> Jerry designed our guest home plans and did an excellent job. (See my earlier review.) Now that our build is complete, (courtesy of Renaissance Homes whom I would also recommend), I wanted to update my earlier review by saying that Jerry's plan proved to be both solid and workable during the actual construction phases. We made a few minor changes during the process (decided to add skylights and moved our laundry area to the garage to capture more closet space), but the final house is a gem of a design. Though small (under 600 sq. ft.), it has the feeling of a much larger space and has everything needed to live well and comfortably which is entirely due to Jerry's design. Thank you, Jerry!

> Jerome came highly recommended from a friend of ours who had also used Jerome on their project. Jerome easily understood our project ideas and quickly he gave us preliminary drawings to review. He addressed all of our questions promptly and made improvements that we weren't able to invision. We highly recommend Jerome.

> Thanks for the wonderful review Jerome. It was our please to work with both you and Maggie. House looks beautiful from the pictures. Nice job on the design. Please keep us in mind for any of your future painting needs

> We recently used Jerome DeMarco of ART.chitecture. The project was to design a
> complete remodel of a 70's ranch design into a NW contemporary home. We were
> very happy working with Jerry through the design and construction process. The
> project was managed to be on time and on budget which was very important to us.
> We highly recommend Jerry and ART.chitecture.

> We hired Jerry to help us design our forever home that would have that lodge feel you get from a Bend Oregon resort style home. We started from scratch with only our ideas and photos. Jerry met with us many times and adjusted the floor plan until we were completely thrilled with the layout. Our 3000 sq ft plus garage/shop project quickly turned into a 12,000 sq ft 2M plus overall project. Jerry was with us from start to finish and beyond over the three year build. He and Maggie were a dream to work with. We ran into many bumps along the way with our builder and county that would require quick changes in design and engineering. Jerry was so quick with responses, solutions and his engineering firm he recommended we use was as well. This was critical in keeping the project moving under the pressures involved in the building industry today. Everyone was so busy and understaffed due to the increasing activity in the housing market.Had Jerry not been so efficient we could have had subcontractors move on to other projects until we got solutions. We are so pleased with the home. Everything in this massive project scaled out to perfection for us through the design. It was a very long road to completion and I can say Jerry was one the best people we hired for this project. He stood by his word and was there for us throughout. The home has zero quirks that were the result of the architectural design. Couldn’t have been more pleased with Jerry and Maggie. Jerry truly knows his craft and we would not hesitate in hiring him again and recommending him to others.

> Jerry did an outstanding job designing a small guest house for our needs. He had no problem working with the many design restraints we imposed: a small space with lots of amenities that also had to match an existing structure on the property. He always listened carefully, had good, creative solutions and delivered it all in a timely manner. We hope to start the build within the next few months and will post photos when it's completed. We strongly recommend him!

> Jerome has done a stellar job in designing a home that meets our needs. His insight as to design has really been a godsend to us and we are really looking forward to moving forward in building what we consider our dream home. I would highly recommend Jerome.

> We hired Jerome DeMarco to design our new house in North Rim , Bend, OR. North Rim is known to have the toughest architect committee to get your project approved. Jerome had no trouble with it at all. We literally “zoomed” through all reviews and got approved during every stage of design process without any trouble at all. Our General contractor, who already built at least 6 homes in North Rim and knows well how much troubles architects and designers run into to get their design approved, was very complementary about Jerome\`s approach and work with Architect committee.
> So, from all that sea of designers and architects, why Jerome? Well, we had some concerns regarding our lot. We purchased a lot on rather steep slope. It had great views to the north and lots of sunlight coming from south. How to “marry” it all together? How to create beautiful spaces with the view filled with natural light all through the house? How to position the house so you do not drain your budget on just foundation and retaining walls when building something on the slope? Jerome took our concerns seriously. We exchanged lots of ideas, options, etc. and he was very patient and very creative all the way through the process. We literally discussed the amount of light and view in every room all the way though the house. Result: he came up with great floor plan and fabulous elevation ideas.
> Jerome is a very experienced and talented architect. He has an impeccable taste and a good eye. He always kept his word and never changed the deadline. We recommend Jerome for your project no matter big or small.

> Jerry designed a 660sf extension to our house, consisting of a new kitchen and dining room facing the north end of our property. The plan is to refinish the old kitchen and dining room as a library and music room. The extension included extensive decks and walkways to interface with an existing outdoor kitchen and a wine cellar in the existing basement.
> We were very pleased with all the work he did, we think he is highly creative, practical and very pleasant to work with.

> We hired Jerry to restyle the front and interior of our home. We needed an architect who had a sophisticated eye but a down home personality. We asked him to create a western rustic style design with a smart modern feel but suited for the pacific northwest. Our home has million dollar views so we could not afford mistakes. We needed someone who could shepherd the project but still let us participate in the evolving process. Oh my gosh we are so lucky to have found him...what a class act. He has a great eye, is wonderful to work with, and brings calm to the chaos! Just hire him, he is a pro, with professional training, but a wealth of real world experience.

> My wife and I engaged Jerry to design a master suite for us. We felt we had a good feel for the features we wanted to incorporate...but couldn't get our heads around an overall design that would work within our existing space. Jerry was wonderful do work with. He met with us on multiple occasions to understand our needs and expectations. He is patient, communicates and listens well. He is open to feedback, and iterations. He has coached us recommended colleagues for other remodeling work that we are planning. Bottom line, Jerry does what he says he'll do, when he says he'll do it...no surprises, no stress :-)...and BTW, we're thrilled w/the result.

**★★★★★ — woodnrock, Dec. 2013**

> Hello. My wife and I have been looking at house plans for quite a while. About a year ago we thought we found the one, We sat on it for about a year, Then after Jerry took a look at the plans and asked us a few questions we realized how much better a basic design could be with a few design changes and some fresh ideas. Jerry seems to be very attune to some of the details that can really make quite a difference, while personalizing a fairly basic design. Jerry has been very easy to work with.

## Community Q&A

**Q: painted white brick exterior with black gutters** *(in Building a Home)*

I’m mortified! We are putting up a painted white brick exterior and the downspouts are right at the front sides of the entrance. I hope you can see where the downspouts will go into the ground.
1\) Position- Should it move back along the same wall or stay where it is? What will be more obvious. I don't want my entryway to be frames by gutters.
2\) Color- Should I use white downspouts even though the fascia, soffits, window frames and gutters are black?
Your advice is appreciated.
Jen

A: Hi Jen, lovely house. Talk with your general contractor or gutter installer and have them run the downspouts away from the end of the gables and position them away from the front entry. You will need to move the drain lines in the ground to accommodate this type of request. Please have the gutter installer match the white brick color and if they can't have your painter take care of matching the downspouts to your brick. Best of luck. Jerome DeMarco ART.chitecture

**Q: Help on Bathroom Layout** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I’m left with a 6’ wide x 16’4” long bathroom, any ideas on how I should add a freestanding shower and bathtub? This was my idea but not sure about having tub inside shower area, or what do you guys think? Any new design or layout would really help, thank.

A: Hello HU, keep the wet room to a maximum of 7 feet, then 2'-6" for commode which leaves you 6'-10" for your vanity. Move the wall out 2" if still possible so you have a 7' vanity. Best of luck on your exciting project. Jerome DeMarco ART.chitecture

**Q: Wall lighting for dark stairwell** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are currently in the process of buying a condo, had our inspection yesterday and after a good look at the place I find myself needing help!
It’s a 2 level condo with a fairly steep stairwell. Here is what the stairwell looks like and the current light fixture. What could we replace it with that would a. give enough light, b. not be ugly, and c. be fairly budget friendly (i.e. a costly project requiring rewiring is just not top priority right now, I’d like to stay under $300).

A: Hello, go to your local light fixture company and ask them to recommend a fixture that will give you much better lightning and in your budget. Best of luck. Jerome DeMarco ART.chitecture

**Q: Exterior help for a 1950’s New England ranch (pictures)** *(in Paint)*

Our house is ready to be painted. Looking for ideas on colors and other ways to enhance curb appeal. The house is shingled which does not convey well in these pics. I am thinking a dark blue/ gray with white trim and black doors but open to ideas. The mismatched window trim needs to addressed. Painter suggested shutters which I do not want. A new raised panel white garage door is on order ( drawing attached). Photos are from spring and summer. Current color is olive grayish. It’s looks lighter in bright sunlight. All suggestions welcomed and appreciated. Much thanks.

A: Hi jjags. I do like your color selections except for the front door. You might consider making one of the two front doors a lot more prominent as I don't know which one currently is the actual front door. There are several ways to address this confusing issue including but not limited to the following; 1. Extend the porch out farther for the real front door. 2. Paint the non front door & railing a color that blends in with the siding color. 3. Address landscaping to help direct your eye to the real front door. 4. Paint the real front door a BOLD COLOR and not a shade of black. 5. Also, as you said, no shutters is a good idea. Best of luck on your project. Jerome DeMarco ART.chitecture

**Q: Kitchen Layout - Need Help with Questions** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are finalizing our kitchen layout and have a few questions.

Is it ok if the island extends beyond the cabinets on the short side? Current design shows it extends approx 23" beyond the cabinets.
Length of island - Should it go all the way to the end of the cabinets on the long side? Or should it be shorter as it shows in the current design? Or should it extend to the cabinets before the refrigerator starts?
Is it ok for the cabinets to be close to our french doors? The french doors will be 60" wide.

P.S. The kitchen opens to the den and there is a wall on the other side of the dining room.
Thanks in advance for any help or guidance you can provide!

A: HI Robin. If you move your island 6" away from the sink and 6" away from your range would give you a space of 6' between the end of the island and the french doors. And also give you 4' between the fridge and island. The 60" island depth is fine if you have 24" cabinets and both sides of the island. However if you only have 24"cabinets on the sink side of the island and 12" cabinets or no cabinets on the family room side of the island, your island countertop can be reduced down to as little as a 36" depth or even up to 42".
Best of luck. Jerome DeMarco ART.chitecture

**Q: Exterior design on a dated bungalow** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are redoing our siding (with a budget)
we want to do a modern design with some cedar, possibly 6 inch smooth bevel. similar to longboard look but cedar is more cost effective.
We are having trouble laying out and deciding on our design. At this point we want to do the wall by the door (with the hose line ) in the cedar. the front part of the house wthe the odd peak will stay as is. We thought wed do the fireplace stack in black and the wall beside the fireplace in the cedar as well. we hope to do all the fascia and trim in black. Would love ideas or different layouts. We are having trouble visualizing the final product and havent pulled the trigger yet. Also stumped on what to do on that load bearing post with the house numbers, hmmm

A: Hi ESS, consider using 1x6 T&G cedar vertically to match your porch post. Paint the address numbers black or change to contemporary aluminum or stainless steel numbers. Remove the shutters and paint the stem wall a dark gray. Lastly pant your front door a BOLD COLOR. And for a little more curb appeal, maybe straighten the entry sidewalk, pave the driveway and up date landscaping. I do like all your other selections. Best of luck on your exciting project. Jerome DeMarco ART.chitecture
