Founded by Steve Sherritt in 2003, SD Independent Construction has been one of the premier deck and railing contractors in southern CA. ## Community Q&A

**Q: Do you install with space between the IPE boards?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Just wondering if water can "sit" in between the boards and cause quicker "rotting" of the boards.

A: Gapping the deck boards allows for drainage and also ventilation; the size of the gap we use will depend on the moisture level in the wood and the type of wood.

**Q: Do you only recommend face nailing IPE or fasteners work well w/groove** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: As a company we do not use hidden fasteners to secure Ipe decking. We prefer to face fasten our decks and use Ipe plugs to hide the fasteners.

**Q: Deck skirting** *(in Photo Questions)*

What type of material did you use for the deck skirting?

A: The deck skirting in this photo is 1x6 Ipe hardwood with a penetrating oil finish. There is also a gate built into the skirt for under deck storage.

**Q: What kind of wire are you using?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The wire used on this deck is 1/8" stainless steel cable furnished bySan Diego Cable Railings

A: This was a low profile framing application done with flush mounted posts and beams. We unfortunately do not have a photo of the framing.
