## Community Q&A

**Q: Help with counter top and backsplash colours** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Looking for colour suggestions: drop ceiling will be removed and fluorescent fixtures replaced with pot lights on dimmers (one circuit of four in the centre area and one of three - one above the sink and two over peninsula). Cabinets will be stained a slightly darker, less orangey tone. Floor is white marble-like porcelain tiles. Initially I thought of a speckled soft white countertop and a light grey glass tile for the backsplash (not subway, tired of seeing that layout), but now wondering whether it would be better to reverse the colours and go with a mate light grey countertop, perhaps with a hint of cream (my dh thinks something with a bit of a warmer tone would look better, I'm not so sure) and white or very light grey for the backsplash.

A: If you go with the darker wood stain cabinet, I think that going with the cream color countertop and the light gray backsplash will be a good look. Unless you are wanting to create an overall darker look in the kitchen, I would keep the cream white countertop because that against the dark cabinets will allow the space to feel more open. To get an idea of this, I would go on pinterest and type in exactly what you are wanting to see inspiration photos! Good luck!

**Q: tile powder room and wood floors throughout?** *(in Flooring)*

We have beautiful wood floors throughout the first floor of our house. We have a powder room right off the front door and the wood floor continues into it but our toilet leaked and has badly damaged the flooring immediately around the toilet it. We have already replaced the wax ring and the leaking is worse. I am so frustrated at this point that I’m ready to rip up the floor in the bathroom and put in tile. That said I love the look of the wood and don’t want it to appear choppy. Does anyone have a photo they can show me of a similar situation with a very small powder room with tile and wood floors against it? I’m really sad about having to take up the word but at this point I fear that we will either have to pay a lot of money to have it repaired and replaced with the possibility of this happening again or live with a badly rippled floor.

A: Have you considered waterproof vinyl floors? It would keep the look of hardwood, but they are much more durable than real wood, plus waterproof! Some great dealers are Shaw, Mohawk, and DDC.

**Q: Fireplace update** *(in Home Decorating)*

Need ideas of how to update this fireplace. We painted brick white. Hubby wants tv over fireplace . Replace mantle? Or paint and lower it? Replace metal surround? Add shiplap or stone to wall?

A: I totally agree with the above comment. I like the wood mantle I wouldn't get rid of that but have a different idea. I suggest updating the metal surround and having a white brick going up to the ceiling. I think it will make the fireplace stand out more and then you can add back a wood mantle to that similar color over top of the brick and add a tv or art on the mantle. I'll post some pictures of what I'm thinking.

**Q: Daltile Broadmoor Platinum 13 in. x 20 in. Porcelain Floor & Wall Tile** *(in Flooring)*

Hi, Houzz Community,

We're looking for just a box of Daltile Broadmoor Platinum 13 in. x 20 in. Porcelain Floor and Wall Tile (BM011320HD1P6).

We originally purchased it from Home Depot and installed it in December 2013. A few months ago, a drunk driver ran a truck into our home. Amazingly the floor had little damage except for a few tiles.

It's a long shot, but I've seen others post here for advice trying to find a discontinued tile and have offers to ship them tile. I'm happy to purchase a box, if you have any extra.

**Q: kitchen counter update-from granite to....?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Me again. Considering an update from builder grade granite to something a little more modern. We have white cabinets, light gray subway tile, stainless appliances and dark mahogany floors. Walls are currently goldish but will be changing that too. What is a good upgrade for. Punters?
