Can I connect 16/2 wire to existing 12** *(in Lighting)* Hi, I have a question about adding in more low voltage landscape wire to light up the other side of the house crossing my garage. My setup is a 300 Watt Transformer, 100' 12/2 wire, 4 LED spot lights(2 are 4.2W, 2 are 18W) and a path light (11W). I plan on slicing in a wire about 30' into my existing 12/2 wire and unit across my garage to the other side of my house to add a path light (11W) and a LED spot light (4.2W). I was wondering if I could use a lower gauge cable like a 16/2 or 14/2. I will need about 75' of wire and don't plan on adding anymore lights then those existing and those which I'm planning on adding. So basically my questions are: Can I splice in 16/2 wiring to add 2 lights to the other side of the house? & What type of connector do I buy to splice in the wire to add more wiring? I don't really want to hard wire it but I will if that's the only method. Any info on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Don't know where you are located but if you are near a large city or in one there should be a Ewing Irrigation Store close. Ewing1.com. They sell 3-M DBRY splice kits meant for higher amps than irrigation connectors. You have less than 50 watts on your 12/2 wire now and you are talking about adding another 15 watts for a total of less than 70 watts... ... ... not an issue what so ever unless you are planning on running those two lights over to your neighbors yard or you live on 10 or more acres and want to put them at the top of your driveway. Is your transformer multi-tap? If so put the 12/2 on the 15 volt tap that way you will have enough oomph to drive the last LED. The industry standard for 12 volt LEDs is an operating range of 9 to 15 volts. Less than 9 volts and the LED will not come on, more than 15 volts and you will burn out the circuit that drives the LED. As always take any advise with a grain of salt and read the instructions that came with the light fixtures and through the salt over your left shoulder. Hope that helps. **Q: Mosquitos and 'no see ums'** *(in Texas Gardening)* Do these yards sprays work? We're having a BBQ on the 30th and don't want our guests miserable outside! I've found a couple products , OFF Bug Control and Cutters. Anyone using either of these sprays? A: All great comments but I would add that you can use any product that contains Pyrethrum or any synthetic version of it. It is usually water based thus leaving no residual after it is dry. It out right kills all bugs including spiders when the spider actually walks through it as they will only absorb it through their feet. This has been used in horse barns, high end, to control black flies. We have installed automated insect control systems in horse barns and when testing the system out the flies were actually dropping like flies!!! **Q: creeping fig in DFW? yes or heck no?** *(in Texas Gardening)* I am debating planting creeping fig on one long wall of my brick house- no windows there, just boring brick. Will I greatly regret it if I do? Anyone in dfw have experience with this? A: Anything on the house or close to the house is a no no. Along with the "pest prevention" services we recommend to all our customers and potential customers 12" to 18" away from the house with any vegetation any closer and you are inviting an infestation. **Q: Do we start building an ark or what?** *(in Texas Gardening)* Mind you I'm NOT complaining, just wondering how many days of rain in succession have we had in San Antonio? I'm guessing at least twenty-one and the weather map shows rain everyday for the next ten days. Will we make forty? I can't remember having such a wet spring ever? Maybe it happened when I was a little kid and would take my goldfish outside to let them swim in clear puddles, but I wasn't counting then. My grandmother taught me a little rhyme. "Rain, rain go away. Sweetpea wants to go out and play" , but it didn't work then and it isn't working now ... LOL I'm thankful that it's mostly been fairly gentle rain. A: I'm just wondering when I can get back to work or even cut my lawn as we are at the end of a cul-de-sac and 10 feet lower so all the water from the 1/8 mile street comes underground and back up just in front of the house and into the backyard and down to the stock tank and into the creek. A: Nope, they look like low voltage, could be line voltage but suspect low. solar is not as luminous **Q: What are you doing to fight back against mosquitoes?** *(in Texas Gardening)* This week's Texas Gardener's Seeds has an article titled Fight Back Against Mosquitoes . Among other things it says: "It doesn't take much standing water to become a mosquito breeding site. 'Some species of mosquitoes can breed in as little as a bottlecap full of water. That's why homeowners need to be vigilant in eliminating places where water can collect and stand in their yards and gardens.' " A couple of years ago I watched a fascinating film on PBS' American Experience about the building of the Panama Canal. If it's a rainy day for you and you enjoy interesting documentaries you can watch it here. In 1906 an astounding eighty fivepercent of canal workers were hospitalized for mosquito carrying diseases so eradicating mosquitoes played THE decisive role in the completion of the Panama Canal. How they did it back in those days still works today. What are you doing to prevent mosquitoes breeding in your yard? A: Start with an LED bulb which will reduce the amount of bugs by the light as bugs are attracted to UV light and LEDs do not but out UV. Then go to Tractor Supply or similar store and in the horse section you will find black fly repellent spray it in the area the next few nights that you see the bugs, over time it will reduce the population in the area. --- *Source: Houzz professional profile.
