They were hanging globes. The hole was cut to fit between the light socket and the little flange that screws up against the socket. The top holes are not necessary for the outdoor lights. In the garden, the top holes just let more radiate through, and they weren't that noticeable. However, if you were just making them for garden posts, you would not need those top holes. I've tried it myself but just wonder how it is that you're able to get such a bright light from your solar light. All the ones I've tried have only 1 led. It just doesn't give enough light to shine threw the lamp shade. I can't find any with 2 or more led's that will fit my lamp.
