They do not honor their commitments and there have been continued cost increases throughout the project that started in late March and has yet to be completed in late July. This project was originally quoted to be completed in 6 weeks. They even made me pay more for solid core doors only to install hollow doors. I have had to work with subcontractors on my own because they have had a lot of attrition of their PMs, some of which were ineffective at project management. I don't understand what I'm paying this company for when I'm effectively managing the project myself. We were promised white glove service of not having to work with contractors directly and it has not been our experience at all. They have no respect for those that work from home and constantly require last minute contact which has been extremely disruptive to my job. In my vast experience, I have worked with countless contractors across our 3 properties and none of them have been this unprofessional and lack this much integrity. I caution you to stay far away from Elkstone as they have been a complete headache to us for months now. They will leave you with shoddy and sloppy work and will not honor their warranty. Not the case. **★★★★★ — Beau Grande, June 2019** > I hired Elkstone to finish my basement (about 1700 square feet) in March 2016, so this review is a bit late but can speak to the longer term quality of Elkstone's work. They were very responsive, quick to answer questions that I had, and willing to make a number of changes to the proposed floorplan. Their personnel had some very good--and stylish--recommendations on how to obscure overhead venting, pipes, and a radon mitigation pipe. They worked closely with local suppliers to match my existing house's trim, wall colors, and design motifs. You cannot tell that it was added four years after the house's build date! > > It's now been three years, and I have had zero problems with any of Elkstone's work. They use quality materials and employed quick, reliable personnel who clearly had the expertise needed to get the job done and done correctly. > > There are two areas that I feel the prospective client should be aware of prior to hiring Elkstone. Neither of them are reasons not to hire them, but just some minor inconveniences that I encountered. First, if you choose to use another supplier or subcontractor for an aspect of the work (I decided to use Costco for carpet instead of Elkstone's contractor), you will need to be there and coordinate that work. I assumed the Elkstone project manager would be there to let in the carpet guys, but that didn't happen. Second, their overall electrical engineer had some definite ideas about what he wanted in terms of lighting. I had to argue with him to get what I wanted when what I wanted went against what he felt should happen. The man was an expert in his field, and the quality of the electrical work was fantastic; he just was a bit stubborn at times if he didn't like what you wanted to do. In the end he did do what I wanted. This was three years ago, so the gentleman may not even be there anymore. > > Again, neither of my cautions are reasons to avoid Elkstone. They were very competitive in their pricing (indeed, about $15000 less than another bid for a very similar floor plan), their workmanship is fantastic, and they were a joy to work with. We had them come out for a free quote as well as company that is owned by someone in our neighborhood. Steve was our salesman. He asked what we were envisioning and what ideas we had. He gave us an idea that we hadn’t even thought of. It was brilliant and utilized the space beautifully. > After a couple weeks, we received the quote from the other company via email. They didn’t break out the cost for each item nor explain what they were even going to be installing (carpet/tile/etc). They were WAY over our budget. This made me extremely nervous. > Steve came back out and went over all the costs, showed us a 3D model, explained the VCCs, and explained exactly what was going to happen. I couldn’t believe how nice everything was going to be. This made me even more nervous for the price. He showed us how much it would all cost. It WAS in our budget, even with the VCCs! I was so excited! He said to think it over and let him know when we made a final decision. As soon as he walked out our door, my husband and I said we were going with them. > Construction started very soon after. Our PM was Brandon and he was very helpful. Any questions or issues we had, he handled it. Construction was slated to take 5 weeks (with a 1 week break over Christmas), so 6 weeks total. There were a few things that came up along the way, but Elkstone took care of it and made sure we were happy. > Our basement has been completed for over a month now and we absolutely love it. We only have around 590 finished square feet but our friends think it’s larger than that because the space has been utilized so efficiently. I do like their itemized pricing and most of the cost was reasonable.
