Russell Golde performed two major projects for us in addition to multiple other small carpentry jobs. > The first was a major addition on an existing home built in 1939. We have a beautiful traditional home and were looking for someone who was capable of high quality work. The addition included new kitchen, family room, entry, 3 bathrooms and an additional bedroom. We had an architect draw some standard plans and Russell performed the majority of the work (other than excavation/foundation, plumbing and electrical). He did a beautiful job matching the existing structure so that the addition looks like it was part of the original home. He performed all of the finish work including beautiful built in mantels, book cases, cabinets, moldings, etc. which he not only built but designed. (The plans did not contain the detail for these items and Russell was able to design and integrate them into the plan). Russell does beautiful detailed work. During the construction Russell was very easy to consult with and was able to provide us with trusted advice on all aspects of the project. He was very knowledgeable of all areas of the project, even the parts where he did not perform the work. In instances where the plans drawn by the architect were not feasible Russell was able to modify the plans and provide alternatives to the design. The depth of the panel is 30" and as you can see sticks out past the bottom cabinets. The top cabinets are the standard 24" but are installed flush with the panel. The refrigerator I bought is a Fisher & Paykel counter depth one with a depth of 27 3/4" without the handle. Should I have them adjust that panel to be flush with the bottom cabinets at 24" or leave the 30"depth? Also, was it possible to put the trim on top of the cabinets flush with the doors or does it have to be the way they installed it? A: I try to get clients to not use particleboard cabinets, especially frameless ones. In my experience they damage easily and don't last as long as plywood. In this case a frame would hold the sides straighter and add strength to the entire cabinet. I'm not sure a shim and time will do anything for the cabinet side. **Q: What should you know when you buy an old home?** *(in Design Dilemma)* There are special challenges when buying an older home. If you have taken the plunge, what are some things people should know before they make that 100 year old house their home? Share your experience! (photos encouraged) A: Structural issues are the biggest concern when considering a new old house. On several jobs I've had to replace the first floor framing and the main beam supporting the floors. While the work was going on you could open the outside door to the house and look down at the basement floor. The new floor when finished was flat, solid and squeak free, well worth the effort. Look for a house with higher ceilings, there is little anyone can do to fix the cramped feeling of low ceilings. One could also enclose the old house with a new one like in the picture but I wouldn't want to do that again. **Q: Choosing a builder - when?** *(in Before & After)* I am working with an architect to design a major renovation of a 30 year old house. We don't have a design yet. He suggested, as an alternative to doing a bidding process, that I select a builder and the architect and builder can work together which could result in cost savings, and sent me to one local high end builder that he has worked with in the past. Everyone says this builder is EXPENSIVE. The architect says he is open to working with anyone I choose. Without a bidding process, how can I possibly figure out which builder to work with? I will meet the builders, get references, but how can I compare potential costs without a bidding process? I am confused! A: I agree the builder needs to be part of the design team. Everybody being on the same page can save a lot of "no one told me that moments". Word of mouth is the best way to find a good contractor followed by seeing pictures of their work.
