I do not know what to do with my living room windows. I get a glare in the afternoon which disturbs using my living room. I have considered film, cellular shades. I am really stumped. Any ideas welcome A: There are varying opacity levels available with films and different patterns, textures, etc. With your current window, all anyone can see is movement. Detail cannot be made out through that type of glass/film. The ability to see movement is affected by the lighting in the room and your distance from the glass. If you don't want anyone to know you are in the shower, you will need a heavier cover to block more light at night. **Q: Window tinting to block interior lighting** *(in Home Decorating)* Can anyone advise me on window tinting? I need to block light from my house in the evening. Is there a way to tint without affect the light when looking out from inside? A: Snowcountry, there are "tinted" films that will reduce the VLT (visible light transmission) just like sunglasses. You can get down to the 5% range, which is excessive for your needs, but something in the 20% range will probably do the trick. The 45% turtle film standard is pretty light. A standard screen on a window is usually around 50%. I would ask the neighborhood for more details on what "too bright" means. You may end up chasing something that will never make them happy. I also recommend working with a window film professional to ensure that your products will be safe for your windows. Many of the darker DIY products absorb a lot of heat into the window, which can cause glass breakage on non-tempered glass. A pro will only recommend products that are safe and covered by a manufacturer's warranty. Happy to help make sure you get the right look! **Q: Window Tint for Summer Sun** *(in Windows)* We live in Souther California and the summer sun can be intense. We have a few very large slider (10' H x 20' L) that we are looking to tint to reduce the amount of light coming into the room and to help with our A/C costs that are now running 24/7. We currently have honeycomb blinds but they are really not helping much. I noticed that mid-day the window glass is very warm and the metal from is too hot to touch. The other idea we are looking at is installing exterior sun blocking shades. Any input would be appreciated. A: @CeeWhy Thank you for such a great question! Window film does not need to be tinted to offer heat control. Our favorite choice for this type of application is the Vista VS70 spectrally selective (fancy tech term for stopping heat energy while letting visible light pass through) film. It allows 70% of the visible light into your home while blocking 55% of the heat and 99.9% of the UV. I could come into your home and install this on a window or two, and you would never notice the difference. It is a bit more expensive than standard "tinted" films, but the technology is significantly better, like a new smartphone. Here are a few pics from real-world projects: VS 70 is installed on one of the windows pictured here. Every window here has VS70 installed. **Q: Does anyone have a solution to heat gain from our west-facing windows?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi! We have a wonderful mid-century modern home in Portland, OR and we love the wall of windows in the livingroom. Unfortunately, the afternoon heat is brutal! We're on Day 7 of the latest heatwave... nothing like last year's 116 degree blast furnace, but it's been in the high 90s-low 100s. The hottest part of the day is also when we get the sun directly into the livingroom. So far, we've replaced the single pane glass with double pane UV-treated and added insulation when we replaced the roof membrane. We also re-did the landscaping last year and added bamboo along the fence, which should eventually grow up to 12-14 feet tall. All of those things help, but there comes a point in the afternoon where there's essentially no way to keep the sun from blazing through the windows. In the bedroom, which has a flat roof, we've installed panel track blinds that do a good job of keeping the room cool, but I'm stumped on finding a window treatment that works with the windows in the vaulted area without compromising the architecture of the house or the indoor/outdoor flow. As you can see in the photo, the glass is really the exterior wall and there's nowhere for drapes or blinds to stack without being pretty obtrusive. Help! A: Eastman Chemical, manufacturer of the Vista and LLumar brands of window film has a Gold Warranty option that will "match the duration, terms, and conditions of an active manufacturer’s glass warranty after window film is installed." Window film gets a bad rap based on no scientific evidence of accelerated seal failure. Don't limit your options. eastman gold warranty **Q: West-facing windows and afternoon heat buildup** *(in Building a Home)* Building in a northern climate, a modern-looking place facing the ski mountain, big tall 18' high wall across whole view side of house all full of windows and sliding glass doors. Windows will be either Pella or Andersen, and both have various glazing options: double pane, triple pane, argon gas, krypton gas, low e, and special coatings to deal with sunlight. We want to minimize the pizza oven feel you can get in summer and early fall afternoons in this big west-facing space with the towering glass. Pella's glass coatings are called SunDefense (for very hot sunny climates) and NaturalSun (for cold climates far northern US). We are far northern US. Andersen offers something they call Smart Sun, which they say shields house from sun's heat and filters out a lot of bad UV rays. Which of these special sun glazings should we be considering for this? A: As noted here, the sun can present two potential problems, excessive heat, and excessive glare. Heat - The best solutions will keep the heat from entering your home at all. External options like trees, roof overhangs, awnings, etc. will outperform on glass (film) or in glass solutions which will outperform interior options like shades, blinds, and screens. A combination of solutions is usually needed to dial in the level of comfort you want. Glare - This is the visible light that we can see. All of the options mentioned above can have an effect on glare to varying degrees. Trees can work well when they have leaves. Blinds work well when they are closed. Most glare-reducing options block your view with the exception of window film. Adding some tint to reduce glare, coupled with other options to block during the 1 hour of peak direct exposure each day can allow for maximum glare control AND give you your view back. There is no one simple solution to controlling the sun. Knowing where the sun affects your home and how you live in the space is important to help a professional recommend the right combo of solutions for you. Knowing this during the planning stage is virtually impossible so don't sweat it.
