## Community Q&A

**Q: HELP!!! Box beams and reclaimed mantle?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am struggling with this one big time. I really wanted reclaimed wood beams for our home but the cost is more than we are willing to swallow. Our builder does box beams out of cedar but my fear Is that they look to perfect. Any advice? Also, if we did cedar box beams, can you still do a reclaimed wood mantle and barn door? Or does it all need to match?

A: Have your builder build the box beams out of rough sawn pine with all the edges 45 so there are no butt joints. Then distress the heck out of the pine beams to make it look like reclaimed wood to match your mantle and barn door. Then you could have the mantle and barn door built out of pine also so all the color and distressing matches. Good way to distress the pine beams is using a wire wheel on a grinder, good luck

**Q: Kitchen update** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Need ideas on how to update my kitchen in an inexpensive way. Already upgraded the counter tops and painted the cabinets. I feel like it’s missing something to look better but not sure what to do.

A: Add light rail molding to the bottom of the upper cabinets. Makes the cabinets look bigger and more defined.

**Q: Schluter type trim edge for 3/8" thick tile?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm in the process of remodeling a master bath. There is a platform that runs the full length of the bathroom (about 130"). The platform is the base of the tub and shower (The edge doesn't slope..only the shower floor). I'm using large format, rectified porcelain tile. I'm struggling to find a good edge to use in the appropriate size. I like the Schluter "L-stick" in bronze. Locally, I can only find it in a 1/2" size which accommodates the thickness of just the tile. My tile installer said it isn't thick enough for both the tile and the mortar and I really need something that is 1" (not 1/2"). Does anyone have any recommendations for a "bronze" colored edge that comes in 1". The options I found jump up in size (for stairs) to over 1". I really don't want that large edge since the platform will lose it's "sleekness". My tiler says the thicker mortar is necessary since this is on the floor and must be thicker than the walls. The bright aluminum isn't a good option aesthetically and the tile isn't a "color-thru". Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A: I ran into this problem a few years ago, homeowner decide not to use pencil trim and wanted to use schluter jolly edge after the majority of tile was pretty much installed. We had 3/8" thick porcelain tile so the schluter need to cover all the unfinished porcelain edge and about 1/4" of thinset. We ended up getting the larger 1/2" wide schluter jolly edge and taking stainless steel round washer that were only about a 1/16" thick, tripling them up and using them to furr out the schluter 1/8" off the wall helping to make up the difference. We took hardibacker screws and screwed the schluter edge to the drywall using those washer to furr the edge out, then we thin setted the edge in and installed the tile. After the tile was installed and grouted, we caulked the gap between the schluter edge and the drywall and then painted the caulking and it looked great.
I would highly recommend getting the larger 1/2" schluter edge, hope this helps and good look

**Q: Is this acceptable for a shower rebuild** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Very unhappy with the quality of tile work by my contractor. Specifically the grout lines are wide and un even in several large areas. He gave me some bs excuses. But I think this is not acceptable quality. His bullnose arrived late and didn't wait to place that before the surrounding tile. The top of the inset is a mess

A: Unfortunately it looks like a sub par tile job, grout joints vary in thickness, uneven tile and looks to be unlevel tile. I would recommend at the very least regrouting with a dark charcoal color grout to help hide those joints.

Little advice on the next shower niche try a picture frame border around the niche so the edges can be a 45 degree, its a clean look with small grout joints and all my clients love it, Good luck

**Q: Kitchen remodel** *(in Remodeling)*

Right now the dishwasher handle blocks the drawer to the right of it from pulling out, Im not a huge fan of the modern flat but will coinsider when replacing. However furthermore when the dishwasher is open I can't reach the lower cabinet or the two double cupboards above, which happen to be the only two double door cupboards so they are where my dishes and cups go. This makes unloading really obnoxious. (Also the back corner of lower caninate you can not access due to the dishwasher I can't put in a corner cabinet because of also) We are extending this island and removing the wall by the refridorator to create slightly larger kitchen (2 ft). We can move the fridge water line but I believe gas stove and disposal should stay since this home is on a cement slab. Any ideas to make the cabinate and dishwasher unloading more practical?

were also removing the wall above cupboards and thinking of extending to ceiling, thoughts?

Thank you In advance!!!

A: May want to think about getting rid of the soffit and doing stacked cabinets with inner cabinet and upper cabinet lights.
This kitchen had soffits and tall ceilings, we ended up demoing the soffits and putting these stacked cabinets with seeded doors so the homeowner could show off some of here kitchenware. Good Luck

**Q: Kitchen layout?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Thoughts on this layout? It seems a little impractical to me when I think of things like walking around the island to drain a pot of pasta, toddlers and a low microwave, someone sitting at the bar top while using the cooktop, etc. Maybe I’m just overthinking it.

A: You could place the cooktop where is sink is now and have the hood over that cooktop on the wall, then cut back that bar to the wall oven, install the microwave over the double oven and make one large island with a sink in it where the countertop bar is now
