Some windows have been replaced with white vinyl, so we will continue this throughout to save money. Question is; what colour soffit / fascia / eaves and also what colour shingles / roof would be a good choice with this brown brick/wood? We plan to replace front doors to Black 3/4 privacy glass. We want to modernize the look and take the cream away from the house, so... what colour? Location is Southern Ontario, Canada. A: Dark colored soffits make a building feel like it is looming overheads and sort of comes down on you. Light colored overhead surfaces tend to rise up and lift your spirits. They also allow more light into the house. Don't use a white though, use a softer off white. The lack of strong contrast will make your house feel warmer and less disjointed. For your room I would suggest Certainteed Black Walnut or similar in another brand **Q: Shutters or not?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Design dilemma: my house is a reddish brick with white trim and black shutters. I would like to have true, working shutters with hinges...But the 3 double windows are too big for true-to-size shutters (each window is 3x6ft) So I have 3 choices: 1. Only shutters on the single windows, with a thicker trim around big windows. 2. No shutters at all, 3. Shutters as they appear on the drawing, which would not actually cover the big windows. Please help! A: \#3 Don't worry about them being the right size for the windows. The house needs them on all windows and if you remove them the side windows are too small for the space they occupy **Q: What color should the drip edge be?** *(in Design Dilemma)* We will be installing Landmark Driftwood shingles. Our house will be painted a medium gray and all trim/fascia/ soffit will be painted white to make Marvin Ultrex white windows. What color should our roof drip edge be? Should it be white like the trim? Our supplier recommended black. Any advice? I am thinking the gutters should also be white. Thank you! I want a quiet color not an in your face color. Any suggestions? A: You can't pick colors like this. What an accent color should be has to be determined by the other colors on the walls and trim to be effective visually **Q: Exterior Accent Color** *(in Design Dilemma)* Would love thoughts on the best accent color for our house. The window boxes and door are actually different shades of maroon (not red), but they both need a facelift. Would love to add a little pop. Thanks in advance! A: You don't need punch colors as much as you need to make the colors you have tie the house together. Simplest choice would be a brown red ( lose the red/maroon completely) so it accents the brick and body colors. You don't need to do much else. A punch color for the front door would be great if you want more color. The house is almost there and with this slight color change will look whole and lovely. **Q: Need White paint color help for a big room** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are about to paint all of our fir trim and ceiling white.The walls with be the same white as well. I know some people are not happy about this but our fir is orange in color, beat up and tired. It looks dated and we are replacing our cherry floors with white oak floors. Any thoughts on going bright white with decorators white or softer white with white dove? A: Do not use WHITE! It is cold and glaring. Use a softer off white with a warm undertone.
