### Reviews

**★★★★★ — J.P. Szymkowicz, July 2018**

> My wife and I were referred to Allen Built Inc. by a realtor who had several listings of houses that were renovated or built by Allen Built Inc. and we loved the way these houses looked when finished, so when we needed to build a TV room (which included moving a wall, running electric and AV cables and finishing a hard wood floor), we hired Allen Built Inc. Everything about our experience was PERFECT. The owner, John Allen, clearly set forth what his company was going to do and the schedule upon which it would be done. The workers were friendly, competent and showed up to the minute on time every day (and even worked very late when necessary to avoid our house being opened up to the elements overnight). The finished product is absolutely beautiful and exceeded our expectations. I give Allen Built Inc. a 5 STAR rating and highly recommend them for anyone who needs to renovate their house.

**★★★★ — Susan Salek, April 2018**

> The project was a kitchen and lower level remodel which included adding a bathroom. I’m very pleased with the results. The team did a good job with design and execution. We stayed within budget!

**Comment from AllenBuilt, Inc.:**

> Thanks, Susan, for the kind review and sharing photos of your beautiful home. It was a pleasure working with you!

**★★★★★ — ALEXIS DEBERNARDIS, Dec. 2017**

> We are thrilled with the work that AllenBuilt completed for our home. In 2015 we engaged John and his team regarding a large, 3-story addition for our center-stair Colonial. John worked with Jon Hensley Architects to design a plan that fit within our budget and accomplished our objectives. Although the DC permitting process was longer than expected, we moved back into our "new" home within the timeframe to which AllenBuilt committed. We could not have been happier with the guidance and attention we received from our project manager, Damon, from start to finish, and given the working relationship we enjoyed, we think it was not coincidence that John & Annie paired us with him. Yet another thoughtful touch.

**★★★★★ — Frank Roberts, Dec. 2017**

> This was a big additional on a 1937 colonial in Arlington which required that the house be vacated for nine months. John was very professional and knowledgeable from the initial bidding to the substantial completion and punch-list stages and worked well with our architect. His project manager Damon did a great job managing and guiding the project and had very strong knowledge of all aspects of the project including the various trades, finishes, lighting, equipment, etc.... The project qualifies for Arlington Green Home designation and included PV Solar and radiant floor heating which they managed without a hitch. They are highly recommended.

**★★★★★ — Micah Berek, Dec. 2017**

> We were fortunate enough to see an Allenbuilt project two years ago when searching for homes to buy in DC. It was a beautiful home but slightly out of our price range. Needless to say, we didn’t get it, but we were so impressed with the craftsmanship and level of care and detail in the furnishings that we decided to contact them once we acquired our new place to see if they could help us with our remodel. Allenbuilt helped us with an intensive four story renovation including a basement excavation. They were certainly not the cheapest of quotes that we received, but we felt a strong rapport with John Allen and felt that by using his firm we were paying for an added level of service and quality (and a decrease in aggravation and mishaps along the way). It was a financial stretch, but we feel it was well worth it. John is an incredibly clever and resourceful lead contractor — but even more, he surrounds himself with an impressive team of subcontractors, builders and designers that really do justice to the Allenbuilt brand. We have been very happy with our remodel from Allenbuilt. We had very specific requirements and wanted everything done to a very high spec and the Allenbuilt team were receptive to our needs and good at coming up with a plan that adhered to our vision. They quite genuinely wanted to make our dream home come to life and were creative in coming up with ways to make that happen. Another plus is that as unexpected issues arose (which they seem to inevitably do), they were good at proposing multiple solutions for the problem to help us stay on track. Not only that, even despite planning hiccups with our excavation, they completed on schedule which I believe is pretty unheard of in remodels. A lot of that is thanks to the site manager who was nothing short of genius. If you hire them ask for Rigo if you can get him, he’s brilliant.

**★★★★★ — Liz Brock, Nov. 2017**

> We used AllenBuilt for a full gut renovation of an older home. Their attention to detail, professionalism, and expertise was phenomenal and far exceeded our expectations. We are extremely pleased with the finished product and would highly recommend AllenBuilt to anyone looking for a caring and conscientious builder who delivers a timely and beautiful project.

**★★★★★ — Richard Avidon, Nov. 2017**

> This was a large, year-long project from architectural drawings to finish, necessitating that we vacate the premises for 8 months. Three new bathrooms, new kitchen, small addition, redo of stucco on entire house, expanded basement, etc. John and especially his project manager Graham were professional, responsive, understanding, present, friendly and human. They took every care to keep neighbors happy. They made great on-the-run suggestions. Work would be redone at even the slightest request, even if we had simply changed our minds, without complaint. We are very happy we worked with AllenBuilt. Wish I could say something negative so you don't think we are related to them or getting paid for this.

**★★★★★ — Dream Business Coaching, Nov. 2017**

> I work with hundreds of contractors over the past 30 years and John is one of the most organized best contractors that I've ever worked with.I would highly recommend John to anybody that wants a great job on time and on budget.

**★★★★★ — DW Ricks Architects + Associates, PC, Aug. 2016**

> AllenBuilt, Inc. is an excellent choice when considering a General Contractor. As an architect we are always on the look out for good GC prospects. We found AllenBuilt several years ago and have worked with them repeatedly ever since. John and his staff are very professional and organized. Their prices are competitive, they meet progress schedules, and the workmanship is excellent.

**★★★★★ — imschroeder, July 2016**

> In 2015 AllenBuilt did a bathroom renovation that turned out beautifully. They replaced an old bathtub with a tiled walk in shower. The advised on how to add subtle details that really took the project to the next level and made the space very functional - and gorgeous. I would definitely recommend them.

**★★★★★ — Katie Scott, June 2016**

> We engaged John and his team shorty after purchasing the classic fixer-upper: a great house with wonderful bones, but in dire need of a full renovation to bring it up to today's standard for our young family. John's enthusiasm for his craft and commitment to his clients was evident in our first meeting. Throughout the process John and his team members performed reliably, were highly communicative, and gave great attention to the quality of the final product. We put a lot of pressure on John to complete a significant project in a short period of time and with a strict budget, and his team really came through for us. As an architect, I have worked with many contractors over time. I found John to be extremely professional, easy to communicate with, knowledgeable, and committed. We are so pleased with the end result, and highly recommend Allen Built.

> They did not finish the job, left permits open and not closed; did not inform customer on permit status
> Had flooding when the work was partially done due to negligence; clogged basement drain caused basement flooding; had to replace all new installed carpet, cut dry wall and reinstall dry wall and baseboards, plaster and paint again
> Did not own up to the responsibility
> Charges applied to some of the work seem to be repetitive and or excessive and no itemization
> Cancelled meetings when customer had to travel to meet from far (air travel) and the contractor simply did not show!
> Do not recommend
> Have pics and emails to show and verify the above
> They had an opportunity to get more work but blew it
> Surprising they are paying Houzz to advertise here

**Comment from AllenBuilt, Inc.:**

> We appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback although its an unfortunate review considering we felt we mutually reached a resolution four years ago.
>
> As a developer, you contracted AllenBuilt to remove the pool, finish the basement, repair exterior trim, remodel the kitchen and bath, and install an exterior deck. The basement leak you speak of occurred once the project was complete and we were no longer on site. It was very obvious that leaves had clogged the basement areaway drain causing flooding. Clearing drains is basic property maintenance that falls on the property owner. We can understand how this happened considering you live in another part of the country and likely unable to visit the property regularly while you were preparing to sell it. Maintaining the property once the scope of work was complete was never discussed with us.
>
> In regards to the open permit, you instructed us not spend the money to properly permit the project, but we helped you secure the permit when the County required it. You had to sign an affidavit that allowed us to pull permits for you, so you were fully aware of the them. You then put the house on the market as we were completing the work without notifying AllenBuilt, and while a significant outstanding balance remained. Being in the industry, you are aware that selling the home to someone else takes away the primary recourse we have for unpaid debt. This action was intended to not have to settle the final balance owed to us. If the final balance had simply been fulfilled then surely we could have completed our scope of the permitting process.
>
> We take great pride in thoroughly following through in all that we do. Unfortunately, the relationship had degraded to the point that we were no longer had access to the project and therefore could not meet the inspector to complete. In the end, we were able to reach a settlement and you met with the inspector to final the permit.
