> There are many important choices when starting a renovation. Not one of them is more important than hiring the right architect. This one single decision probably has more weight that all others combined. Naturally, I was very concerned of finding the right person for a relatively difficult job.
>     I decided to go with Steve, and that was the my best decision yet.  Fist of all, he is great person. He did not rush or push for decision when we were completely confused. He guided us and helped choose what is right for our needs. We always had radical different choices or if we liked something in general he would still show a couple of subtle changes to improve the outcome.
>    Second of all, Steve is a natural talent. Experience is a great asset but natural talent should always be at the base. His vision and understanding is extraordinary. If we were considering an idea there was no problem for him to get the pen and paper and sketch it for us.

> Steve@Axios took on our big project despite its inherent complexity.  Our custom 1960's contemporary home needed a fresh perspective in figuring out how to make it meet our expanding needs as a family.  From the early idea stages through to completion, Axios helped develop a creative solution that ultimately gave us ~1,300 new square feet of space that included a new, larger kitchen, a new master suite and laundry, and a new room for our daughter.  All of these spaces have fantastic windows that provide a lot of light and the natural woods chosen for the interior really connect the new space to the outdoors as well as to the existing structure.  We love the details that Axios used to make the spaces extra special such as a plank nickel gap wall, a new laundry area with barn door that is both functional and beautiful, and many unique architectural details and materials.  Without exaggeration, before-after reactions from those familiar with our home are consistently jaw-dropping.  Our home feels like a vacation place in the heart of Atlanta!

Steve has designed a custom mahogany kitchen table and a large cabinet fireplace surround for us but what blows people away is his design for our gut renovation that included a full kitchen, living room, massive deck, lower patio area, laundry room, drop zone, master bedroom, and master bath suite.  Steve is a fantastic architect and a pleasure to work with.

While serving as  Chairman of the Board of Trustees, I interviewed Steve and other architects for  consideration. Steve and I toured the building and discussed possibilities to accomplish the stated goals of consolidating scattered staff offices into a single portion of the building, creating a hospitable weekday building entrance,  improved access for the handicapped and  updating a 1960 fellowship hall.  Steve recognized that more than architecture would be involved. He suggested that  he first, interview all staff members to clearly understand each person's  needs and expectations and with that he would develop several alternative conceptual plans for us to review.. We took Steve up on that proposal.
>  We ended up using Steve as the project architect. He worked with a fantastic general contractor (Emery and Associates)  to accomplish a very difficult assignment. We are pleased with the results.

## Community Q&A

**Q: What materials did you use on the exterior walls?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I am working on a modern minimalist design and I'm researching exterior wall materials that match my clients wishes.

A: I have not used Resysta since this house was constructed about 5-6 years ago.  No Resysta problems, I just haven't used it.  When this house was built, the GC purchased material directly from Resysta.  I don't think they had a strong SE distribution system at that time.  All of this might have changed by now, but I have no direct contact info different from what you have found on the web.  Thanks for your interest and good luck!

**Q: What is the flooring in this kitchen?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: It is a commercial vinyl product that comes in rolls about 6' wide.  It was installed over 15 years ago, so I no longer have the specific product or manufacturer.  You will find that commercial products are typically better than residential re: a more modern aesthetic.  This is still in service and looks as good as the day it was installed!

**Q: Love the Windows** *(in Photo Questions)*

Love the windows in all your projects, Sagamore House, Piedmont Perch, Fernleaf, Ravine Ranch...

Where would we find similar windows and are there certain brands you recommend?  Thank you

A: The three projects you mentioned used Andersen, Pella and (I believe) Lincoln.  Are are good choices, especially if you are not looking for super custom features (i.e. not all manufacturers make corner windows).  All three of those projects required a lot of contractor/architect coordination to make sure they came out right.  It makes a big difference to achieving the outcome you are enjoying. **Q: frameless shower glass** *(in Photo Questions)*

Who did you use for the frameless shower glass?
Did you use silicon or a recessed U-channel to secure the glass to the floor and to the wall? Which hardware did you use for the door?
Thank you.

A: The final glass contractor and hardware selections were by the general contractor.  CR Laurence and many others are good sources for glass shower hardware.  The glass is "attached" with silicone.  There is no special channel.  This has become quite common in our area.  Many thanks.

A: This project has been completed long enough that I no longer have record of the specific colors.  I'm sorry I don't have this for you.

**Q: Screen** *(in Photo Questions)*

Which screen did you use? How large is it?
Thank you!

A: The screening is conventional screening material carefully stapled/fastened to the support framing.  In the photograph, the support framing is white.  The small black columns you see do not actually touch the screening.  One more point.  The contractor found great benefit in prepainting all of the white members before installation and then touching up afterwards.  The biggest screen panel is 11-6 x 4-6.
