Currently, in my almost renovated bathroom, the thermostatic valve in the shower is backwards and you can’t get hot water. The shower handle rotates all around instead of turning off. The plumber broke the adapter in the control value for the tub and it needs to be fixed. The CEO says these are minor things. I shouldn’t be upset. Previous to the plumbing errors, the tile setters cut holes that were bigger than the trim for the handles. I had to send a picture to the company because no one was around to check on the work. The crew also used plaster and paint where they should have used grout. When I complained about its appearance, the CEO told me I wouldn’t notice it after a while. I had to insist that it be fixed. He also told me not to worry when water leaked from the bathroom into the kitchen on the first day of demolition. No one called to tell me there was a problem but there was a puddle in the kitchen after they left. And then he said it was because of our old pipes, which isn’t true. I have other examples of mistakes and cutting corners. When I asked what they would use to insulate the niche on the exterior wall, the project manager said it was a small area so it wouldn’t be needed. The designer was similarly nonchalant about doing the job well. She put in a tile order without even thinking about ordering pencil trim. Only after I asked did she contact the tile company to find out if any pieces were available. The list goes on and on. I wish someone had warned me before I signed the contract. As in its spraying south and the tub runs east to west. How stupid. The landlord says we can change it, but how to find a shower head at a right angle? We can’t like tear up the wall unfortunately as it’s a rental- any ideas? So grateful for any advice. A: LT if you don’t like to hold onto the showerhead when you shower you can get an arm and shower head that’s a rain shower so it will be spraying down instead of diagonal (spray other side of the wall) **Q: Range Hood Cover Help!** *(in Design Dilemma)* So are renovating the kitchen. Everything getting changed however cabinets will remain (they will be painted a soft white). Converting from a ductless to ducted hood so we are replacing the ugly black vent hood. Cabinet space over cooktop is 30”. Question... carpenter coming next week to discuss the wooden hood cover I’d like made. Do you think it would look good to raise the existing cabinets to the ceiling (they are 10 foot ceilings) and have him put a flat arched valance underneath with a simple shelf (or no shelf)? Any other thoughts on what could work? The hood will need to be flush against the cabinets due to the ductwork. Here’s my current kitchen... A: Yes Karen's "after" picture look great. You can do something similar to what she did or not put a cabinet above the hood. The only thing I don't like about other pictures that were posted is that top cabinets aren't level with each other and that the hood mill work is raised compare to other wall cabinets. Aesthetically it looks better to level all the wall cabinets. As for raising your cabinets to ceiling it all depends if your ceiling is leveled. If it's not, your contractor will have to modify the cabinet crown molding so that the bottom of all the wall cabinets align. Also need to make sure it will be comfortable to reach to things that are inside the cabinets if you do so. Hope that was helpful to make your decision. I think it's too late to take it out and put in glass. I'm planning on tiling the wall but is there anything I can do to make it pop and not look so closed in? Contractor said we had to take the wall to the ceiling and we lost a lot of the natural light. Any tile recommendations? A: Usually you can make a wall pop by using an accent tile. So you can tile other walls in lets say white tiles and then 1 wall to choose something with more designs on it or color that pops more. **Q: feature tile wall in bathroom** *(in Not Specified)* Renovationg bathroom want to use two different colour tiles , which wall is best to feature with one colour ? the bath wall the shower wall A: Yes, agree with the comment above. Please upload photos of plan and maybe the type of tiles you are looking at because they will need to be factored in your decision. **Q: New floors before moving in or after moving in?** *(in Flooring)* Just bought a new house and we planned to put in new floors (vinyl on the first floor, carpet on the second) everywhere before moving in. Gave ourselves a month to get new paint done and put in new floors. Now, we are having difficulty actually picking something (too many choices!) in time before moving in. We are now leaning towards moving in first and then taking our time picking out a new floor that we are sure about. Our new house is only 7 years old and the current floors (tile and carpet) are in very good shape. Also, we would like to update the kitchen at some point and we could conceivably do the flooring and new cabinets all at the same time. Is the hassle of getting floors done while living in the house so great that it’s worth the rush and the stress to pick out a new flooring in the next couple of days? A: As Molli said it will be of course more difficult to do the floor once moved in. You will have to keep moving furniture from room to room or from side to side to get this done so not only it will be more difficult but also will require more time. If you can't make a final decision you are comfortable, better not make it whether it will be more or less difficult to do that work. If you are able to push the move in date and get all the renovation done before of course it will be a plus. **Q: vanity gap, walls uneven** *(in Remodeling)* putting final touches in bathroom, discovered vanity and backsplash not fitting flush due to walls being uneven. if vanity is flush with backwall, then there is a gap against the side wall, i dont think caulking alone will do the trick, suggestions? A: Agree with above comment. Countertop should have been templated and fabricated to match the out of squared wall. There isn't much you can do at this point but replace countertop.
