> Karen Hockley designed our kitchen and was there for us from start to finish. She helped us find an outstanding contractor and coordinated the work schedule. She insured that all materials we selected coordinated well and were delivered on time. She followed up with us to make certain that all of our expectations were met. It was a great experience; we love our kitchen and it came in below budget! We couldn't have done it without Karen.

> Karen Hockley from RG Miller designed our new kitchen. She then provided very complete service: helped us pick cabinets, molding, flooring, countertop and backsplash. She listened to our needs and incorporated our ideas into the design. She was detail oriented and also was always looking for ways to help us stay within our budget. She was friendly yet always professional and made sure that all materials we ordered through her were available when needed. I would highly recommend her!

> Karen is an excellent kitchen and bath designer! I have known and worked with her for several years. She has helped me personally learn and grow as a designer. Her ability to view cabinets outside the box and offer creative solutions to design dilemmas sets her apart!

> Excellent prices and help in choosing materials for our custom built home. Know they would be helpful now that we've lived in our home for awhile and would like to further upgrade and customize.

> They put new carpet in our family room. A very very professional person. We were very pleased with the service we received in the store as well the performance of the person who installed the carper.

> Fast, polite, efficient. Helped move things out of the way. Cleaned up after themselves when done. Would definitely hire them again when needed.

> Recently we had carpet installed by Lowes. They did an amazing job, and my wife and I just love the results! Thank you Lowes!

## Community Q&A

**Q: Final layout version of kitchen remodel???** *(in Design Dilemma)*

After looking at a million pictures, getting some input, and considering all (I think) the possible layout options, we have what we think is our final layout version for our kitchen remodel. Below is our current layout and what we're thinking. With that said, I still have some concerns:

The new version eliminates the current family room, incorporating it as our new dining area. We've actually moved the table and chairs into that area now to "mock it up" and try it out for a few days...it's been hard on our white carpet to have toddlers eating in there! So the space works much better and isn't so tight, but we miss having the table in front of the big sliding glass door...lots of light, nice view, and now the table and chairs block/makes less usable the nice new fireplace and built in cabinets I installed last year.
I don't love the range or drop in stove top (whatever we decide) in the island but I don't see another spot for it.
We don't really need a peninsula and an island, and I would prefer to just have an island with bar seating, but we would loose too much cabinet space without the peninsula. We moved the peninsula to the other side of the kitchen so the bar seating could be next to the sliding glass patio door.
The area between the peninsula bar seating and wall, in front of the sliding glass patio door, (6-7') seems wasted, even if we put some cabinets on that wall. Too wide to be empty and not wide enough to really do furniture or much with.
I really like the feel of an L kitchen with island, but with the kitchen in the middle of the back wall of our house, with a 6' sliding glass door on one side of the current kitchen, and an office room with 6' barn doors on the other side, I don't see another configuration that would work. We like an open feel, but also aren't a fan of having guests be able to see our dirty dishes from the living room. So that's how we got where we're at.

Any input on our new layout? We start in soon and want to get it right!

New layout

A: I like the new drawing

**Q: 9 ft ceiling kitchen. Should we do a bulkhead or stacked cabinets?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Building a new home.
9 ft ceiling kitchen.
We wanted to originally do stacked cabinets, however it seems to be about 6 thousand dollars cheaper to just do a bulk head and have standard cupboards.
What are our options?

A: I would do the stacked cabinets now, not the bulkhead. Initial investment may be more but resale should recoup the difference. Stacked Cabinets look beautiful.

**Q: Painted uppers in color other than white?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Looking to redo the kitchen cabinets in two tone with wood base cabinets and painted uppers. I've only seen white painted uppers, but we want to do a color instead. Any suggestions? The doors are shaker style.

A: Look at the Decora Cabinet site and go through their kitchen room photos. Plain and Fancy Cabinet Company might have some photos that would help.

**Q: Prep sink or no prep sink?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm trying to decide if I should eliminate this small prep sink in island. This island will be about 4' x 5’, kitchen roughly 14 x 16.
I originally really wanted it and thought it would be very functional, but now am having second thoughts. (And others aka husband, not liking it.) The kitchen/dining/living is a great room concept, so I wanted the kitchen to feel more low-key, less of an attention draw, and less no-nonsense production oriented. We are empty nesters so don't do that much full-on entertaining, and no grandkids... yet. I know I can survive without it, but am sure it would be useful on occasion too. Thoughts? Good investment? Thanks.

A: Think about how your kitchen and will you use it. I envision from the top view utilitzing the different areas and how I would use them. If you won't use it or it becomes a catch all place then maybe you don't need it. If you have more then one person cooking it can be invaluable to keep your walkway open.

**Q: vent hood insert replacement** *(in Design Dilemma)*

morning houzz!

I can't find a replacement for this odd shaped bad boy. i think the braun pm240 with t shaped mount will work but if there are other options I would like to know.
questions are
1\. are there other vent inserts that I can choose from?
2\. how hard is it to create the vent to the outside?

thanks!

A: Looks as that vent is inside a wood hood?
Broan makes power modules for inside wood hoods, but I haven't seen one like that before. You may have to modify the cabinet to get a new fan to fit into the hood. Best of luck on your project.

**Q: Is Gray the New White in Kitchen cabinets?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm struggling with this.

A: Cabinet companies are still adding more gray colors to their lines of cabinets, and that is a good indicator of a color's popularity.
