So far we have a newer layout for the island and a corian counter top. We did a new backsplash 2 years ago and ahve stainless and black appiances. But I hate my cupboards. I hate that they are not to the ceiling, I hate that they are cathederal topped, I hate the color, not much that are redeemable to me. My husband says that it is just not in the budget to tear out and replace--we have done it to other kitchens and this one is by far the largest and most expensive to do--plus if we go that far there are other issues I want resolved. Anyway I am looking for suggestions on what to do--paint, restain--how do I reface--is it worth it. Any suggestions would be helpful. Showed photos from all angles in the kitchen eating desk area. Thanks. A: Refacing will generally cost you about 40% of a new kitchen and the results are pretty outstanding. You'll have the ability to change the doors and even the colour and finish if thats what you desire. The space above the cabinets could be concealed with cove moulding (Which is to basically box in the space and apply a crown moulding up to the ceiling) If you know a good handyman or carpenter they should be able to do that for you at a pretty reasonable cost in the same finish. The bones of your kitchen seem pretty good I don't see any need to completely tear it all out. Best of luck! **Q: Curtain heigth** *(in Design Dilemma)* I've had my eye on these paisley drapes from PB, but I'm not sure what size to get. I like the puddled/pooler look against wood floors, but not sure how it would look against my carpet. Like a nice 1-2" break like in the picture. Any opinions on this? I've read about how hanging curtains high gives the impression of a taller room. From my carpet to the top of trim measures 84", but the brakets for the curtain rod make it about 86" from the ground. Carpet to ceiling measures 96". Minus a few inches to puddle, and thats still a really high curtain. Should I order the 84" panels (hang on rings and no puddling) or the 96" panels (hang on the rod and puddle)? A: Hanging your drapes with the rod up to the ceiling gives the illusion of a larger room and will add vertical interest to the space. By hanging your drapery at the window height you'll be slicing the entire room along the 7' mark. Definitely get the 96" panels, you won't regret it. **Q: How do decorate this huge wall ??!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Do I hang shelves or pictures ? A: I think you can do some amazing things in the space! First, that wall really is the focal point in the room. Find something that really anchors it whether it be built in shelving and consider having the television built-in to the centre of it all. Once you've anchored that wall with a large piece of furniture, a collection of art both 2d and 3d, photos and accessories would be since touch. Whatever you do make sure you play up on the architectural features of the room. **Q: Need help with kitchen dilemma!** *(in Design Dilemma)* I'm putting in new granite countertops, dark coffe color, should I put it all the way up wall as backsplash or just standard height then do contrasting backsplash A: For a cleaner look, don't install the 4" high granite backslash. Install your tile backslash from the top of the counter up to the bottom of the upper cabinets. **Q: Sink Style/Color** *(in Design Dilemma)* I am installing Crystal Bisque colored cabinets in our kitchen. I like the look of the farmhouse sink. Should I try to match the sink color to the cabinets, or is it ok to install a white one?? Thanks so much for your help!!! A: The white farmhouse sink will look far better than trying to match the colour of the cabinets. Think of the sink as a focal point, you want it to stand alone. I would select a countertop the pulls everything together. **Q: can you replace space for a table in an eat in kichen with an island/table?** *(in Design Dilemma)* really want an island but there won't be room for a table and chairs. Can put a table and chairs in the den/family area next to the half wall. A: In a recent kitchen renovation we did, we replaced the eat-in dining table for an island of the exact size and it worked in that situation because the homeowner has a formal dining room. I think its a great idea if you have a dining area/room. Your kitchen will seem much larger, you'll maximize storage and depending on the layout of the island you may be able to still seat the amount bodies you did when you had a table.
