> We have used Cicely Hall's designer services several times, most recently twice in the last two years.  She has great strength in being able to blend old (meaning old, as well as antique) with new...I am speaking specifically of upholstery and changes in color variations, as well as mixing of furniture styles.  After I described window shades I had seen in a museum, she was able to find solar shades which do not detract from the character of our late 19th century Boston town house.  As expected,  we were not in residence when the shades were installed and our confidence was not misplaced; they were installed perfectly.

**Q: how do I update this fireplace/ mantle?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I would like to update this fireplace, remove the mantle.  ideas or suggestions what to do?  Stone?  How high up?  If I keep fireplace, should I paint brass?  Thanks

A: I've seen some beautiful marble used as fireplace surrounds. This looks like a very traditional fireplace; what is the rest of the room like? More pictures would spark a better conversation.

**Q: new house what to do?!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

hellon I am a mid 30s bachelor who just bought a home. I would like to make it look nice and a lot better than my old apt. I have a small living room and not sure what to add or take away to make it look great.

A: I like your idea of red leather swivel stools. If you like red, get a rug with red in it. What's your budget? (Can you afford an oriental rug or save for one you like? Landry & Arcari, Dover Rugs, and many other companies have beautiful rugs and do have sales from time to time) Keep it in mind and approach your room as a picture. Your room doesn't have to be "done" all at once, but goals are good. 

 Is it all one large room with the kitchen at one end and living area at the other? Let the colors work together.

Can you provide the paint color for the walls, and cabinets if they are painted.  I could live with this scheme "forever" LOL !  thanks

A: That job was done several years ago, and I remember that the cabinets were Antique White, but I can't remember the exact shade of green. In the sage family. I'm glad you like it.

**Q: Take out built-in??** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Gorgeous English Tudor home. Take out stereo cabinet & replace with larger built in cabinets? Or just take out cabinet make walk smooth & buy a piece of furniture??? Definitely will fill in pass-through arch opening in wall. What to do? Need something to hold all the wires for surround sound- but don't love the 90's look of built-ins

A: Perhaps the problem you are facing with the built in shelving is the color. You could extend the built in to fill the wall, paint it white (so it blends), and use it to display something interesting. Be careful that it doesn't become a catch-all!

**Q: Sitting area** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Just finished this.  What do I do with the empty space and wall. Only 26" from wall to rug.  Do I just paint the wall same warm green as main wall and do nothing else?  Help
