**★★★★★ — BGC Ocean Drive Partners, LP, Feb. 2022**

> Ross was instrumental in taking my own vision to the next level and helping me see the potential for much greater improvements. An outstanding design was conceived which resulted in a home with much greater value and livability. Ross and his team were a pleasure to work with and I highly recommended A4 Architecture.

**Comment from A4 Architecture:**

> It was a pleasure helping you and your Family Corporation and take the that "diamond in the rough" and make it shine brightly!

**★★★★★ — Plum Interiors, June 2017**

> I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Ross Cann. He's well versed in the history of Newport and weaves those historic elements into his modern day architectural practice. His style is lovely, classic and always appropriate for the setting.

**Comment from A4 Architecture:**

> Eileen of Plum Interiors is a wonderful design talent and A4 Architecture has been pleased to collaborate with her and her company.

**★★★★★ — Don Wineberg, Jan. 2017**

> Ross Cann and the team at A4 have done an excellent job designing a new tennis and paddle tennis facility for the Yacht Club of which I am Commodore. They have showed great creativity in addressing the Members' needs for the facility and great sensitivity to, and patience with, the very deliberate nature of Club approval processes. The plan is in context with the neighborhood and will be a beautiful building when built. Their fees have also been quite reasonable.

**Comment from A4 Architecture:**

> It has been our pleasure and honor to work with you and your team!

**★★★★★ — TINA Stephens, Jan. 2017**

> Ross Cann and A4 Architecture are a pleasure to work with. They provided us with an extremely visually appealing retail space that is also very functional. Ross kept a sharp eye on costing, and always tried to get us the most 'bang for our buck.' He is not only very good at what he does, he is also very personable and very easy to work with. I highly recommend him.

**★★★★★ — dbiederman, Jan. 2017**

> Ross took on a difficult street facade assignment for us in Providence. He had a superb Can-do attitude, did excellent architectural drawings , and charmed very grumpy stakeholders. I recommend him very, very highly

**★★★★★ — Neal Hingorany, Jan. 2017**

> Good firm to work with, great presentation using modern software. Good visual presentation in 3D. and very in tuned with historical district + standards.

**★★★★★ — gk4780, Jan. 2015**

> I have worked with Ross and A4 on a number of projects with great results. In one instance as a selling agent i introduced Ross to my clients who wanted to to completely remodel an expensive condominium and they could not have happier with the quality of the services or the project costs. A4 worked as both project architect and project manager.

**Comment from A4 Architecture:**

> We are always pleased to help and are happy that the project turned out so well! Thank you for you fine recommendation!

**★★★★★ — askswipe, Jan. 2015**

> I engaged A4 Architecture to produce a site plan and renderings for a very substantial, multimillion dollar, mixed use project. The design has been shared with a dozen or more people and unanimous opinion supports a 5-star rating for this firm!
>
> The process of creating the design was well organized. There was significant participation and interaction by the design team to ensure my vision was transformed into a tangible document. I have worked with other architecture firms on other large scale projects, and A4's approach and results are certainly the best I've seen in 30 years of project development.
>
> Hats off to A4!

**Comment from A4 Architecture:**

> Thank you for your kind words and we look forward to our continued involvement with your projects!

**★★★★★ — Groundswell Designs, Jan. 2015**

> We recently held a review of architectural concepts for the renovation of an athletic facility, and we invited A4 to participate, based on the company's knowledge base and prior experience. Not only were we delighted with A4's work, but the company's concept, presentation and illustrative materials were able to capture and inspire the imagination of our audience members. A4's renovation concept was forward-thinking, but in a way that was respectful of the history and culture of the surrounding area. The design was beautifully detailed, but also creatively addressed the macro needs of the entire site. Outstanding design work aside, the company's customer service has been well above par; Ross Cann has been accessible before, during and after the charette to answer questions and provide additional support. I would highly recommend A4 based on this experience.

**Comment from A4 Architecture:**

> It was our pleasure and privilege to be able to work on the design!

**★★★★ — rhinoracing, Dec. 2014**

> A4 designed and supervised the building of an attached garage to a large 1880's Victorian home in Newport RI. They also worked with the lawyers navigating the complex historical review process which alterations of classic homes in Newport require. I was happy with my dealings with A4 and am very happy with the results.

**★★★★★ — stmontal, Aug. 2014**

> I had the opportunity to experience firsthand the quality of service A4 Architecture has to offer while I was a project designer from 2009 to 2011. During my time at the company, I worked on a variety projects including high-end residential, commercial, 3d visualization, and historic preservation. There are few design firms where proper proportion, contemporary sensibility, and practicality can be brought together in a single sophisticated design; and A4 accomplishes this task on every project.

**★★★★★ — katscan518, June 2014**

> I worked at A4 Architecture for 5 years. During that time I worked closely with the firm's principal and staff. A4 Architecture always went above and beyond in their efforts to provide the possible best design while paying close attention to the client's preferences and needs.

**Comment from A4 Architecture:**

> Thanks for the Shout out Kathleen. You were always a valued part of the TEAM!

  - Description: This project was the challenging renovation of a 1950's cape in Newport, RI. The owners requested that we convert the small outdated cape into a more traditional "shingle-style" home typical to the community during the late 19th century. The biggest challenge was that the owners wanted the building to remain livable during the construction. Our solution was to remove ungainly additions on either side of the main structure and replace them with gambrel ended additions with the central structure r…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Beautiful exterior..What is the type of cedar and stain? Thank you!** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Sharon is lovely. We have done work in Northwest CT just across the border. We used the IKO "Weatherwood" on this project but have recently been specifying GAF Timberline "Driftwood" or CertainTeed Landmark "Weathered Wood" where we are looking for the color and shadow of a cedar roof and the budget does not allow for an actual cedar roof.

**Q: What type of flooring ?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: In this instance we carried the cherry plank flooring into the bath cor consistancy, but this could also be done with the high quality laminates (like CorTech) now available for a similar "rustic" effect but in a way that is easier to clean and maintain.

**Q: Front Door Color** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Just moved in to this New England Colonial a few months ago and the front door desperately needs a new paint job. Going over the red seems too easy; what color would you paint this door?

A: Traditional iconography: "Red door, house is paid for." but the color has come to have a traditional colonial appeal. Matching the shutter color is also highly appropriate, although much less flashy.

**Q: Wood countertop on island or no?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I love the look of this and it will fit right in with our farmhouse style renovation. I have a copper apron front sink and dark wood flooring. We are doing antique glazed white cabinets. I want a dark wood top on my island (not butcher block) BUT, is it a workable area when it's wood? I can't imagine rolling out dumplings or pie crusts on a rough wood surface, all I can imagine is bits of flour and dough getting trapped in the wood grain or worse, blood from meats just soaking up and hanging out forever in my kitchen. Ew! Help?

A: Wood counters are relatively inexpensive, but very high maintenance. They are far more beautiful than practical.

**Q: Where can I purchase these in North Dakota or online???** *(in Photo Questions)*

Where can I purchase these privacy gates !!
Or how to make plans instructions

A: Lattice can be purchased at most lumber yards. This is 4"x4" cedar lattice that has been primed and painted and will last for many decades! The flat plastic stuff looks horrible and will actually diminish the beauty and value of a property in my humble opinion.

**Q: naturally weathered eastern cedar shingles vs weathering stain** *(in Building a Home)*

i am leaning toward letting the shingles naturally weather but i really want the silver/gray look and am worried it is going to take too long. we are by the water. i don't mind the lack of consistency in the weathering look. but again, i am concerned about the number of years it will take to get the look i like.
i've read about bleaching and weathering stains. bleaching stains i think will lighten the shingles more than i willl like. not sure if i like the weathering stains because they are so consistent.
any thoughts on how natural the weathering stain looks and how long the natural weathering process takes???
thank you!

A: Try to find a hardware store still carrying the old product to finish your work and then leave it to weather naturally. I always thought of the the bleaching oil as giving the cedar shingles a "head start" on the weathering process and a "boost" on their longevity, but always wanted the shingles to look as naturally aged as possible after 5-10 years. Some subtle variegation and differential weathering is normal, natural and (to my eye) more authentic.
