LA and Orange County premiere environmentally friendly pool contractor.

Fluid Dynamics began in 1992 servicing pools in North Orange County. We quickly became one of the top companies in service and repair. Dave Penton, CEO, says, "We built our business the old-fashioned way, through word of mouth, customer referrals, and knocking on doors." Through hard work, attention to detail, and customer service the company quickly grew.

When one of our clients inquired about adding a spa to his existing pool, we realized it was time to broaden our horizons, and began offering construction services in 2003.

Fluid Dynamics is now an award-winning pool building company and a Platinum Member of Genesis 3, an international organization dedicated to cutting-edge technology and the latest in pool design and innovations.

In addition, Fluid Dynamics Principal -David Penton has been recignized by the Society of Watersahape Designers for completing the most rigorous education curriculum available within the pool industry.

We continue to implement solid construction practices and maintain our standing within the community. We work very close with all of our subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure that we deliver the finest products available today.

> We have had the opportunity to collaborate with Dave @ Fluid Dynamics on a few projects. His level of education and expertise is ideal when integrating our swimming pool cover systems, especially our HydraLux automatic pool covers.

> Dave Penton, owner/builder of Fluid Dynamics Pool and Spa, Inc., is my favorite and preferred pool builder for any of my projects I design a pool/spa or water feature for. We have worked together for over ten years on a wide range of projects. Dave has gone above and beyond in becoming knowledgeable and trained in the professional construction of custom water features of every kind.

> As a landscape architect specializing in residential projects I greatly value his consistent dependability, honesty, integrity, attention to detail, and the level of craftsmanship his subcontractors bring to every project. I also greatly appreciate the support he brings to me during the design and preliminary project budget development phases which assist me in helping my client's projects stay within their preferred construction budgets.
>
> Dave's passion for cutting edge projects that also supports sustainability and green philosophies encourages me and my clients to always strive for those goals too. He is truly an inspiration and I can confidently refer him to anyone who is looking for the best pool, spa, and watershaping company in the southern California area.

  - Description: Jimmy Reed, recognized as the premier installer of glass mosaic tile pools and spas, rescued this Laguna Hills Pool feature with a flawless installation of interstyle ceramic + glass materials from the Glasshues collection. The pool was custom built by G3D whiz David Penton, CEO of Fluid Dynamics, one of the top new pool builders in the country. Of course the tile work was done by Reed, President of Rock Solid Tile, Inc. The landscape property was designed by Alison Terry of Terry Design, Inc.

## Community Q&A

**Q: What is the tile used on the water line of the pool?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: National Pool Tile - SMS-Azul

**Q: Are those glass tiles in pool? Will glass tiles work in pool?** *(in Photo Questions)*

what is name of glass tiles or where can I find?

A: Glass tile can and is used in pools all the time. It is difficult to install properly, and the installation pricing reflects this accordingly... We install 7,000 - 12,000 square feet of glass tile in pools annually, and have had amazing success with it. The key is having a pool glass tile specialty contractor perform the work.

**Q: hello** *(in Photo Questions)*

I just like to know how much his pool will cost

A: The budget for this project was just over $200,000

**Q: Lighting design?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you tell me the lighting used and pool finish?

A: On this project we used Pentair IntelliBrite LED fixtures in the pool, with a custom blended color Pebble finish based on Tahoe Blue. We are currently using the new Pentair GloBrite LED fixtures in all of our projects... They are the latest generation lighting technology available from Pentair. I believe we used FX Luminaire for the landscape lighting. I hope that helps!

**Q: Do you do projects in Temecula?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Depending on the scope of the project, we will look at anything in the Southern California area. Please visit our website, and send me an email with further details.

Thank you for the inquiry.

**Q: Pool finish** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hello, We love this pool!
I am hoping you can tell us what the pool finish is. It looks like pebble tec but I can't tell if its mini or not or what the color might be. Ay feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

A: StoneScapes is a PebbleTec alternative. It is definitely no smoother than PebbleTec brand it is simply a different manufacturer (think Coca-Cola and Pepsi). PebbleTec is a brand name, they are the inventor of the process, and as such there are some definite advantages to using their product. There are also some good alternatives that can be slightly less expensive like StoneScapes. I personally use both products regularly on pools that I build.

PebbleTec and Regular StoneScapes are definitely rough! Properly troweled they will smooth out, but they will never be absolutely smooth. Mini StoneScapes is definitely smoother than regular, BUT that does not mean that it is smooth... PebbleSheen is similar to Mini StoneScapes excepts that it is diamond polished the following day to smooth it out even more. If you like the look of exposed aggregate finishes, then this is probably the best alternative for the smoothest finish. Just make sure that you are using an authorized PebbleTec installer!

Another alternative you may like to consider is BeadCrete. It has a similar look and feel to PebbleTec, yet it is much smoother, because it uses glass beads rather than small pebbles. The glass beads are much smoother (think little marbles) without the sharp corners inherent with rocks/pebbles.

I personally am planning to install quartz or PebbleSheen in my own pool when I build it. The difficulty with these surfaces is that the startup process is often not done properly, and this results in an uneven surface appearance. The beauty of quartz/Sheen is that you have a surface that is significantly smoother than any of the exposed aggregates. Quartz though can become rough if not properly started up. But unlike pebble it is still much smoother. I like to compare it to 200/400 grit sandpaper...

For the most smooth surface available, you can consider Hydrazzo. It is more expensive, but its fully polished marble surface is by far the most elegant and smoothest of the non-aggregate surfaces.

I noticed in another discussion the option of glass tile was floated... PLEASE be very careful if you are exploring that option. We install glass tile, and I can tell you that the waterproofing alone should be about $40,000 for a typical 15x30 pool (450 square feet). Anyone claiming that they can tile a pool for $30 per square foot is not following the TCNA (Tile Council of North America) standards for installation. It is not uncommon for all tile pools to be well in excess of $100,000 for the tile installation and material alone...

My recommendation for you to explore would be in this order:
Hydrazzo (Aquavations)
PebbleFina (PebbleTec brand)
Quartz (QuartScapes, SGM or another reputable manufacturer)
PebbleSheen (PebbleTec brand)
StoneScapes mini
PebbleTec/StoneScapes regular

One final thought...

We often install mini pebble in the spa, and regular pebble in the rest of the pool. The reason is that in a spa is where you have the most intimate and continued contact with the material, so it is nice to have the smoothest option available in that area.

Best of luck!
