  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: Designing a kitchen remodel in one of the oldest houses in St.Paul meant converting what had been an informal, out of the way space and making it a destination. By engineering away a central bearing wall, the kitchen and sitting area share a light filled, uninterrupted space. With an existing powder room relocated to the former pantry, the space in anchored by a new bay window. Amid trim and built-ins designed to match the period of the house, the regional fir upper cabinets cherished as an anti…
- [Urban Kitchen](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/urban-kitchen-pj-vj~592414)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: The remodeling of this kitchen and breakfast area combines a traditional, utilitarian, furniture-like cabinet style with modern function and materials. These include stainless steel, glass tiles, a plate glass backsplash, a walnut breakfast bar and modern lighting. The open, light filled kitchen and eating area was created by combining compartmentalized spaces through the removal of several existing walls and the addition of new windows.
- [Contextual Addition](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/contextual-addition-pj-vj~585427)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: Adding a second floor onto the existing family room of a classic Kenwood neighborhood craftsman home appears to complete the house form. Inside, the addition houses an expanded master suite including a contemporary bathroom, dressing room and laundry. Teak cabinetry, terrazzo floor tile, glass shower walls and glass wall tiles help create an open and airy bathroom within the context of a formal exterior envelope.
- [Urban Neighborhood Teardown](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/urban-neighborhood-teardown-pj-vj~591084)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: An inappropriately scaled and styled rambler was purchased for teardown at this site. Money was saved by devising a way to use the foundation and first floor plate with a small addition at the back while completely changing the plan to suit the desired center-hall style of the client. Simple cottage/bungalow detailing and materials with muted urban and industrial touches were used to create an expression that fits the historic without being beholden to a particular period. A wraparound brick pli…
- [Modern Concrete Prefab](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/modern-concrete-prefab-pj-vj~584973)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: In this residence for an eye surgeon, International Style Modernism is adapted to express the mechanisms and anatomy of the human eye. The style also accommodates the methodology of the construction techniques and energy saving strategies employed. A four-story oculus centers the plan and brings light to the core of the home. Light regulating devices from movable screens to carefully framed views of the landscape refer light and activities to the ocular core. The home is constructed entirely of…
- [Big Fish Lake Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/big-fish-lake-residence-pj-vj~595637)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: The empty-nester clients for this project sought a timeless and picturesque lake cottage setting. this was accomplished through the use of rustic materials like stone, a hand-split wood shingle roof, french tile, integrally colored plaster walls and decorative ironwork. The scale is kept manageably small by fitting upper rooms into a low roofline and dormers. A comfortable, lofted living area separates the upper guest bedrooms from the master suite.
- [Built Overtime](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/built-overtime-pj-vj~591490)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: This design was conceived of as an assembly of stone buildings that were added to and connected over time. The primary stone structures are linked by lower wood and copper infill sections to create the appearance of being sequenced. The geometric auto and entry court organizes the house against an open field at the front, while the more organic shapes at the lakeside respond to the shoreline and placement of existing trees. The interior retains an almost shaker-like simplicity rendered in beauti…
- [Equestrian Compound](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/equestrian-compound-pj-vj~584205)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 18
  - Description: A California/ mountain home is adapted to suit south Florida in the manner of Bernard Maybeck for this residential equestrian compound. The project includes a main residence, barn, groom's quarters and equipment buildings. the buildings feature natural stone, stucco, and heavy timbers to give the compound a western ambiance without being out of place in Mediterranean dominated Florida. Approaches, views and the relationships between buildings were all carefully considered in the master planning…

  - Description: The remodeling of this Minneapolis Lakes home required saving grand trees and demolishing a previous existing attached garage, kitchen and bedroom addition. We detached the new garage from the house to gain space and utilized the separate buildings to define garden spaces within the yard. The garage and addition create a pair of complementary façades across a tranquil garden space. The new addition includes a kitchen and family room on the main level with laundry and a master bedroom suite on th…

## Community Q&A

**Q: which countertops did you use?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi, I’m trying to figure out if I want white, gray, or black countertops. Are you happy with these? Are they Caesarstone? If so, which color?

A: The countertops are a quartz product, but I am not certain which brand they ended up using. Everyone is happy with the kitchen and the countertops. It is easy to see if they are clean or not!

**Q: What wood are the cabinets made of?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The cabinets are quarter-sawn white oak.

**Q: Granite** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the name of the granite?

A: It is Absolute Black, but I think that is just one supplier's name for it, I'm not sure you would get the same thing from someone else using that color name.

**Q: What is exterior paint color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The stucco is integrally colored, I don't remember the color name, sorry.

**Q: cabinets** *(in Photo Questions)*

are these cabinets custom? what brand?

A: The cabinets are custom made with inset drawers and doors with traditional hinges, by a cabinet shop. So not a national brand that can be purchased. There may be cabinets that are similar, available in standard sizes, but part of what makes this kitchen work is the way the cabinets are custom-fit to this very particular and somewhat quirky space.

**Q: floors** *(in Photo Questions)*

what kind of wood and finish did you use for the floors?

A: The floors are oak to match other existing floors in the house and the finish is a custom stain and polyurethane with a satin finish
