**Q: kitchen design help** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hi,

I am painting my cabinets white and ceiling. The backsplash will be a white subway tile with gray grout. 

What color should the little island be ( I was thinking a darker gray?  
Walls agreeable or repose gray?

I also was not sure what color door and drawer pulls. 

I bought the lights below for over kitchen sink area ( I was going to paint them black, but afraid they are to big and to close to the breakfast area.

A: Having a grey/black island with white for the rest of the kitchen works quite well.
I would recommend matching it with your granite/countertop to tie the kitchen together.
Like this example from our site, they went with a black island/white countertop, and vice versa for the rest of the cabinets/granite.
If you're not planning on having a different countertop, then this kitchen is probably closer to what you're imagining. You can match the base cabinets with the island to make the whole room just flow.
Ultimately it's up to you! 
You will be the one who lives there not us.
If possible, I'd recommend painting the light to match the island color, whether it's black or grey. Because it will be a focal point, and if nothing else in the kitchen is black, it might not flow as easily with the rest of the kitchen.

**Q: CALACATTA VICENZA** *(in Kitchens)*

Does anyone have an input about Calacatta Vicenza countertops? I want a very white counter top with very light gray markings. I don't like the veins so I liked how the Calacatta Vicenza had more of dots vs the veins. Does anyone have any pictures they could share or any advice of maybe other brands that are around same price range? I'd really really appreciate it. And does anyone know the best way to clean quartz? Does anyone that chose Calacatta Vicenza have any regrets about it or any negative reviews? Please help! Thank you

A: We have a similar quartz in our showroom, as well as the employee's kitchen. No one has regretted their choice with it and all I hear is how people like it for the same reasons you do. A lot of quartz has long veins or colors that are almost distracting. Here's an example kitchen on our site, different name but practically the same style as Calacatta Vicenza.

As for cleaning the quartz, we use warm water, soap, and just a sponge or rag. 
If anything ends up sticking to the quartz, don't be afraid to be rough with it.
Quartz is very durable and strong. 
The order of durability for countertops would be Marble, Granite, Quartz, Quartzite.

I would just recommend against using the countertop as a cutting board because it will dull the knife and mark the quartz. (You probably already knew this but a lot of people were never told this and make this mistake).

**Q: Painted Cabinets Color and Construction - What to look for? Brand?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I know there are so many options, but I'm so overwhelmed at this point and need a little direction. Our budget for cabinets is about 10-15k. We do not have a large kitchen, it's 8x9 with a 2x3 island and not very many cabinets due to L-shaped layout and appliances. The dining room is also a part of this open area, so the island size is appropriate.

I have a few questions. My husband and I are currently shopping for kitchen cabinets and would like greige (preferred) or white in a mid-grade/range cabinet.

1\. What door construction/material is best for painted cabinets? What should we be looking for?
2\. What brand carries a decent pale/light grey?

I love the color of Waypoint's Harbor (pic attached), but have read that these are entry-level cabinets so am hoping to find a similar color in a better brand. The KD at one of the places we are looking at carries these brand, as well as Diamond and has said that if I find what I am looking for in Waypoint, there is no need to upgrade to Diamond because they are of similar quality. That doesn't make any sense to me, and looks to be false according to other threads on this site. Thoughts?

A: Hello Lauren!
That is a really nice color you picked out!
To maybe help your search, I would maybe not look for greige cabinets if that's the color you're going for.
This color in cabinets would usually be called something along the lines of Pearl, or maybe Ivory.
Greige cabinets are usually more grey, as you can see on our site. Either way, both are very nice and similar. I'd recommend going to a shop with a showroom to see the colors in person and asking for a sample door to bring back with you to see if it fits the space/lighting. (We lend doors for free, but some places may charge around $15 possibly)
If you're planning on spending up to 15k on a kitchen of that size, I'd recommend maybe going for some custom cabinets that are handmade somewhere, because honestly, that's a bit much.
With that budget obviously, you won't buy veneer or mdf cabinets (Veneer is a wood texture piece put over a cheap wooden door and mdf is a cheap wood alternative). Ask the brands which of their cabinets last the longest and are solid wood.
Also, if you choose one manufacturer (or brand) and look at each of their cabinets, most of the time the quality of the wood itself is the same.
What changes with cost is usually color, design (shaker? traditional? etc), glides, thicknesses, and if the center panel is mdf or not.
Just make sure your cabinets have good glides, soft close, adjustable hinges, good construction and the color you like. If you're adamant on spending 10-15k, at that point I would look for custom cabinets, custom paint jobs, etc.
Once you pass a certain point in cost, the majority of cabinets will be made from similar materials, similar construction, etc.

One of the most important things I'd recommend is finding a reliable store with good reviews. Find a shop that will go out of their way to make sure everything goes well. So if on delivery a cabinet gets damaged, or in a few months a hinge breaks, you'd be able to call the shop and they'll take care of it for you. At that cost, any little mishap can cost you a lot depending on who you're working with.

A: Changing the layout/cabinetry!
When changing the cabinets in the kitchen, you usually change around the layout to what is most functional. 
If you plan to put the flooring all the way around the room, then buy the flooring and lay that around everywhere first (once all the old cabinets are removed), if you plan to buy flooring and just floor everything around the cabinets, then you need your new cabinets installed first!

If the layout changes in the kitchen, it's best to have your new layout in place and go from there!
