A: These maple tops are not stained they are finished with a natural tung oil finish. The tung oil used is Warerlox. Cracks showing!** *(in Design Dilemma)* TLDR; My walnut countertop is cracking after 1 month, trying to figure out who to hold responsible here. A few questions: \- How far from the edge should supports be placed? Island is 6' long, and we have 2 supports that are 24" in from the edge. The overhang is 11.5" deep. \- Even without supports, should a walnut top show cracking after just 1 month of light use? We never placed anything heavy on the overhang. Full Background: I hired a local carpenter to make the countertop, and had my renovation crew install the piece. They met when they picked up the countertop from the carpenter and discussed installation details, but I was not present at the exchange. Now I'm getting different arguments on both sides why my countertop is cracking and frustrated that I'm stuck with cracks in my new countertop which I paid a lot of money for... Carpenter said he did not specify exactly where the supports should be placed, but gave them a rough visual of where they should go. He now says the maximum distance it should be from the edge is 16", but that specific measurement was never discussed with me or the reno crew. He says that as experts, they should know that 24" inches is not sufficient for an overhang support and that he is not responsible for telling them all of those specifics. He said the industry standard is max 16" and any responsible contractor should know that. The reno crew says the carpenter didn't give them exact instructions for installation and that he said the piece should definitely be sturdy as is for now, but suggested to add supports to keep it safe after 3-5 years of use. They said were iffy whether to install supports or not after hearing that from the carpenter but decided to go ahead and install it 24" in (where support would be available from the existing 24" cabinet bases) and said they told him that they would install those metal brackets there. They don't think it should have started cracking already just 1 month in with light usage. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Super frustrated here but trying to keep a fair description of events to get to some resolution so the countertop gets fixed without my having to pay for it all again... Main crack Underside of main crack on the left, another crack on the right Distance of crack from the end of cabinet Note that there's another hairline crack forming on the left, on the other side of the island. (The crack in the center was pre-existing and filled in when delivered.) This crack is NOT on the overhang, so I'm wondering if there are issues with the wood itself? A: @crytalbathurst........Sorry for the slow response and thanks for your comments on our counter tops. I have looked over the many comments to your post and I would have to say that I agree with the majority of opinions that the wood expanding and contracting due to moisture is probably the culprit for the cracks and it has nothing to do with the overhang of the top. The top most likely was not dried out completely prior to glue up and natural drying out process has brought out the cracks. Looking at the board (I.E. the filled portion on the end) I would say that these cracks were naturally occurring and the board should not have been used in the construction of the counter top. These things happen with a wood counter top but the manufacturer should take the top off, cut that board out and replace it with a new board. As far as the finish I can not comment on Emmets, we use only a Waterlox Tung Oil finish and apply 5 coats of the tung oil to both the top and underside of the top...this is important in an area where there is alot of natural humidity because the top will shrink and expand with the different environmental conditions. I also noticed a comment on cost of the top. If you only paid $500 for the cost of this top I would consider that a steal!!! For us to build this counter top we would order at a minimum of $500 worth of lumber to get the right boards (I.E. no knots, no cracks etc). That top in New England would cost nearly $2,000 with our hand rubbed finish. Good luck with your top.....unfortunately the only way to fix this correctly is to remove the top, cut out the bad board and replace it with a new one. **Q: Countertop?** *(in Photo Questions)* What material and color is the countertop?
