Art Deco inspired bathroom tile conundrum** *(in Design Dilemma)* In desperate need of some tile advice. My husband and I are renovating our primary bath and want to make a dramatic, Art Deco inspired bathroom. We found this gorgeous emerald green tile that we are going to use as wainscoting around the walls, and inside our shower. We are tiling arch entrances to both the water closet and shower, reminiscent of those old art deco bathrooms, and doing a full tile focal wall behind the freestanding tub, all in green. Flooring will be a classic black and white hex pattern. Originally, we were going to go with a 2x8 emerald tile, ordered it, and then learned it’s on back order through the end of April. They have 3x6 tiles in the exact same color available in 10 days. I know it’s more traditional and probably period appropriate, but— Would 3x6 work or look too ‘farmhouse’ compared to 2x8? Again, this isn’t a direct replica, just deco inspired. We would rather not wait 8 weeks to have a bathroom, but also are spending a good portion on the tile and want to make sure it looks nice. It got dumbed down over time. **Q: Bathroom nightmare- is this tile fixable?** *(in Bathrooms)* We hired someone who claimed to have extensive home reno experience and was confident in renoing our bathroom…… one thing after another I noticed was sloppy or incorrect… you kkow when someone paints over lights and lays vinyl flooring with seems aide hy side and some staggered its tome for them to go. I fired him, but I'm left with a mess. moat of it is fixable (like skim coating the walls that henpainted without sanding!)… im worried about the tile in the shower. Ive attached a picture to show the biggest of all the problems. we had one tile setter in yo quote and it was going to be about $5-6000 basically to rip everything out and start over…. plus materials. I’m hoping there is a better answer. in the photo you can see that the tile pulled away from the wall- ideally we can remove some tile and redo the wall without damaging the waterproofing…. if so, what do we do with this wonky bit? any ideas? A: You might not have hired a qualified contractor. There are resources available for consumers on The National Tile Contractors Association website that might prove useful. As a 40+ year professional dedicated to the tile trade, we are always disappointed to see the experiences consumers have with unqualified labor. We had marble tiles installed in a new ensuite 8 weeks ago. They now seem to be cracking a lot and also discoloured in places. The builder has said he sealed them, could they need sealing again or is something else wrong? thanks A: Where did that marble come from? What qualifications did the tile contractor have? And is that grout or silicone at the change of planes? Obviously can't see how it was set. It can be a combination of poor materials and improper prep. Not there and don't have access to the methods used. I have 3x6” zellige tile… and wondering how this grout might perform in uneven artisan grout lines? Maybe 1/16” or close to it. We used Spectralock 1 in another house and loved it. But… it was in a shower with 4x4 ft tiles with clean lines, not small tiles with uneven lines, so I can’t really compare the two. A: Spec 1 is a good choice for that application. **Q: poor tile work in bathroom, what to do at this point.** *(in Bathrooms)* I had the bathtub set, duraguard and red guard applied, everything looked great until the contractor started applying the 12X12 tiles, take a look at the progression. I am really concerned about the gap between the wall and tile especially the taper as the tiles go up. The level shows level on the tiles and ever so slightly tapered on the wall. Just looks like a total botched job, any comments would be welcome. A: As stated, there is inadequate mortar coverage. Please read this document on "spot bonding" from the National Tile Contractors Association. The bathroom was a gut job with new framing, subfloor, the whole thing. Trying to understand how the tile was installed with cracks and chips?? When pulling together the punch list this was a major item, the PM sent me a video of it looking repaired just a couple of days later and it looked fanstastic, but once I was home to see it in person the tile was still uneven in some parts and it looked like they just filled the chips and cracks with white grout! I have one final payment and several other punch list items that need to be addressed. Do I withhold payment until they repair it? What should I do? Does the entire floor need to be redone? Or can they pop out the problem tiles and replace? A: Who bought the tile? Who inspected it and carefully selected the pieces that were to be used and set aside those that were unacceptable (assuming that extra was ordered to allow for cast offs)? Where did the tile come from? It's a different game today with all sorts of manufacturers offering different quality products. That is why we are involved in the selection of tile and approve the selection. Looks like a tile quality issue to us and an installer that installed what they were given. Could be wrong of course if they were responsible for the tile purchase. Case in point: we are installing a finicky tile right now that does not meet our standards but we KNEW this, had a lengthy discussion with the designer who selected and purchased the product and really loves the design. With a lot of extra care and steps, we can make this product sing and they are paying a premium for our expertise and the time that it will take to implement the process for a quality outcome. The inferior marbles are often mined and fabricated with cost considerations. They tend to be softer and cannot withstand the handling. Of course, to answer your question, you could pay the installer to remove and replace with other tiles from the order that are more acceptable.
