my needs immediately. Excellent service, excellent product.

**★★★★★ — doozey1, Dec. 2013**

> Courthouse did three separate projects over a ten year period. A full kitchen renovation, a master bath full renovation, and a full bath renovation. all three were done by Kevin J, with design/ planning/ estimating done by Jim Gardiner. Quality of work was superb.

**★★★★★ — fghall, Dec. 2013**

> Courthouse replaced our old tired kitchen with a beautiful design that also functions effectively and efficiently. Courthouse's integrity and outstanding design sense made it a pleasure to work with this firm. Courthouse has been our contractor for the stylish renovation of three bathrooms. Later, when we needed a new kitchen, we went immediately to Courthouse. We have been extremely pleased with Courthouse's work.

**★★★★★ — kmjones, Dec. 2013**

> CKB was wonderful to work with. Professional, flexible, budget conscious, friendly and excellent quality work. It was a joy to have them in our home. We would recommend them to anybody. Our kitchen and master bath updates completely changed our home.

**★★★★★ — fhertz, Dec. 2013**

> Total remodel of bathroom. Courthouse was a pleasure to work with. THe work started on time and finished on time. Quality was the highest. I would never hesitate to give courthouse my best recommendation. They are the best in every way.

**★★★★★ — jacobs1982, Dec. 2013**

> Complete remodeling of kitchen. Provided consultation on design options, materials, and appliances. Removed and disposed of old kitchen, including appliances, installed new electric circuits as needed, installed all cabinets, counter tops, tile floor, molding, etc, took care of all required inspections and arranged for painters.

**★★★★★ — vannpearce, Dec. 2013**

> Courthouse Kitchens and Baths did a complete kitchen remodel for us. Jim Gardiner designed every aspect of our kitchen, and Kevin performed the remodel. We were 100& satisfied. Over 3 years later now the kitchen still looks beautiful.

**★★★★★ — fritz\_9999, Dec. 2013**

> Courthouse has done two fabulous kitchens and three baths for us. Great job. Can't say enough about the dedication of Courthouse folks and the practicality, utility, and creativity of Jim's advice and expertise. Jim's work helped us sell our previous house and made our present house a great place to live.
> The clarity of his insights and helpful of his advice makes Courthouse a great help.

**★★★★★ — januarygirl, Aug. 2013**

> We hired Courthouse Contractors, Inc. to remodel our kitchen. We worked worked with Jim Gardiner who was extremely professional to work with. He provided regular feedback, guidance and creative input which we found very helpful. He has stood behind his products and responded quickly when there was an issue with one of the cabinet doors, which was promptly replaced. We were very happy with the finished product...our new kitchen.

**★★★★★ — jernanjan, Aug. 2013**

> Courthouse Kitchens & Baths has done three major projects in our home - master bath in 2009, full kitchen in 2010, and lower level liiving area upgrade with full bath in 2011. All of these projects were completed on time and within budget. Jim Gardiner's design expertise and vision for the finished product were outstanding. He was an advisor to us, introducing us to new ideas and trends, while staying true to our personal tastes.
>
> The experience during each project was positive and we were kept informed on all aspects of the work. The workmanship and attention to detail was outstanding. We have recently sold our house and the highly complimentary comments of prospective buyers confirmed the quality of Courthouse Contractors' design concepts.
>
> We recommend Courthouse Contractors without reservation and look forward to working with them on future projects.

**★★★★★ — vdunn2, Feb. 2013**

> Courthouse Kitchens and baths completely remodeled my master bath suite and the finished product is nothing short of breath taking. My formerly tired and dated 80’s bathroom has become a retreat that causes jaws to drop when people enter the space. The room was taken down to the studs, walls were moved and curved, floors were exposed to the joists--no element was untouched. Jim Gardiner is a delight to work with, and his eye for elegance and style is unmatched. He literally sat on the floor and envisioned how to transform the space during the initial consultation and it changed the direction of what could have been an ordinary renovation into a project that is HGTV worthy. Every item in the bathroom is high end and reflects the impeccable taste of Jim and what I wanted. The function of the bathroom is also a testament of the marriage of style and taste.
>
> They tore out a clunky built-in jetted tub, that I never used and replaced it with a gorgeous free standing clawfoot tub that is stunning and the focal point of the room with an overhead chandelier, which I constantly use. The beautifully intricate mosaic shower with three heads, including a rainshower makes me linger longer in my shower. The Swarovski and polished nickel fixtures adds an extra dimension of luxe and make me very happy. The curved walls with architectural glass that floats in the wall provides diffused light and privacy. Jim was personally involved daily with the project and we made numerous trips to vendors to make sure every item was perfect for the space. The project manager for the job was fantastic and his craftsmanship was remarked upon enthusiastically by the people who came to inspect and approve each inspection phase. I recommend Jim and Courthouse for any project that you want elevate to the next level.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Stove hood** *(in Photo Questions)*

Love the hood. Is it custom made or ? Can it be made with copper?

Thanks so much,
Lindy

A: It is custom. We can make it any way you like. In all wood, it starts around $8000. With copper, it would be at least $12,000, all depending on size and details. Thank you for your interest.

**Q: What is the counter type and color? I have cherry cabinets.** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi. It is White Macaubas quartzite. These days, some lots are like this one... with pristine veining and very white color, but they are more rare than they used to be. Others are very dishwater gray with fuzzy veining, and that is the norm. You will pay a premium for the very white with clear grey/black veining, and you will want to allocate time to find it... these materials flow through the warehouses and fabricators in waves, and you just have to hit the right time and place to get something as beautiful as this piece. There is nothing else quite like premium White Macaubas, and its resistance characteristics are the best of any white quartzite I have seen (with none more white except the ones that look more like crystal ice). If you want the best chance of finding the best stone as quickly as possible, call Tara at Stone Source in Washington, DC at 202-265-5900. Stone Source maintains stock in warehouses in major cities around the country, and she can get you to the best White Macaubas available on the market anywhere. Stone Source curates their stone like no other distributor, and they can send your slabs of choice to any fabricator you like, anywhere. Thank you for your interest.

**Q: white cabinet color name?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the name of white cabinets? Brand/Name... thanks!

A: Hi. Made by Woodmode. They have many styles. This finish is Nordic White, an opaque stain... essentially looks just like a paint, only far superior over time. Thank you for your interest.

**Q: cab wood color** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the finish of the dark wood island? Is there a cabinet brand name?

A: It's Calacatta Gold Supreme marble, just a subtle set of slabs... not granite. The backsplash is a custom marble and glass mosaic.

**Q: Cabinets** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the cabinet color please.

A: Woodmode's Vintage White

**Q: Can I use your image in my blog page? Thanks** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Yes, as long as any commentary about the picture is thoroughly positive. No negativity, please. Thank you.
