Sarah Tombaugh Architecture + Design is a full-service firm with experience in high-end residential and small commercial work primarily in Manhattan. While our design approach and space planning is modernist, we collaboratively and symbiotically weave in the personality of the client and the context of the site.

Our work is an armature for living as envisioned through beautiful usefulness. Engaging spaces and environments that are informed by and enhance the intended activity as developed through a sensitive choreography of materials, textures, contrasts, lighting and of course the space itself.

We rely on long standing relationships with contractors, consultants, and vendors to provide the highest level of service and execution possible. We fundamentally believe the "sum is greater than the parts." Our work is referral based and many projects are repeat clients.

> I hired Sarah Tombaugh Architects to design the plans for the renovation of a one bedroom apartment in Manhattan. In addition to design, Sarah was an integral and essential part of getting the plans and work approved by my building's management and their outside consultants. Sarah and her team were creative, insightful, responsive and professional in every interaction. I could not have gotten the job approved without her and highly recommend her to anyone who needs an architect.

- [West 91st Street Apartment](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/west-91st-street-apartment-pj-vj~3563594)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: Existing pre-war elements such as mahogany doors, lovingly patinaed crystal door knobs, and original herringbone parquet floors were protected through this thoughtful renovation. In contrast the bathroom was completely modernized and stripped of all extraneous detail to present a minimal glowing white box enhanced by polished Thassos marble walls and floors, and Lapis blue Murano glass tapware. The modern kitchen was sensitively designed and orchestrated to synthesize into the apartment as a who…
- [West End Avenue Brownstone Apartment](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/west-end-avenue-brownstone-apartment-pj-vj~101998)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: A 500 square feet apartment in a historic upper west side brownstone was masterfully reworked to feel much more expansive. Doors were enlarged to enhance the ceiling height and a leaded glass transom was installed above the bedroom door to allow light to stream between rooms. Designed to provide a respite from the bustle of the city below, it is articulated through the soothing pale blue and off-white palette. The original plasterwork, moldings, floor, and fireplace were restored to contrast the…
- [West 15th Street Loft](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/west-15th-street-loft-pj-vj~2676453)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: Quintessential loft living: open space, soaring twelve-foot ceilings and expansive windows overlooking downtown Manhattan. We started by stripping the entire space to a blank slate. A generous living room was defined, a cook’s kitchen including a fifteen-foot island was integrated, and a second full bathroom was carved into the space to provide comfort and luxury. Clean lines and a fresh palette deliver a peaceful home for all who enter.
- [Uptown Townhouse Renovation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/uptown-townhouse-renovation-pj-vj~2705300)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: All original detailing had previously been removed which allowed us to define a new personality. Minimalist detailing and a subdued color palette was used in tandem with sensuous wide plank Hickory floors, natural cleft black slate in the Master Bathroom, and gorgeously veined Lilac marble for the Kitchen backsplash. The overall effect is a thoroughly modern rendition of gracious urban living.
- [The Mirabeau](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-mirabeau-pj-vj~1862417)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: This project and client presented one of the more unique situations we have encountered as she had lived there for nearly 30 years. We were tasked with reimagining and reinvigorating the spaces for her next chapter there. We successfully collaborated as a result of our client’s trust in our ability and her own refined creative sense and art collection. The home is sensitive tension between old and new; imperfection balanced with beauty.
- [Upper West Side Brownstone](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/upper-west-side-brownstone-pj-vj~472083)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: Three floors of a historic townhouse were renovated, undoing decades of work to focus on light, extended vistas, and openness. The kitchen expanded to include custom fabricated double acting steel doors to the garden, an island that anchors the room, and a joyful breakfast room. Structural glass was used to cover an existing basement light-well cleverly creating a design feature. During the day the light more efficiently penetrates a formerly dark cellar and at night the structural glass is lit…
- [Riverside Drive Prewar](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/riverside-drive-prewar-pj-vj~101982)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: This prewar apartment building provides stunning views of the Hudson River. Having last been renovated in the 1970’s, this gut renovation provides large living spaces for a young family who loves to entertain. Subtle reworking of an already gracious floor plan enhanced functionality while respecting private areas and maximizing public areas. A chef’s kitchen with custom millwork and rich stone countertops opens directly onto a loft-like dining and living room. An intelligent use of the former ma…
- [Upper West Side Prewar](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/upper-west-side-prewar-pj-vj~602088)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 3
  - Description: This prewar apartment renovation focused on a kitchen renovation and expansion, the addition of a playful powder room, and the renovation of a sleek master bathroom. The formerly closed off kitchen now opens directly to the dining and living room underscoring the client’s love to entertain. A tailored and bright aesthetic provides a smart and urban home.
- [Lincoln Center Pied-a-terre](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/lincoln-center-pied-a-terre-pj-vj~1202201)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 22
  - Description: A generic 1960’s vintage apartment was transformed into an airy jewel box with expansive views of Central Park and the city beyond. The brief from the client included maximizing light, creating a double vanity in the master bath, and keeping the palette soft and soothing. The success of this project was a consistent vision and seamless aesthetic communication with the client even though her first language is not English. A true testament to client satisfaction, this pied-a-terre is one of her tw…
- [CPW Prewar](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/cpw-prewar-pj-vj~688681)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: This pre-war apartment is located in the Emory Roth designed Ardsley. Its outdated interior was in desperate need of an update. The renovation thoughtfully pays homage to the historic Art Deco details of the building by utilizing a special ceiling molding detail in the living and dining room, highlights the original leaded glass windows, and incorporates artfully selected period piece light fixtures. The custom designed kitchen millwork and the sensitive reworking of the floor plan provides a mo…
- [The Saxony](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-saxony-pj-vj~3028882)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: This was a gut renovation of a 2300 square foot pre-war apartment located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The apartment is located in a architecturally significant building designed by the famed architect Emory Roth. The desire of our team was to create 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms out of a sadly chopped up apartment while maintaining gracious and open living spaces. We added central Air Conditioning and reworked the floor and ceiling structure to provide added stability and sound insulation.
- [West 90s Renovation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/west-90s-renovation-pj-vj~2644510)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: Gut Renovated pre-war apartment. The goal was to open up the kitchen to the living space to allow for the most flexible entertaining and enjoyment of a compact NYC apartment. Many pre-war details were retained while pairing with modern custom millwork, wideplank oak floors, and translucent glass doors.
