## Community Q&A

**Q: Will time restore weeping branches?** *(in Trees)*

I have a weeping purple beech and a number of weeping cherry trees that have (in my opinion) been over-pruned. The umbrella look if you know what I mean.  Will these branches ever grow back to the ground? It makes ME weep.

**Q: Help with this tree??** *(in Trees)*

We just bought a house built in 1973 - this tree is in the front yard. It is directly next to a huge, beautiful Magnolia. I believe it is a Red Bud of some sort. It is split at the base and has been that way apparently for many many years, and yet grew in spite of the split. I can see that some limbs are dying / are dead and I'm wondering if it has some disease that may spread to my Magnolia? I've taken some pictures. I believe it also may be the victim of carpenter ants.... I'm not quite sure...

A: I concur with that it is just old and no worries for your Magnolia getting infected. Redbuds often decline around that age and get areas of included bark that decay inside and then split later. They're great trees, they just don't last as long as some others. As long as it looks okay and isn't a hazard with potential targets underneath, I would leave it. As far as your Magnolia goes, use premium hardwood mulch at about a 2" depth. We don't use pine straw in the northeast. Be careful using herbicide under trees as you may get some absorption by fine surface roots. just don't over-apply. I would pull, mulch, then then spray whatever comes back through.
