What I Do & Why I Do It:

In one sentence... I build spaces that connect humans to themselves, to others and to this beautiful planet.

In many sentences... I design and build spaces, outdoor living areas and features with the aim to create some sense of awe. I think beauty is the catalyst for this and beauty is achieved through thoughtful forms, best materials and a level of craftsmanship that is no friend to compromise.

The spaces and structures we humans live within must evoke awe in each of us if we desire to have the best possible living experiences. Through purposeful design and the use of the best materials available, a thoughtful person can achieve this.

I attempt to create connection, awe and beauty in the modern world through the construction of things using natural stone (the world's oldest building material) and the "dry stone" method (the world's oldest building technique). "Dry stone" is the construction of a structure or feature using only natural stone and nothing more.

A true drystone mason must follow the old, sacred rules, which requires extreme discipline and perseverance. Yet, the strict adherence to them allows for the building of a stone feature that can last for thousands of years. Therein lies the reward for his or her effort.

I, however, call myself a "stonesmith" because i want to move the conversation about this somewhat obscure trade away from the strictures of the traditional nouns used and towards a discussion about what's now possible in the 21st century by combining this ancient craft with modern machinery and technologies.

The noun "smith" blends it's original meaning ("a skilled worker") with both a later definition ("one who smites metal") and it's modern usage ("putting the pieces of something together").

\- Jon Aguilar (Master Stonesmith & Artist).

### Typical Job Cost

$45,000 - 225,000

Stone material costs are based on how much fabrication (cutting, shaping and texturing) is involved. Labor costs for the this ancient dry stone building method are very high. An example of an $45k project = custom fire pit + patio. An example of a $4M project = a luxury landscape & art installation that involves a team of artisans and craftsmen and a multi-year timeline. What I build will be stunning and last for hundreds of years.

**★★★★★ — Andy Patterson, April 2019**

> Jon brandishes his brains, guts, and vision to great effect. Expect his stonework and landscapes to communicate and inspire. He has unique intimacy with primitive stonework methodologies and the language of stone, but he won't hesitate to employ modern techniques to get the job done. His energy and enthusiasm seem boundless.

**★★★★★ — Arthur Crowe, Feb. 2019**

> Jon took an absolutely bland and completely useless compact yard space and turned it into an outdoor extension of the home. Water, fire, and relaxing privacy is what we have and use in all four seasons in Seattle

**★★★★★ — David Mallin, Nov. 2018**

> Jon Aguilar is a master of stone, and design work. His projects are outstanding and will stand the tests of time, beyond our lifetimes! The project he headed up for my family is a beautiful memorial structure, dry stacked sandstone, in a public park in Durango Colorado.

**★★★★ — Jodi, Nov. 2018**

> Jon and his team are exceptional stone craftsman; one of a kind for design and skill! They built a moon gate made from stone and fire pit.
> It helped sell our home quickly.

 - Description: To-date this was the most complex dry stone project that I have built. I designed this feature with what I describe as "circular" or "geometric" aspects. The intention was to create a magical and stunning feature around a fire that connects everyone in one beautiful space. Over 17 different persons were involved in this collaboration from the plumber to the woodworker. The total man-hours exceeded 2,200 by my count. Over 1,200 stones were individually cut, shaped and tooled. (We spent around $3,…

 - Description: This massive, multi-million dollar project in Truckee, California began in April of 2106 when I invited a group of fellow craftsmen and designers to walk through the site to see what ideas they could collectively form for the client from a "blank slate". A theme was then proposed; a rough plan was approved; and phase one site preparation began that same Fall. It's a one-of-a-kind collaboration involving my stonesmith team and other craftsmen from Colorado, California, Washington and Italy. Phase…

 - Description: To watch a video of the building process use this link = https://youtu.be/NO4XB3WNMyQ I built this Om Lounge at the home we rented in Tucson, Arizona from 2018-2021 before we moved to Texas. The beautiful African Sumac tree with a 45’ wide canopy really inspired both the shape and the idea. I wanted a space for my large family and myself to just “lounge” around in. Since it was a rental home I didn’t want to spend any money. So I challenged myself to build this feature without paying for materia…

 - Description: My work and this project represent the essence of this possibility: The combination of the dry stone method and art with stone being the obvious medium of choice. I was called by the artist in January 2016 asking me to build this after he found my business card on a coffee house in 2015. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This conceptual "Anasazi" or "Puebloan" Kiva was designed by artist-sculptor David Mallin from Mancos, Colorado.
