## Community Q&A

**Q: Is this the best I can do? Awkward kitchen shape.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi Folks, so i finally have a first set of plans on remodeling a really awkward kitchen. I am kicking myself for buying a house with such and oddly shaped outline for a kitchen. Is this the best we can do for a remodel layout? Here's what I have currently (pic 1) and here's the design proposal we have from a kitchen designer (pic 2 with green)

A: Can you move the kitchen a foot or two into the family room?
I would definitely remove the island from the new kitchen layout, I think it clutters the space and the cook top is too far from the sink.

**Q: Voxtorp Cabinets** *(in Kitchens)*

Please give me any and all feedback. We are going the ikea route. (Photo of my soon-to-be remodeled kitchen.)
My logical brain tells me Voxtorp will hold up to two kids and dogs best and not absorb grease or chip readily.
Looking online, though, it’s hard to find any tried and true reviews!
Who’s got them? Do they hold up?
We currently have painted cabinets and I am absolutely not a fan. They are not holding up and I’m at the age where I am not willing to paint and repaint.
Thanks!

A: Definitely read https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6130083/giving-up-what-are-some-alternatives-to-ikea-kitchens\#26908363 before deciding to go with Ikea. As I state on the above mentioned discussion, you may want to look into some cabinet brands such as CNC, Fabuwood, Forevermark.... for some great solid wood cabinets that are very comparable pricing to Ikea. Research if a company in your area carries these cabinet lines and talk it over with them. It is very beneficial to work with a cabinet company even if just so that you have someone to talk your needs and wants with.

**Q: Giving up: What are some alternatives to IKEA kitchens?** *(in Kitchens)*

I was planning a kitchen with Sektion base cabinets and Mix-it Modern custom doors. But I've spent months trying to order various Sektion base cabinet frames (I have two out of 11). I simply don't have the time to search for stock every single day for various items, and it doesn't appear that IKEA's supply chain issues will be solved any time soon.

Anyone have recommendations for or experience with any RTA cabinets? We're looking for a modern frameless style, and several of the RTA vendors out there only have traditional styles.

A: darbuka, I get no commission on suggesting Fabuwood or the likes:) I personally have had these brands installed in many homes and clients have been very happy with them. I even had someone tell me they prefer their Fabuwood cabinets to the new custom cabinetry they replaced their kitchen with. I personally installed CNC cabinetry in my condo and I am extremely happy with them. I am sorry for the apparent bad experience you had with these lines.

**Q: kitchen shelves** *(in Kitchens)*

Should I put corner/angular shelves or straight shelves?
I wanted clean lines and no uppers but I am being told I should put some shelves on the right side if the hood.
Shoudl I put one from the same level of the hood to the wall? Should I put two? Straight or in an angle?
Will corner shelves help to disguised the fact that the windows are not center?
Thank you!

A: I would go with L shaped shelves as the window is not centered on the wall. This way the bottom of the "L" that will run a little on the window wall but mostly on the fridge wall will balance out the window.

**Q: Kitchen island in a small kitchen-help!** *(in Kitchens)*

We are purchasing a home with a nice but smallish kitchen. Rather than have a kitchen table, I'd rather add an island since there isn't a ton of cabinet space.
The kitchen measures 115 inches from the cabinets to the wall, and 125 inches from the cabinets to the window. I'd like to add an island with two seats (there's only three of us in the house, and we do have a dining room). Do you think this is enough room for a island? Most things I read say you should have 48 in on all sides of an island. I'd want the seating to be on the wall side facing the cabinets. What do you think? What island dimensions would you recommend? Thanks!

A: the minimum an island should have is 36" and even that is a bit tight.
What are you trying to get out of the island you want to install? Do you want the island for seating, for counter space, or for more cabinet space?

**Q: What do you think of this layout?** *(in Kitchens)*

So excited to finally be renovating our kitchen. I have the drawings from the cabinet store and wondered if anybody had any suggestions. I don't think I can ask for the cabinet measurements until I put down a deposit? I am going to do glass doors in the bar area instead of open shelving. I'm not sure of the corner angled cabinet? The table area looks tighter than it actually is. Those measurements don't appear to be correct. Thank you!

A: Hello All,

I have no problem with the layout, I think the cabinet company did a great job considering your needs and wants. The island is a bit bulky for the kitchen but this is your kitchen, you will live in it and have to love it so if you want a big island, go for it! I am not in love with angled corner cabinet but it is not worth to throw off your symmetry. You can ask the cabinet line if they have a 90degree corner cabinet. Another suggestion is to remove all wall cabinets on the sink wall and just end the cabinets in a straight run on the range wall. Then, you can do nice open shelving to the left of the window that is over the sink. This would open up your kitchen a lot and bring the airy out-door feel from the glass atrium farther into your kitchen. Good luck!
