> Artistic Stairs made and installed our interior spiral metal stairs. It was a disaster from the beginning. After months of waiting for them to manufacture, they arrived to our house in December 2022 with the made stairs to install. They forced the big metal stairs through our back door, completely damaging not only the new stairs but the door jambs as well. Once in the room, they found out that they mis-measured 5 months prior, and the spiral will not fit but they attempted to install anyway. In process, they burnt our brand new hardwood floor while welding without fire blankets and deposited black spray paint on our fresh walls. So after many hours of making incredible mess, out the spiral went because it would not fit. So that meant to cut it in 3 sections ( all indoors ) and drag it out.
>
> Few months forward, May 2023, they attempted again. They came to install….again. Unfortunately they modified this aluminum product too many times and we ended up with 3 different sheens of paint and brush strokes, even though we paid for nice powder coating. The welds are absolutely terrible and unbelievably messy and sloppy, and some posts don’t even fit onto the treads. Some details were missed altogether like they truly couldn’t care less!!! The spiral itself is not levelled and it’s tipping backwards so you can lose your balance stepping onto the first top tread.
> Organizational skills and project managing professionalism is extremely low. The high quality of craftsmanship, knowledge and attention to detail is definitely NOT there with this company. They should not be “selling” metal spirals because they can’t execute above the level of “less than average”. Their motto “On time every time Done right the first time” is a plain selling tactic and a straight up lie because the reality is, they can get TWO tries and still drastically under deliver !!
>
> I would really want to see the Artistic Stairs and Railings executives putting this sloppy, clunky and poorly made staircase into their homes. On their website, I read all about the company’s pride of the product they make…..are their standards that low then??? If that’s the case, they need to adjust their price list then because they do charge too much for a “D” quality product.

> I am extremely pleased with the railing installed by Artistic Stairs in my new home. Both the sales person (Greg) and the installer (Chris) were fantastic to work with. My project was somewhat complicated but they were both very patient with the long process. The railing is truly a masterpiece and has added much appeal and beauty to my home. I would highly recommend Artistic Stairs without hesitation.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Hardwood stairs to join two levels with natural hickory - indecisive** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We have natural hickory flooring on the main level of our house and are about to run the same flooring throughout the upper level. The narrow staircase is currently carpeted. We want to replace the carpet with hardwood (with a carpet runner for safety) and replace the handrail at the same time. I don't like the look of a light handrail (natural hickory colour), but I think the ebony stained look would be too stark / jarring. What we are thinking of doing is putting natural hickory (or ash, or maple) treads, white painted pickets, and a slightly darker stained hickory (or ash, or maple) handrail and post. I am thinking that if we have the rail and post at least two stain colours darker than the flooring and treads it will be enough contrast without it looking too stark. Does this sound reasonable? Attached is a photo of our fireplace in the living room. You can see the tone of the hickory floors. The built ins and mantle are topped with oak that is stained a little bit darker than natural. I'm thinking maybe we could piggy back off of that mantle tone to repeat on the handrail (which starts in hallway adjacent to the LR). Maybe we should even do the handrail and post in oak (???). So two questions, I guess. First, is the overall idea of having the handrail slightly darker than the treads and flooring an ok idea. And second, any advice on the wood species for the treads, rail, and post?

A: You would be safe going with Oak for the handrail and newel post with the same darker stain as your mantle. The black railing would look great too as suggested by egee above with the carpet runner tying it all together.

**Q: Stairs - Cove Molding?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need to decide if I want to add a cove molding to my stairs. The tread will be stained dark, and the risers will be painted white. If I have the cove molding installed, I think I would choose for them to be stained dark as well. I'm thinking the molding provides a bit more of a finished look, but I'm also thinking it may make my stairs look too traditional. Can anyone help me with this decision within the next hour?

A: If you like the traditional look then the cove mold will help achieve that. If you are going for a contemporary look, then stay away from adding molding.

**Q: Stairs in two storey foyer** *(in Design Dilemma)*

This is the view from the front door for the stairs we have running to the second floor. This is a two storey foyer. I asked the builder about the wall on the side of the foyer (right hand side in the pic) and he indicated it is a weight bearing wall and cannot be removed. I had envisioned the stairs to be open with railings on the right side of the stairs when walking up (the left side is the living room wall).
I am concerned the wall running up to 9' height in a two storey foyer will look odd. Interested in your thoughts and views. Any way around having this wall?

A: See attached, is this the wall you are referring to?
It does seem a bit odd to have a wall there. Perhaps it could be taken back to the corner of the overlooking second floor and just leave a post in place to support the corner of the floor above.

You could then put in a glass railing system like the below.

**Q: Staircase lighting** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I just had the staircase carpeting removed and replaced with wood and now have a problem seeing the first few step edges on the decent. I do have sconce lighting at the top & bottom of the stairs however, it's not something we think of switching on when it's daylight and that's when we have a problem seeing the steps.

Any ideas?

A: You might consider lights that can be installed quite easily into the treads, risers or stringers. These lights are from Seven Colours or Eyeleds.

**Q: Need help enclosing a staircase that leads to a master bedroom** *(in Design Dilemma)*

From the kitchen, there is a staircase that leads to a master bedroom (used to be a loft). I need to somehow enclose it to make it more private. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A: The barn door idea is brilliant! Just make it a glass sliding door instead of the glass swinging doors and you have a winner.

**Q: Beautiful staircase** *(in Photo Questions)*

Could tell me the inside and outside diameters please. Thank you

A: This is an oval stair so will not have a standard radius throughout. The stair is 48" wide. We have to pull the original cad file to confirm the diameter.
