The contractors that I hired to do the job had never worked with black locust before. Most of the decks they have done were Trex. I had done a lot of research on Decking materials as I was fed up with constantly having to redo my cedar deck. I landed upon Robi Decking and it was the find of the century! Everything about Robi Decking is first class. From the service to the materials to the ease of delivery to communication to even addressing issues with some lumber that needed to be replaced, there was simply no problems ever and the wood is fabulous! I would not hesitate to use them for a second for my next job that requires this type of materials! Decided to replace existing 4" x 12" rough cedar stair treads with (3) 4" x 4" black locust. Ordered S4S (rather than rough sawn) at the advice of the salesman I spoke with, but received lumber that appears to have been used to sample various stains at previous points in their life cycle. As such, I had additional time milling the lumber to get to a usable condition. Once milled, I was very pleased with the final product. Client was also happy with the final product, and that's really all that matters. > > Hindsight being 20/20, I would have been better off purchasing the rough sawn lumber and milling to the final dimensions that I really needed for the project rather than assuming the S4S product would arrive "ready to use". However, Black Locust is not the easiest material to work with because if its hardness and strength. It proved to be much more difficult than the 5/4 x 4 cedar decking that I used on another project. If you are a DYI person like me, you will need to take car with the alignment of the boards and be prepared to exert some force to bend them into the proper orientation. > > I chose to hide the screws that fasten the boards to the underlying joists, and it took me a little while to learn how to adjust the installation to accommodate the hardness of the material. Pilot holes needed to be drilled deeper especially for the double angled screws at the ends of the boards. > > I got good informational support from Robi Decking prior to making my purchase. In the end I decided to buy more material than the website calculator advised. This proved to be a good choice, as it allowed me to be more selective about which boards to use where.
