A: We purchased a home for our sons to live in while at school, we rented the other two bedrooms to friend's sons covering almost all of the out of pocket expenses of water, electric, taxes, cable, et. Dorm rental rates started at $750 month and went to over $1500 for an apt in the area.  We saved thousands of dollars in rent over the 7 to 8 years collectively our sons were in school there.  It gave us a place to stay as well when we came up for a weekend visit.  We would make improvements on the home when we came, which our sons and often their roommates helped with. It made them more proud of their space to live in and they all learned some valuable lessons about caring for a home and fixing things. My youngest son even started his own garden in the back yard and grew much of what he ate the last couple of years. Now they have homes of their own and they know how to care for them. We sold the home at a profit as well after they graduated.
