The carpet has been ripped out and we'll be installing laminate. The problem is our walls - they are in rough shape and to try to cover it up the previous owners used a suede paint. I really am not looking forward to sanding, patching, etc. the walls. New sheet rock is out of the question according to my husband (been there, done that, no thanks). We really just want to make the room presentable. Our ceilings are low but not terribly low. Basement low. Is covering up the walls with white planks a bad idea? I'd like to go with horizontal planks since vertical planks just remind me of the 60's/70's. But I'm afraid it might make the room look even more squat. One wall will have built-ins under the stairs so there are just three remaining walls. A: I like dclostboy's suggestion. Firstly the room is what it is and no embellishments are going to make it look like its above ground. However it is an AV room and as such it can project warmth and comfort through a selection of warm colors. Either the reclaimed or (weathered new) boards or a hessian wall covering. Make it warm and comfy. **Q: If I paint my kitchen cabinets, will I have to paint other woodwork?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I'd really love to paint my kitchen cabinets cream/white. But I can't afford to change the black appliances or the backsplash and countertops. And if I paint the wood cabinets white, how much of the rest of the woodwork in our open plan house must be painted to look cohesive? Have any of you painted wood cabinets white and regretted it? A: Think about removing the existing poly finish--stripping them. Yes, its a horrid job, but the end result will be worth it. Then after the wood has been brought back use a semi-transparent color stain--off white/gray--watered down latex paint can be used too if you wipe on/wipe off--allowing the wood color to come through. Then a simple 2 coats of semigloss urethane. They will look like new cabinets, not painted over old ones. **Q: please help with my kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)* I want to paint the cabinets, walls , just installed gray countertop with aluminum backsplash, will have all new stainless steel appliances, what color should i do the cabinets, the walls, floor will be changed last. Thanks so much! A: Ok, I thought that there were no doors. Everything I said goes, except painting the silver on the interior. I also thought, originally, that you were using two blues but figured it was just the light throwing me off. In which case--I think that you hare using the right colors, except the wrong way around. change the colors over. Use the dark color on the cabinets and the light color on the walls. it will look good with those stainless (?) tiles. **Q: 1950 house needs help** *(in Design Dilemma)* Any ideas on paint color for outside? The location is west palm beach fl home built 1950. We added the front paved walkway. Thank you A: It's a sweet little house with other stucco houses close by. I'd like to see a Provenance type yellow, maybe a little earthier. This will suggest both earth and sun. Take a look at Benjamin Moore 2018-40 maybe cut with a smidgin of black. Trim could be cornflower blue or a light brown **Q: Master Bedroom Windows/Shades Advice Needed** *(in Design Dilemma)* I am considering closing off the window above the bed in my master bedroom. It is a picture (non functioning) window and the view is to our neighbors house so it needs to be covered with a shade for privacy. Because of it's size (60 inches wide by 22 inches long), I am limited to custom shades only and I am having trouble deciding on a shade based on the little samples they provide. Also, I am planning on putting curtains on the 4 windows on the other side of the room (on the right, left and middle and will keep them open all the time) and I think it may look odd to have curtains on one side of the room but not on this window? I was hoping to avoid having to put curtains on the picture window. I used to have curtains previously and it seemed to close the room in. Does anyone have thoughts or opinions on this? Should I close up the window (and then put some kind of art above the bed)? Or just go with shades and curtains for all windows and leave it as is? A: Its a nice room. But the window above the bed is a distraction from the nice room. It is in the wrong place and it feels wrong. I'd like to see it closed off with drywall painted the wall color, but LEAVING the alcove effect. This would then be a place to put something attractive. If you do this I'd recommend rigid insulation and a decent look from the exterior too. There is no reason to remove the window on the outside, unless you're like me and you just "have to." **Q: Stunning staircase...details, please.** *(in Photo Questions)* A: Thanks for asking, Mary.
