> We worked with Jeff at Ankeny Architects to develop plans for an unusual backyard palazzo we envisioned for our back yard. Jeff listened to us, studied the photographs we had collected illustrating what we were shooting for, and created an amazing set of drawings that pretty much represented just what we had in mind. Working with Jeff was easy and we 're extremely happy with the end result - a wonderful outdoor room for entertaining.1

## Community Q&A

**Q: should i get rid of the built in cabinets?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I will be moving into our new house. we are renovating it now. I can't decide if i should get rid of the built in shelves & cabinets to make the room look bigger or keep them for storage?

A: Maybe just keep storage/shelves at window and left side of fireplace. Removing cabinets on right side of fireplace will make room larger and still provide good storage. If your looking for a more contemporary look you need to remove cabinets and get new ones, refacing is not cost effective.

**Q: Top tips on what to watch out for when building a custom home?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi - looking for mistakes to watch out for when building a custom home or some tips to make a custom home even better?

A: Have a good set of construction documents/plans. This will help minimize change orders and unexpected costs.

**Q: Our kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I want to put an island in and some how redo and design my kitchen

A: You could wrap counter and cabinets around corner and have leg room for seating and counter at window but you don't have enough room for an island.

**Q: Kitchen island seating?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I will have an eating area at one end of a long island. The space for the seating is 48" on three sides with a 16" overhang. I would like to put 6 chairs around the three sides. Is this going to be possible?

There are no legs on this part of the island - more of a pedestal base made with a cabinet. I was thinking we could get 6 chairs if they are under 20" wide each.

Thoughts? Advice?

A: How about getting rid of base cabinet under table and have counter extend out to two legs. Make table only 30" deep and that should help your clearances.

**Q: Can you paint / spray exterior stone?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are interested in painting / spraying / white washing the exterior stone on outside of the house? We are thinking white. Has anyone done this? If so, do you have pics you can share?

A: I would not recommend painting but you could sandblast the stone to clean it up and make it look new.

**Q: Dining room help** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm hoping for suggestions on my dining room. The wine picture has to stay somehow since it was a gift from the in-laws. Otherwise open to anything. Thank you!

A: Sorry but the wine mirror needs to go. Can you hang it in the basement? Bar area? Make a wine storage area/cellar and put mirror there. Chandelier is out of scale with that table. Get larger table or smaller chandelier.
