.
I design and build primarily Craftsman style homes. I spent many years in the field learning the trades to the level of a Master Mason and Master Carpenter. I got my start by building homes for the developed mentally disabled and physically impaired through out the state of Indiana.Because of my knowledge and commitment I was asked to design homes for these clients. I also designed, developed, wrote the course curriculum and syllabus and taught technical trades at Valdosta Technical University. Custom homes are a passion for me. It’s about fulfilling some ones dream in a cost effective way that sets them apart from the norm. I do have an eye for scale and balance which are the basic essentials for any project. In my spare time I design and build furniture ranging from a modern to a primitive style, yes I do commissions. Golf is my favorite past time, gardening the second. God bless and all the best to you. I have recently retired. I thank all of you for your business and friendship.

> Hello, we hired Rusty Borders of K.O.H. Construction Corporation to design and build us our dream home. From the beginning to end Rusty was readily available to answer questions and guide us through the process. Rusty took great pride in differentiating our home from others while keeping cost competitive. Our home has several unique features including a waterproof deck system above our patio adjoining our walk out basement, a custom fireplace mantle that coordinates with the hand made widow and door trim in our great room, a custom walk in shower, split vanities, stone columns on the exterior and much more. Should we ever downsize, K.O.H. will be our preferred builder.

> We have built two homes with KOH Construction and have been thoroughly impressed! Easy to work with, not only works to stay within budget, but offers cost saving suggestions. Provides attention to detail and recommendations that add both beauty and value to your home. We have also had a couple furniture pieces built by KOH. Again, impressed with the quality of work on these timeless pieces.

> Rusty Borders from KOH built a new home for us after moving from a home we lived in for 35 years. He had renovated this home on the outside and our daughter bought it. The new home is behind the old one and it is beautiful. It is in the country so sepic tank, well, and finger systems had to be installed. He worked with all county employees and contractors, which were many, and made sure all were up to code. He was able to change the original plans from 3 bedrooms to 2 and added a sunroom. He worked with me as I wanted an Arts and Craft look and everything is more than I could have wanted. He built cabinets in living room to accommodate our large TV and multiple tapes, CD, DVD's etc. Again they are perfect. I wanted large doors to accommodate a wheel chair and bars in bathroom when and if they are needed in the future. The doors are my favorite thing, five panel which look like old school doors. Crown molding and floor trim are stained dark just as requested. James Hardie siding on the outside is great and he made pillars on the front porch which we love. There have been issues after moving in which we expected and Rusty has gone above and beyond to make sure we are happy with the finished product. We love our new home!

## Community Q&A

**Q: Consistent window and doors sizing** *(in Windows)*

I want to replace the sliders and windows in the back of my home. The two doors and windows are visually the same height. However, the rooms are different heights and I want to increase the heights of the widows and doors to eliminate dead space above.

The bedroom height is 8'. The living room height is 10'. The family room height is 9 feet. The sliders are 80" in height and are located in the 8' bedroom and 9' family room. Is it okay, to increase height of everything other than bedroom?

The bedroom is on the far right. Living room window is in the middle and family room sliders and windows are to the left (in front of table and bar). e attached picture

A: You realize you'll be raising headers and a lot of drywall repairs

**Q: I need new ideas to decorate my corner fireplace please!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have had the same vase full of sunflowers & candles for far too long, it’s time for a new look!

A: a free standing art piece may work

**Q: Baseboard Diffuser - Odd Size, Can I Install 2 Standard Size** *(in Heating & Air Conditioning)*

I have a very large HVAC air return in my living room that requires a 36x12x4" extended triangular baseboard diffuser (old house). I have not been able to find anything that fits the bill and the old one we ripped out was a built in wood one that was full of mold. Is there any reason why we couldn't install two 18" ones immediately adjacent to each other (with the correct support underneath to make sure they don't fall through the center)? Thoughts? Has anyone done this?

A: There would be no problem with that. Have you tried a local HVAC supply shop?

**Q: modern Pivot door with a mortise lock (any locksmiths or door co.?)** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I just got this beautiful modern pivot door and thought I would get a tubular handle...before I realized all the complications (i have to lock the door every time my kids leave or behind me when i come in with groceries). So I am thinking i need a mortise lock- will it work with such a big heavy door? do i have other option. I am considering the adelaide (in black) below. any suggetions?

A: I installed several lock sets like this. As long as your door is 1 3/4" thick and the lock set is set up for that, then no problem

**Q: Best quality & painted finish - Medallion, Kraftmaid, Diamond, Shiloh** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Cabinet shopping is NO JOKE!

I have quotes from the following companies for white, shaker style cabinets. All have soft close/full extension drawers. All are maple with MDF inserts. Specs seem similar and pricing is all in same ballpark (least expensive is Diamond and Medallion then Kraftmaid and Shiloh about $1.5k more) Just trying to determine if any are considered better quality - especially in their reputation for painted finish holding up?

Is it true that a lot of these lines (specifically Medallion) have the same quality build with the only difference in their levels is customization?? Seems like it should be more than that.

Medallion Silverline
Kraftmaid Vantage
Diamond Distinction
Shiloh (regular - not Aspect or Eclipse)

And finally - to throw in a wild card I'm going to get a quote for Waypoint because a local kitchen shop sells that and would be one stop shopping. I gather they are lower quality? Or are they worth considering if a good bit less?

HELP!!!

A: I installed Medallion in my last 25 plus projects. I really like them. The finish and construction is second to none.

**Q: expansion joint around the perimeter of my bedroom slab?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Doing a renovation of the guest bedroom, I ripped up all the flooring and had to cut some of the wall bored. I find that there is an expansion joint between the concrete block wall and footer and the main floor of the bedroom. I thought the footer and the slab was supposed to be all one piece? What should I do about this expansion joint, try to seal it up with caulking maybe?

A: yes, caulk is all you need to do
