## Community Q&A

**Q: Custom build house - bad tile job or am I crazy/too picky??** *(in Building a Home)*

We are building our dream home, and spending a lot of money to do so. So far we are really happy with how everything is turning out, except for the tile. I'm completely new to this and am not sure what is "acceptable," but I know this doesn't look good... All the grout looks messy (holes, uneven, big globs, not wiped down) and the layouts are awkward.

When I asked our builder about it he said the tile guys usually come back at the end and clean up the grout, fill in holes, and grind big patches away. I feel like this is strange... Why would they come back to clean up a job when they could have done it when they were already here? I don't have a lot of knowledge on grout, but does it make sense to put grout over grout to fill in holes and uneven spaces? And why not clean up the big patches when they were there instead of creating more work for them to grind them down later? Could grinding it down weaken the grout? Possibly chip the tiles?

For the master shower, there are places where they have tiny slivers of tile along an edge that just disappear into being filled-in grout. Where the bullnose meets the wall, the tile goes in and out and is no where near aligned or level with the wall. Our builder told me it was because the walls weren't straight.

For the floors, we have rectified porcelain, plank tiles. The grout seems super low in some spots and the corners are really sharp. But I keep questioning myself on all of this because I'm not an expert and maybe I am being too picky?

Here are a few of many, many issues I'm seeing:

A: Finish Tile work all about precision. The homeowner is going to have to look at it forever. Not sure if entire area needs reinstall or just certain problem spots. Sorry this happened to you.

**Q: design dilemma** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi. I’m wanting to create an alfresco dining/cooking/entertaining area by the pool. What are the essentials for an outdoors cooking area? And what’s the best design layout? I have a steel gas spitbraai which I’d like built in. Would like a serving counter? This will all go on a 3m x 2m concrete slab.

A: Here's One we Built on existing concrete slab. The client gave us the dimensions of grill, cabinets cooler and sink and basic layout of units. The structure is built out of 4" block, with a granite countertop. Natural ledger stone panels(6x24) to finish exterior.

**Q: Fireplace makeover: Raised hearth material dilemma** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi folks, we are finally tackling our fireplace. Putting silver travertine stacked stone on the face, a big chunky mantel from old barn wood, and thought we were using these faux slate capstones for the raised hearth. But we aren’t loving how they are coming out when cut.

So, any suggestions on another material? Granite or something similar? Limestone? Formed concrete? We would like a dark grey material. I’m just confused and can’t find what I really want. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!! Here’s a photo of our start.

**Q: Fireplace remodel** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am looking to redesign a fireplace that is 6’ wide and is white rock of some sort ans was designed 20 yrs ago. There is a chimney too. Fortunately its operated with gas heat. We live in Florida.

Just imagine you take handfuls of cement and you make this albatross of a fireplace. I am buying the house and intend to remodel before moving in. Thank you for any suggestions.

**Q: next project...update fireplace** *(in Home Decorating)*

What are your opinions for updating this fireplace? The room will be repainted in Sherwin-Williams colonnade gray. Trim color is a marshmallow white custom color from Benjamin Moore. I would love to add a thick chunky wood beam mantle. This is quite a massive fire place that takes up an entire corner of my living room but it does not feel grand.

My questions: Should we paint the brick, and if so what color? White or gray? Or should we reface just top half with wood moldings, and leave the brick exposed on the bottom half? Any other design ideas? I do like the brick, but I do not like the mix of red white and black bricks. (Re-tiling the whole fireplace is not an option.)

A: Dark Walls and Light colored fireplace would look odd don't you think? I would go grey on the fireplace and lighter color on the walls

**Q: Brick color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the brick color and/or who manufactures brick? Thanks.
