**Q: what is the fireplace surround material?** *(in Photo Questions)*

**Q: Should I mount a TV over large rock fireplace mantel?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am finishing up a cabin refresh and wasn't going to a TV in the super-tiny living room, but now I want to.  It seems the best place is over the mantel with an articulating arm but are there any other options?  Pictures of all the walls are included.  I don't think we'll ever use the fireplace vents and won't watch TV and use the fireplace at the same time.

A: Hi! You certainly can.  Those vents do make things a little awkward, but I think as long as you get a TV large enough to cover the vents, but not much larger, you'll be fine.

**Q: light fixture help** *(in Lighting)*

I’m looking to update our entryway fixture. It can either match the dining room one or I can also replace both. The dining room has four cans - two on each side of the fixture. Thanks!

A: Either work just great.  If you do go with circular, just don't go too large.  You don't want it to look too big over your table...36" wide is probably the largest I would think.

**Q: How will my composite sink look in 50 yrs???** *(in Remodeling)*

Does anyone have experience with a granite or quartz composite sink for more than 20 yrs?   I love what I see about it, but I'm not planning to remodel my kitchen again (ever!) so I want this sink to last a LOOOONG time.

A: It really depends on the wear and tear but perhaps even more importantly how hard your water is.  Where we are water is very hard and it does build up and become noticeable in the darker versions of these types of sinks.  It also is possible to chip these sinks if you drop something like cast iron in it.  50 years is a lot to ask of a sink!

**Q: Fireplace makeover ideas** *(in Home Decorating)*

My parents would like to makeover their fireplace. They would like to remove the rock and add a fireplace insert. They will also be replacing their carpet and furniture. Would like some ideas to share. Thank you.

A: It would be nice to see the entire wall, but this is what I would do:  get rid of the stone and the hearth.  Drop the new firebox to the floor and to some built ins to either side....maybe get the TV over the fireplace (easier if the box is dropped to the floor).  Something along these lines:


Theirs would be a little different of course since you don't have windows there and it's not certain how far back the firebox could be pushed, but you get the idea.  Nice and bright...same color as the other trim in the going on perhaps.

**Q: Wrong stain colors or what is wrong here?** *(in Flooring)*

Boring kitchen needs some life. What would you do how could this be improved? I am no design expert so I am all ears  and open to all suggestions. Thanks for reading

A: I haven't read all the comments, but my take on the picture you posted is that everything is FLAT.  There is no real texture in there.  You need a backsplash with some personality...nothing monotone!  Something with pattern, maybe some metal in it.  There are so many beautiful options these days, but that will help tremendously.  And maybe some clear glass pendants which always give a space a little sparkle. You could use some sparkle.  :)
