**Q: Granite countertops installed with too much overhang** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I had a granite countertop installed in my bathroom on Saturday and it doesn't look right. The overhang in front of the cabinet is 2.25" in front from the cabinet doors/drawers and 2.75" on the end. After looking online and at my sisters countertop who has the exact same cabinet, it should only be .5" - 1" max past the doors. It looks HUGE on my cabinets. Aside from that, it overhangs into the door opening by at least 1.5" and the sinks are all the way to the front of the cabinet. So much that they cut the front of my cabinet and my wall at the back of the cabinet so they could get the sinks in the cabinet opening.
When I picked out my slab and asked to schedule a measurement, the salesman said that since the slab was 98" and my cabinets were 95", they didn't need to schedule a separate measure because they could measure and cut it onsite. My invoice says the slab is 98 x 23. My cabinets are 95 x 21.75. I could have lived with the 23", but the slab apparently was actually 24.5 and they obviously didn't cut it to fit.
On top of all of this, the installers were 3 hours late and the salesman had no clue where they were. I had to call multiple times to find out when they were going to be there and they kept telling me they were trying to get ahold of them and that I was the only scheduled install, so they couldn't figure out why they were so late. Once they showed up, they were there for 4 hours outside cutting. Since they didn't cut the slab down, they must have only been cutting the sink holes out.
This doesn't seem acceptable, does it?

A: I'm really late to this discussion but 1 1/2" is what is used if you have overlay doors. your doors are flush and that is why the overhang is too much. With an overlay door that is 3/4" thick, it would leave you with a 3/4" overhang.

**Q: Want to add an island. Do I have to match my granite counters?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I currently have black and some brown granite, I am adding a new island and need ideas for the countertop. The original cabinets will be painted white. The new island cabinets will be an espresso color.  Can I use a light colored granite that contains brown and black or should I use butcher block?

A: You can do a composite that is called drema marfil - it mimics crema marfil which is some of your back splash. I believe it is sold by cesear stone.  It light but is super tough!

**Q: Bowled over by estimates for our kitchen renovation** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Our home was built around 1950 and is a traditional style.  We have lived here just over 16 years, and about 12 years ago, we decided to do a temporary update to the kitchen....we painted the cabinets, added molding, put down new vinyl tile flooring, new countertops, sink, faucet, etc.  The pictures of our present kitchen are deceiving.  It looks cosmetically nice, but our appliances are 17+ yrs. and dying, the floor has seen better days, the cabinets need painting again, two drawers are broken and held together with duct tape and hot glue (amazingly still holding together!), and we lack counter space and cabinet space.  That tile behind the stove in the pictures???.....it's paint, not actual tile...my cheap, quick fix at the time! This kitchen doesn't owe us a thing, and it's time for a complete renovation.  We have what we thought was a pretty generous budget based on the online calculators and articles which say that you should figure 15%-18% of your home value for a kitchen renovation to get the most return on your investment.  We are actually well above that with our budget.

We plan to tear up several layers of flooring, paneling on some walls, move a double window down about three feet and place sink under the windows, open up a pass-through (keep base cabinets and countertop) between the kitchen and family room, new sheetrock, flooring (must replace all the old which runs from front door, through kitchen, to the back door), ceiling, cabinets, add recessed lighting and an island with prep sink and 2-3 seats.  We would like quartz countertops, but are open to other options.  And of course, replace those aging appliances!

The problem we're having is that our estimates are all over the place.  We have three separate designs for our kitchen and have had estimates on cabinets from $11,000 (Debut - plywood sides) to $12,000 (Homecrest - plywood sides and a few extras) to $14,000 (Kraftmaid - promotion applied, plywood sides and a few extras) to $27,000 (Kraftmaid - no promotion because one had just ended, all plywood and pretty much all the extras on our wish list).  Our labor estimates have ranged from $8,700 to $16,000 to $23,000 for pretty much all the same thing.  We live in a rural area and our resources are limited.  We don't have access to tons of local suppliers and design services, but we're still blown away that what we thought was a very nice budget might not begin to cover a kitchen renovation.  We're afraid to go with the cheapest estimates on cabinets and labor and end up regretting it, but we can't afford to do a $50,000 to $60,000 kitchen renovation either.  That would be so completely overblown for the value of our home.  We're finding it very difficult to compare apples to apples since all three designs are different and have a different configuration of cabinets.  Some put a few extras in, some put a lot in. We would appreciate advice.  Are we missing something here?

A: His also has a larger microwave that is deeper and needs the space of a lower cabinet but the one i was suggesting is made by GE and only needs the depth of an upper cabinet.  I would suggest putting your microwave at the bottom of the upper cabinet OR raising the lower cabinet higher than normal counter height. I think his was between 40 & 44". Basically if you bent your elbows at 90 degree, where your arm would lean on the counter. If you could see my hand gestures, this makes perfect sense! lol
In any case, this gives you a counter by the frig, a microwave out of the main traffic flow, and a coffee station. that would be about 1 ft deep and 3 ft wide.

The colors are fun! It has a lot of personality. 

Does it feel too busy? If so, take all of it out except bed & its headboard then bring back items until you feel like it has enough. 
Kinda like jewelry - put as much as you want on then take one off if it feels like too much.

My one other thought, is the bed low to the ground?

Hi everyone. We just moved into our house and the hall is really really bare. I would love some ideas on how to transform it in terms of colours furniture placement pictures anything really. Thanks so much in advance I would love the help

A: Carpet on the stairs will help with sound! But if stairs are good enough, just paint them all white! Add a stencil on the riser - numbers or a saying is always fun...or even add family member names.

Do you like bold colors? If so, the handrail wall could be a green apple. Something that works w the pretty stain glass.

Also upstairs, there looks to be space to make that a built in bookcase. 

As for under the stairs, you can take out studs but you can build deep shelves and give it a stair step look. If you have large gym bags, make some large enough to fit sliding them in. 

Whenever we put in storage like that, we add plugs for iPads and cellphones. Easy way to remember to charge them!

Also, a narrow bench on wall opposite storage will help w putting on shoes.
