**Q: Accent Fabrics** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have had a set of chairs covered in a great Ikat woven fabric in neutrals and need to come up with accent fabrics for pillows on the sofa. Sofa fabric is more of a straw beige than brown. I am trying to keep things monochromatic with maybe a bit of colour, I am drawn to either turquoise or maroon. Any suggestions? 

Also, would a sisal carpet be too much neutral on covering a heart pine floor.

A: I like what you have done so far.  Navy blue is a hot color this year, and actually has been a favorite of mine forever.  I can't tell what color your fabric is above this, but if may be close to navy.  Before buying a sisal rug, make sure it is cleanable, especially from mustard and red wine.  I would probably do a rug with navy, beige, and tan in a large graphic design.  The sisal may also be too flat.

**Q: Storybook Ranch needs facelift and curb appeal** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Our first house together!  And I'm stuck dealing with recovering from 2 surgeries and in the midst of chemotherapy, so all I can do is dream and plan.  I love the 60s storybook ranch style of our house, but not the white plastic siding.  Other homes in the neighborhood have brick accents - I think ours may have been partially covered or removed.  I think a larger porch area would be nice, but I want it to look like it was original to the house.  I want to get rid of (at least most of) the lawn and have a wide, welcoming approach to the front door.  We are in Southern California, zone 9b, severe drought. And most of it will have to be DIY because of our low budget.  Okay Houzzers, do your stuff! (Please!)

A: I know you said you were on a budget, but what if you added a garage in front of the room that was a garage?  That would make the other area kind of a courtyard.  You could put brick on the floor of that courtyard with a brick edge, then carry the brick to the other side. Maybe a pergola?   Maybe double front doors?  The path leading up to the front door could also have a brick edging with some interesting small flowering trees .  It could be very pretty and inviting and cottage-y.

**Q: Carpet color to make paint look less blue** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I just had my house painted "essential grey" which looks more blue than I had hoped.  I'm changing carpet and wondered what color would take away blue tinge and bring out grey from paint color?

A: My son just did the same thing, and since he didn't like it, he repainted instead of trying to get anything to match.  I myself like your color and would emphasize the color by putting in a carpet that has some of that identical color and maybe a tiny bit of black and some dove grey/  Kind of a tweed look.

**Q: Need LOTS of family room help please!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am completely stuck in my family room...although I know I need to add quite a bit to the room, at this point I am focusing on 2 things. 
First, the mantel and nook above the fireplace. It is large (7 feet tall, 4.5 feet wide). I have no idea how to fill this space. I want to add some color to the room-- maybe blue or yellow? 

Second, curtains. Should I do one large rod that goes the whole length of the windows? Just do a valance above each one? And if I do long curtains, I need an idea for style. They don't need to be functional, just need to look good. :-)

Any extra advice of what to add would also be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

A: If you were to paint the fireplace wall (just the part that sticks out from the wall behind it) a couple of shades darker than the rest of the walls, you would then create some inexpensive interest.  Almost anything you like would look good on that wall, as long as it doesn't have a white background.  I would figure out the top part before putting anything on the mantle.  You may not need anything.  I'm not sure you need draperies.  I like the big windows with the wood blinds. (are they wood?)  Your architecture is so good that draperies and rods would interfere.  Keep whatever you do inside the windows.

**Q: Which tile to chose? Please help?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

For my master bathroom, I have decided to go with white cabinets and a carrera marble counter top. The question now is the tile. The tile will be used for the dry floor area of the bathroom, the wall base of the tub and the shower walls. Below are some pictures for comparison. I am debating between 4 color tiles. 

1\) The darkest is called "Taupe", its a brownish grey
2\) The second darkest is called "Cactus Brown", looks like its light brown with a hint of grey
3\) The 3rd is called "sand" and its like a beige color
4\) The fourth is the lightest called "alabaster"

I am leaning towards cactus brown or sand but concern is that the marble does not match as well. The darkest "Taupe" seems a little too dark and alabaster seems too light with the white cabinets.

A: Hmmm.....  I really like the counter top.  Does the white tile look good with it, or is a little creamier?  I would fight for a tile that looks good with the counter.  Somehow, your builder should be able to substitute, especially if you find the tile yourself and it's about the same price.  You're going to be looking at this every day, so make sure you love what you select.  Would you do carrera tiles?
