> I have worked with Duane on three projects now. It’s always a pleasure to work him and the rest of his very professional team. Hundred Mile House is a known and respected name out here in the high desert. I’m always meeting new people who know Duane and Hundred Mile House and they all have great things to say.

**Comment from Hundred Mile House:**

> Thanks so much! Been fun working with you on every project, and we're looking forward to the next one!

> HMH is a dream to work with! High quality work, attention to detail, and the team is a delightful. The process was really fun, starting with several options on how to design the space, reviewing drawings, looking at samples for various finishes....They took care of everything each step of the way. And the result- an absolutely stunning house. Highly recommend!

**Comment from Hundred Mile House:**

> Thanks so much Natasha! It’s been an absolute pleasure working and collaborating with you on your home. I know you’ll be enjoying it for years to come! And thanks for the referrals as well.

**★★★★★ — RyanRinck, Sept. 2026**

> We’ve been working with Duane at Hundred Mile House on the renovation of our midcentury home in Palm Springs. From the beginning, Duane has had a really thoughtful approach to the house and a strong understanding of what makes the original architecture special.
>
> We wanted to modernize the home and make some fairly significant changes, while still keeping it connected to its Palm Springs character. Duane has been great at balancing those two goals. He has a strong design eye, pays attention to the details, and has helped us think through everything from the larger architectural decisions to materials and finishes.
>
> He’s also been patient as the scope and some of our ideas have evolved throughout the process, which we really appreciate. Renovating a home involves a lot of decisions, and it has been reassuring having someone who understands both the design intent and the practical side of bringing it together.
>
> We’re excited to see the project continue to take shape and are very happy with the direction of the renovation.

**Comment from Hundred Mile House:**

> Thanks Ryan - been a pleasure working with you both and we're looking forward to moving into construction now that it's permitted!

> We are in the throes of our joe coffee Palm Springs design and build out - and we couldn’t have asked for a better partner then this team - Duane and his team have been joined at the hip with us - having been a new Englander my whole life they challenged us with innovative designs which kept our east coat joe vibe come alive on the west coast but we adopted the feel and vibe of the west coast / Palm Springs into our new joe coffee Palm Springs location. Soon to be opened in January 2027! Reaponsive, experise, customer focused , and a pleasure to partner with ! Looking forward to watching the new location come alive this fall !

**Comment from Hundred Mile House:**

> Thanks Glenn & Mark - we're honored to be working with you on this project, and also with the building owner on the restoration of such a historic building! The finish line is in sight!

**★★★★★ — Julia Chasman Design, Sept. 2019**

> Duane Smith if Hundred Mile House executes my design ideas for a complete hut renovation of my Joshua Tree house, Quail’s End at Joshua Tree. He offered several versions of my concepts and substantially improved upon my original concept. In addition he handled all the permits and helped source local vendors in the area, supervising the build most of the way. Hsiang is a lovely, talented person whose work is always superior. I recommend him highly! He’s a pleasure to work with too!

**Comment from Hundred Mile House:**

> Julie - thanks so much. We're working on another project in your neighborhood and I drive by your house periodically and am reminded of how fun it was to collaborate with you on it! Hope you're doing well.

**★★★★★ — HU-334172276, Sept. 2019**

> Duane is very easy to work with. He has an excellent eye for design. He follows through from concept to completion. He is very respectful of budget constraints. He is completely comfortable dealing with complex budget spreadsheets and simultaneously choosing the perfect tile.

**Comment from Hundred Mile House:**

> Thanks very much! Our processes have only gotten better since we worked together as well, with our full construction team in place and much more thorough budgets and job schedules now. We've come along way since 2019!

**★★★★★ — Shore Development, Sept. 2019**

> True professional with undeniable talent. I received many options to pick from. Duane was able to see my vision and MORE!! He also provided help with contractors and keeping me on track and on budget.

**★★★★★ — Rachel O'Connor, Feb. 2017**

> Duane at Hundred Mile House is a fantastic professional and an ideal partner for an architectural project. His work is creative and beautiful - but perhaps more importantly, he puts enormous emphasis on understanding the site, the experience we want to create, and the kind of family we are. He walked us through the process, timelines and fees up front, and then delivered to those expectations -- while being flexible and responsive whenever we'd throw him a curveball. We've also seen and experienced other examples of his work, and what they have in common is that they are beautiful spaces (worthy of any design mag) that are also warm, comfortable and engaging.

**★★★★★ — Michele Yeeles, Dec. 2016**

> Duane helped us while we were house-hunting in Palm Springs by visiting properties with us and quickly visualizing potential renovations and plans and estimating the construction costs. He's positive, professional and a very good listener who understood and interpreted our wishes into his design concepts beautifully. Once we close on our new place, we will be hiring him for our renovation project.

**★★★★★ — marc lange, Nov. 2016**

> Duane has worked with a number of my realty clients at various stages in their process, from walking a property before purchasing to discuss renovation options, to designing their dream homes on empty lots. He's a creative, collaborative architect and always a pleasure to work with.

## Selected projects

- [Chino Canyon Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/chino-canyon-residence-pj-vj~2160837)
  - Location: Palm Springs, CA
  - Photos: 47
  - Description: This project is a renovation and addition to a custom-built home built in 1954 at the base of San Jacinto Mountain in Palm Springs, California. The original layout, post-and-beam construction, wall of custom wooden windows and unique architectural detailing are reminiscent of Cliff May’s iconic Rancho homes, yet the original architect is unknown. The primary goal with the program was to maintain the unique character of the original structure while upgrading the home to be more energy efficient,…
- [Pond Ave Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/pond-ave-residence-pj-vj~2160958)
  - Location: Wellfleet, MA
  - Photos: 24
  - Description: This home on Cape Cod was inspired by the mid-century modern heritage in the area (architects like Marcel Breuer and Walter Gropius did a lot of work here) as well as more subtle Cape Cod elements like the concrete seawalls and the rich black-brown pine tree bark. The mixture of glass and black-stained mahogany siding was intended to blend into the forest, and the inverted room arrangement with living space on the upper level raises you into the trees and provides a view of the tidal marsh nearb…
- [Cahuilla Hills](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/cahuilla-hills-pj-vj~7887857)
  - Location: Palm Springs, CA
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: This parcel is well-known in Palm Springs as “the one with the rock outcropping”. Significant topographical features and incredible views of the valley and mountains have heavily informed the design, with a primary home and accessory dwelling unit hugging the rock features and allowing for strategic views and privacy at the same time. A bold palette of thermally modified wood, Italian brick veneer, and Cantera stone come together to create an unusually warm, modern retreat in the desert where gl…
- [Paradise](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/paradise-pj-vj~7887858)
  - Location: Cathedral City, CA
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: The parcel for this new home in Cathedral Cove has lovely desert and mountain views, but is surrounded by existing homes. Our goal was to selectively open up to certain views while creating privacy and multiple outdoor “rooms” for the owners to live outside throughout the winter. Multiple floor levels hugs the natural grade but also raises the bedroom wing for unobstructed views to the north. Construction is planned for 2025.
- [Mars House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mars-house-pj-vj~7893480)
  - Location: Joshua Tree, CA
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: The client wanted a bold, minimal desert retreat for their family. Exposed concrete and lots of glass were their only requests. The site is relatively flat with no features of note, but opens up to expansive views of the Mohave desert with Joshua Tree National Park in the distance. We wanted to open up to these views from the living space and main bedroom while creating privacy from the road. Public and private spaces adjoin to form a T, creating the opportunity for a private, sheltered patio of…
- [Inverness Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/inverness-residence-pj-vj~7917196)
  - Location: Inverness, CA
  - Photos: 5
  - Description: This project is on a waterfront site with views across Tomales Bay. An existing 2 story, deteriorating home was removed from the site and a more appropriately-scaled single story home is planned to sit lightly on the site and open up to the breathtaking views. Two primary suites on either end of the home each have views East and South, and the primary living space is both generous but intimate, achieved through the use of an L-shaped space plan and a step down into the living area. The use of st…
- [Clark and Frey Renovation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/clark-and-frey-renovation-pj-vj~7917202)
  - Location: Palm Springs, CA
  - Photos: 24
  - Description: This was a major restoration of a 1949 California ranch home designed by Albert Frey & John Porter Clark in Old Las Palmas, Palm Springs, California. The primary goal with the program was to restore the simplicity of the original structure while reimagining some of the common areas to be more spacious and functional. Through a larger kitchen, thoughtful built-ins and a reimagined primary bedroom suite, the home is more livable and family-oriented.
