We specialize in all aspects of Interior and Exterior decorative painting. Our team consists of co-owners and talented artists, New Mexico raised Virginia Fair and Boston born Jay Richards. Virginia Fair Studios specializes in creating beautiful murals, faux painting, hand painted fabrics, furniture restoration and a verity of decorative finishes. Although we do large scale projects, we also do small repairs and restoration and there are no projects too big or too small for us. We also work on furniture-antiquing, distressing, detailing, re-facing, etc. Usually the client is at the mercy of their friend's ideas and opinions, in conjunction with their own ideas of what works in their home. It can save hours and days of mistakes for both us and them just by having a thorough consultation. Even if that means we give the client homework to collect photos in magazines and books or off the Internet so we start to get a sense of what their taste and style is. We work with the client, finding what really works for them, and it is our job to make sure it is aesthetic. Every project starts with the initial conversation with the client or the designer over the phone to give us an idea of what is needed and wanted, and from there we can sometimes start our homework by creating samples or using samples from our collection we keep in the studio. Whether it’s lighting or creating something, nothing is taken for granted. We often mix colors at the clients' space, as the lighting is important and will have a lot to do with the final look—whether it is a mural we are painting directly on their wall, or a canvas we paint in our studio and have it delivered to be installed. And once there we check the colors, composition in the space and do our final touch up, color washes, etc. We have found that murals are coming back into style, especially when they are done with taste, style and elegance. Faux on the other hand is always the wild card since there are so many different types of faux. Faux can be done to suit the style of the space without looking outdated. Our job is to keep it fresh and topical. We make sure to hold our integrity true and standards consistent. This means honoring our policy of being on time and within budget. We take our time to understand what is the client's vision and making it a reality. Virginia and Jay did a fantastic job of designing, painting, and installing faux tile risers throughout the house. They matched the design of an existing tile in the backsplash in our kitchen, and modified the colors to complement those in the rooms with the steps. They created faux tile stencils in multiple sizes to adapt to the different riser heights. Jay came up with a creative solution to hiding the existing irregularities in our 80-year-old steps. He even aged the faux grout between the tiles to make the entire set of faux tiles pop, and look even more realistic. Somehow they managed to transform our rooms while creating the impression that our new "tiles" had always been there! The original work was done in 1929, with one quarter of the original fresco being destroyed due to water damage. To us it was doubtful if the restored part would blend with the old, but the team painstakingly pulled it off, laying down on scaffolding and standing on ladders for hours. It was amazing to watch. In our breakfast nook off the kitchen they painted an octagonally recessed ceiling in a blue sky theme with lemons on a branch, it made our breakfast room come to life and is very unique. In addition a mural in the same area was painted and has become very personal to us as it was the location of our Wedding in Lake Como, Italy. Over the stove top exhaust shroud they embossed grapes and leaves to enhance the existing Italian vineyard theme. The finishing inside touches were faux walls and the exterior arch ways of the house were outlined to complete the beautiful restoration. Their commitment to understanding our vision and creating the interior period look for a late 1920's California Spanish Colonial was outstanding. Never in a hurry until we were comfortable with the concept, as well as color and tone, they consistently delivered an outstanding end product. Help** *(in Design Dilemma)* I want to change the look and feel of this fireplace. I'm not necessarily opposed to the rock but the shape is strange and it feels like it's just an after thought in the room not a focal point. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Photo in the comment below. The paint color and furniture are changing also. A: Unless you want to change the the shape of the fireplace which can be done and the stone completely covered up. You could simply get a contractor to frame it in. If you are OK with the stone but not the color - I would look at blending the color with the color of paint you use on the walls. The stone can be fauxed with a color wash and then sealed. If done right it would still look like stone. **Q: Awkward “sidewalk” issue** *(in Landscape Design)* We have a problem area at the front of our house. See first photo, area outlined in red. Originally two large stone pavers at edge of porch steps, but they are crumbling and need to be replaced. They’re also too small - whole area in red gets shoveled in the winter (and we live in Syracuse, so lots of snow to move), and then the grass gets trampled in the summer and looks muddy. Second shot is the house with area in front. Any suggestions on how to hardscape this area? I’d like to stick with something contemporary. I originally thought about long narrow cement pavers (a quick drawing in photo three), but not sure what to put BETWEEN pavers for it to be practical - not sure grass would work, and I feel like pea gravel world be bad for shoveling and snow blowing. Thought maybe we could just extend blacktop to area in red (photo one), but I think it’d be difficult to get someone to do such a small area and wondering what kind of seam/transition I’d see. Any suggestions or advice? A: I agree with mad as black top would look cheap and also will have a tendency to split depending on weather in your area. However cement can be cleaned and even tinted if you want a different color. **Q: back staircase to second floor--keep it or let it go?** *(in Polls)* I have a 100-yr-old house (three-story) with a back staircase to the second floor landing. My house has lots of lovely period architectural details and I think this is one of them. However, we don't use it for going up/downstairs--it ends up being overflow storage, recycling, etc. and I'm wondering if we should remove it and recover the space into the kitchen and potentially a closet upstairs. So what do you think? Is a second staircase one of the little quirks that makes you fall in love with an old house? Post (round) supporting my open living rm. and want to make them look like marble with paint. How do I start? A: We do this professionally and suggest that yelp has some videos that will be helpful to learn how to do this. **Q: Metallic faux painting on fireplace, golden oak, popcorn ceiling** *(in Design Dilemma)* A: If the FP is manufactured it could be difficult to take of the metallic. It is hare to take off metallic paint as it dry8s very hard. How ever if you wanted to change the color you could put a wash on it, but have to be a little careful as it could look painted if not done correctly. You can test an area - using glaze, and if you do not like the look it will come off by wiping. Hope this helps. Also like the suggestion painting the cabinets the same color as the wall. It will make your room feel bigger. **Q: Great functionality.
