My house is from the 70s and the windows are 37" x 13". I wonder if I replace my old windows for this ones (without cutting the concrete) they would pass the city of Edmonton regulation for a basement suite? I am just looking for ideas. Thanks! A: HI There, Are you measuring your rough concrete opening? or is this the size of your windows glass etc? There is usually a rough-buck (typically of wood) that can be removed to get a larger concrete to concrete size We can typically meet Canadian egress codes, which are a 15" minimum throat and 3.77sqft as Talathia had mentioned with a rough opening of 39" wide and 17" high with an interior mount basement window. I would love to discuss this further with you. You can take pictures of your windows and send them to me, if you aren't sure what I am talking about when I say rough-buck. Thank you Natalie natalie@replacemywindows.ca **Q: Exterior paint scheme to update 80s contemporary?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi, we just bought a new home that is amazing inside but seems rather dated and disconnected on the outside. The exterior has a HUGE brown roof (which we can't afford to replace right now) mixed with brick, wood siding, and stone details on the portico. I'd love to unify the many materials/textures somehow, and give the house a more contemporary feel. Any suggestions for a paint palette? A: First things first. I love the stone pillars, I would start there and make eveything work with them. The overall colour scheme is too tone on tone with no focus. -Painting the brick a dark tone, It is tough to say, but would a dark blue (SW6237or SW6244) work with the siding, on my monitor it does. This will the pillars pop. -change the pillar lanterns to stainless or black down lights. This will give a more clear idea of where the entrance is and will give a nice architectural design. I would even consider adding 2 up landscape lights with narrow beam spread to the 2 center pillars and the brick flanking the entrance. -Change the lanterns on either side of the door to and up down light, Again will define the space. \- front door, Thermatru Pulse collection. Get these painted in a colour would be awesome. \- The brown roof is intense, but I think that it is just big, in any shingle finish it is just going to be a lot. I do agree with mmllos the brown is not as consistent with making the exterior more contemporary. **Q: Masonite Doors** *(in Design Dilemma)* Can anyone speak about the quality of Masonite doors? A: In our Experience Masonite doors are on the extreme lower end of the fiberglass door spectrum. They have had issues with performance in the past, they say they have addressed these issues, but we cannot in good conscience install them at this time. Overall performance depends on the climate you live in. We are in Northern Canada and have not seen them perform well, they have extreme Thermal bow and warping. They are a very popular door, but this is primarily price point driven. If you are looking at flipping a property without care to longevity and envelope sealing, a Masonite door could be a reasonable investment. A recommendation for a door that will not break the bank would be Fiber Craft door from Therma Tru which is a significantly better made door. **Q: New front door doesnt look right** *(in Design Dilemma)* please help, we just had a dark stained door and sidelights installed on our house and it sticks out like a sore thumb. We are having hardi plank siding installed next week and will be removing the awning. We are thinking maybe a portico would help but not so sure. All advice would be appreciated. A: My guess is you just spent a small fortune on a hand stained front door and side lites. I have two renderings (sorry that they are crude, I am on my lap top and don't have the greatest software. Option \#1: Easy Fix I would paint the shutters and the trim around the upper window the same colour (or colour family as the door. Maybe even update the shutters to a polyurethane product that can be stained to look like wood. Fypon has some wonderful products. The sconces flanking the door should come down instead of going up and be about 1/3 the height of the door, (16" - 20"). They should be a statement, Hinkley lighting has some fantastic pieces that would fit the bill. Option \#2: Game Change In my opinion, colonial homes can shift into and adapt to newer designs. Have you ever considered rock or a polyurethane rock product instead of hardy board? There are some great products from Easy Rock or Dura Rock that give the appearance of stone but are much lighter and easier to install. This could introduce some great texture and depth to the front of the home. You could do this with or without mimicking the roof line on an optional portico. I would pull tones from the shingle colour, the shutter colour, and the door to pick the stone. I would also recommend making the front sconces larger and more of a statement. **Q: What color for the doors?** *(in Design Dilemma)* This is the last phase of the hallway and we can't decide on the door color. The door handles will be simple silver levers. The walls and trim are white, ceiling is black and comes down about 6" onto walls and floor is cherry. We have 4 bedroom doors, a bathroom door and two built ins. The wood isn't in good enough shape to stain, and we are thinking black, white, or grey. Help!! A: I think a Black or very dark grey (Charcoal) would look amazing. It would help anchor the dark ceiling and tie everything together.
