## About

### Houzz Badges

- 100,000 Ideabook Saves

A passion for detail and a strong respect for the lessons of vernacular architecture are amply evident in the work of this Scottsdale, AZ based architecture and interior design firm. Designing a wide range of custom homes and well-known boutique hotels, golf clubs and spas throughout the West for over 15 years, Oz has established a reputation for creating enduring, soulful buildings ranging from traditional to highly contemporary designs. Known for incorporating antique and reclaimed building materials which help create an intuitive, core level of authenticity in a project, they believe that truly timeless architecture is determined neither by architectural style nor by period, rather it is achieved by creating buildings with integrity which are built to last, or put another way, buildings whose best day isn’t their first day. Equally important is the belief that projects shouldn’t be an expression of an architect’s beliefs, but instead a reflection of the client’s goals and desires.

This focus on design quality is balanced with a strong commitment to achieving a client’s programs, budgets, and schedules. Founder Don Ziebell and principal Gene Kniaz lead a small team of architects and interior designers all passionate about their profession. Believing that good architecture requires more than a good concept, they maintain a strong personal involvement through the entire design, documentation, and construction process, and are adept at leading and uniting a team of design and construction professionals to a common purpose. They are a leader in designing homes that are sustainable and energy efficient, and often look to the past for sensible non-technological solutions, believing that the original “green” buildings were those built centuries ago from local materials and which were inherently attuned to the demands of their respective climates.

> Don designed one of his first houses in Scottsdale for us 15 years ago. Our relationship throughout the 3yr. design/build process was always professional, friendly, and enthusiastic. His understanding and knowledge of Spanish architecture was the guiding force for us in choosing his design firm for our project. He gave us a home that truly defines "understated elegance".

## Community Q&A

**Q: Gorgeous! Where can I find the coffee table?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: It is a custom table we made through our shop- it is bluestone with a custom steel base. If you are interested, please send a note to us at-

**Q: I love this brick paver flooring. I am thinking it might be something other than just brick pavers. Would you please share? Thanks** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love this brick paver flooring. I am thinking it might be something other than just brick pavers. Would you please share? Thanks

A: You are right. They are antique terra cotta pavers. Though antique, they aren't too difficult to find generally. They are set like tile, and come in a range of colors from light buff to deep orange yellow, and in a variety of sizes. Antique Chicago brick can provide a similar look.

**Q: Love the patio window/doors. What kind of material are these window/doors made out off and is it insulating? What is the price range for a door around this size? Thank you** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The windows are painted steel sash. These were made locally in the Phoenix area, but manufacturers such as Hope windows sell them nationally. These use a special steel section to keep the muntin profile narrow. If you are on the west coast, try Janus windows in AZ. These don't have a thermal break, but in Az solar gain is a bigger issue than thermal control, so we use a high efficiency film to control (V-cool) with a high visible light transmission.

**Q: Hi- I love the flooring here. What is the name of the flooring? Thank you!** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi- I love the flooring here. What is the name of the flooring? Thank you!

A: It is an antique French Bourgogne limestone. We imported it directly, but there are a number of dealers in the Los Angeles area that can source it.

**Q: This house reminds me of homes in Luberon in France. What is the color and brand of the shutters paint?** *(in Photo Questions)*

This house reminds me of homes in Luberon in France.
What is the color and brand of the shutters paint?

A: The paint was a color match of a chip from an old shutter in France (and close to the Luberons!) Sorry it isn't much help!

**Q: What kind of flooring is this?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What kind of flooring is this?

A: This floor is antique reclaimed terra cotta tile (also called parefeuilles). It can be found at dealers who specialize in European import of building materials. It was originally used as a ceiling material, spanning between ceiling or roof rafters.

A similar look can be achieved using reclaimed Chicago Brick, or using the right color and type of saltillo tiles installed upside down with a grout wash.
