Ryan Singer Design specializes in private coastal residences, carrying forward a professional lineage dedicated to site-specific architecture. Based in Laguna Beach, the practice is defined by a commitment to "one project at a time," ensuring that every home is a singular, deeply considered work.

My approach is rooted in a "discipline of seeing," where the 3D design process is used as a tool for extreme predictability rather than just aesthetics. By honoring land, light, and microclimate, I create homes that feel inevitable rather than imposed.

This is my offering: homes that are deeply considered, quietly confident, and unmistakably yours.

> We chose Ryan for a number of reasons, first and foremost because he carries on the legacy of his father, Mark Singer, who designed and built our house in Laguna Beach 20-plus years ago. We have found Ryan to be quite talented, visionary, and most importantly, creative with solutions for any design accommodations that may come up.
>
> Due to our life style changes and family downsizing, we needed to convert two bedrooms/two baths into a second master suite and a study to suit our current lifestyle. It was an involved project and required several changes during the process.
>
> Ryan was always available, communicative, and ready to be on site when needed. He is not only the perfect person to follow his father’s footstep, but also has the creative energies to work with and guide us along the way. He is meticulous at every step and we could not recommend Ryan more for your design needs.

> I have worked with Ryan on multiple projects over the years all with great success. First on remodels and more recently on a home design from the ground up for a home that bridges the gap between modern and southwestern. Ryan has great design ideas that I would of never of thought of on my own. He is very passionate about design and is able to listen well to his clients needs.
> I highly recommend you reach out to him no matter how large the project.

> I highly recommend Ryan Singer. He helped us with a major remodel about 3 years ago and we are extremely happy with his work and overall design vision. Every person that walks into my house are completely surprised and impressed with the level of craftmanship and detail that his capable of. I would hire Ryan for any and all future work.

> My husband and I feel very lucky to own a Mark Singer designed home in Laguna Beach, California.
>
> Our home was built in 1990 and we purchased it in 2004. In 2006, we contacted Mark Singer's office as we were interested in doing some exterior renovations. Mark referred us to his son, Ryan, who also is a designer.
>
> We contacted Ryan in 2006 and have been happy to know him for 10 years now! Ryan has been wonderful to work with. We started the design process with him in 2006. Ryan is thoughtful and never rushes the design process. He provided us with excellent design ideas and was open to our suggestions and ideas as well. We always appreciated that about working with Ryan. He provided us with computer renderings as we explored various ideas.
>
> In 2008, we had to put our project on hold for several years due to a challenging economy and some family situations. We found Ryan to be patient and understanding thru all of that.
>
> We re-engaged Ryan in 2012 to resume the design process on our exterior renovations. Some of our project ideas has changed in those years, and Ryan was always there to suggest appropriate modifications to the design and materials.
>
> Ryan was awesome at being there for us every step of the way in getting the design review approval in Laguna Beach--from creating the plans to contacting the listing service letter to organizing the neighborhood meeting to attending the design review hearing. He was great!
>
> We were so delighted when we received approval on the project in January 2014!! We had a newborn baby at the time and were not ready to begin construction.
>
> We re-engaged Ryan at the end of 2015 as we needed to get an extension on our design review approval. Ryan was there for us again like he always had been. We received the extension and then Ryan created the structural plans for the project in early 2016. We were again very happy when he worked with us thru that process, and those plans were approved in May.
>
> Construction began in June 2016, and Ryan has visited the site several times to provide more design input, answer questions of the general contractor, and provide more plans as needed in the process.
>
> Ryan is a very talented designer. He is patient, responsive and open to his clients' ideas and wishes. Ryan has impressive experience in all aspects of the process--from the design to submittal to approval process. And he will be there for you during construction... Invaluable! We can't wait to add photos of the finished project!
>
> Thank you, Ryan, for your hard work and 10 years of collaboration!!

> I am fortunate to live in a house designed by Ryan Singer. It was love at first sight. He was able to present pure modern with warmth of wood, stone and sunlight. Modern and Organic.
> His creations are planned and intentional with detailed styling.
> He is very down to earth and wonderful to work with.
> If I have an opportunity to build another house, I would ask him to be the architect and interior design.

> We loved working with Ryan. His ability to take our vision and carry it out created a beautiful design in our home. I would highly recommend working with Ryan.

> Honestly, we were on the fence about hiring an architect. You watch enough HGTV and DIY shows, and you think you have it all figured out...especially when you're talking about a "simple" and "small" project like building out a small bedroom and adding a shower to an existing bathroom. Thankfully, some good senses kicked in, and we hired Ryan, because it has turned out to be one of the best decisions we have made on this project.
>
> We know Ryan usually deals with much larger scale (and upscale) projects, but not once did he make us feel like our project was "too small". In fact, he was incredibly responsive (by email, text, phone), and very quick to turn around design ideas. He held our hands throughout the whole process of getting everything permitted with the city. Without a doubt, he saved us from making some incredibly costly mistakes. To boot, he's very down-to-earth and easy to work with. Did I already mention he's incredibly responsive? Because it's worth mentioning again. When you're going back and forth on design ideas and options, and all the crazy concerns you have as a homeowner, you want someone who's going to respond right away. We would absolutely hire Ryan again in a heartbeat for our next project.

> Ryan truly understands the idea and importance of space and exercises restraint when designing....This is not always easy to do, because it requires perfection in juxtaposition and materials. I have collaborated with Ryan on a few projects and he was such a joy to work with. His talent and enthusiasm is so inspiring!

## Community Q&A

**Q: Where is this cabinet from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hello Kate.
Since the sink is the vessel type the countertop sits around 32" AFF (above the finish floor). The cabinet is about 24" high and the counter top is about 2". The cabinet should be securely fastened to the studs and you can create a durable French cleat system which will help with the installation. As far as plumbing, my client asked to maximize storage and so the design of the upper cabinet is "U" shaped to create a gap around the vertical drop.
I hope that helps!

**Q: Color of house?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What color was used on this house

A: Hello @htsai14752. Thank you for appreciating. It's a pretty sophisticated color I picked about 8 years ago and I always work with new colors. This particular paint job used Dunn Edwards because they are higher quality paints, and I remember looking at Benjamin Moore fan decks to select the color. It really brings out the colors in the landscape and other architectural elements.

**Q: Exterior** *(in Photo Questions)*

Beautifully designed exterior.

A: None of this wood is ipe. it's a similar type of wood which still looks incredible like the day it was installed.

**Q: can i just pick the table** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hello tdtaormina. Do you mean you'd like to purchase the table? It's a standard turn around, we need to custom fabricate and it takes 8-12 weeks from ordering to delivery.

**Q: The grass pyramid is fabulous. How is it constructed?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: We stared by constructing a CMU wall that's 8' x 8' square and about 42" tall with weep holes open at the bottom to release excessive water pressure. The box was filled with rubble and sand and we built a perimeter border 15' x 15' with redwood and also placed rubble and sand to build up the base (between wall and perimeter boarder). There are redwood diagonals which are left in place to help create rigid corners and then extra sand was used to help level and float each triangular side. A poly fiber mesh wraps around each of the sides and tied before applying the soil and grass layers. The mesh has a rough texture and ensures traction preventing the soil and plants from creeping down the diagonal faces.

**Q: Is it a fundation wall ? who made this?** *(in Photo Questions)*

We are interested in this finish, on a wall à the main level of our house. How is it made?

A: Yes, you are right about the poured in place concrete... There are so many concrete installations that go wrong because they don't follow the details properly. There are some good systems out there and so ways to do it even more fool proof. What you want for the inexperienced builder is the fool proof methods, otherwise you're looking at moisture and efflorescence and potentially big lawsuits. So hire an architect who knows what they are doing! ;)
