Designer who who has worked in design for roughly twenty years. I have worked for architects, designers and in healthcare. Primarily I work in commercial type spaces, but I also have worked on a few older homes and even newer homes. I have a NCIQ certification and I am also an IIDA member. I am a collaborative worker and I have come to understand that people do have different tastes and needs. I believe listening well to people and trying hard to truly understand the needs, wants and desires of each client as well as collaboration with others make for a successful project. Overall the designers job is communication by plan, sketch, computer whatever tool there is to the client the summation of a successful plan and strategy that works to help meet the needs wants and even some desires of the client - even though they may not be able to draw or even articulate the ideas. If a designer has listened well to the client and the team communicates well and is respectful everyone wins. **Q: Dining room echoe** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We recently purchased our home and our dining room echoes. I have added pillows, canvas pics, plants and a large rug.  I would appreciate any suggestions how to get rid of the echo. I'm afraid to add more furniture, I don't want to clutter my dining room

A: I'm assuming you hear this sitting down you will also need to add some sound absorbing around waist height to just above the head in a seated position it could be the sound is just bouncing around off the walls. Maybe a tapestry artwork or something closer to absorb some sound. Also the ceiling plans A big role in acoustics as well a completely flat ceiling works less well than one with some texture. You could download an app that measures sound decibel levels and test some things out more scientifically that might help with placement of items too.

**Q: Update the kitchen, or leave it alone?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We bought our house two years ago. It was only three years old at the time, so everything was new. We wanted to buy a higher end home, but settled on this cheaper one in a great location, but the finishes were not to our liking....sheet vinyl and carpet floors, laminate countertops, no backsplashes, anywhere. 
We did some renos before moving in (all new flooring on main level; quartz counter, vessel sink, new faucet in main bath; removed half bath in laundry area to create a mudroom and pocket office).

I love all the changes and they are the best things about the house. The upgrades stopped there, I am afraid for quite some time. There are still no backsplashes, and I hesitate to put one in the kitchen or master bath due to the laminate countertops. I feel I should replace them first, but there seems to be no reason to replace five year old laminate counters when they are still functional.

Most of the neighbors have quartz or granite, so the neighborhood does call for it, but it seems excessive to spend thousands of dollars to replace countertops that are five years old and in good condition and not otherwise "out of style." I wonder if I should wait a few years, until our kids are done with college and the counters are 10-15 years old or something, maybe out of date, and upgrade the kitchen then. It IS functional and looks ok, I just don't love it.   
I also constantly ponder if I want to paint the stained wood. I prefer the look of painted wood, but then I think that painted wood is usually of lesser quality, and you can't go back. I think the counters bug me more than the stained cabinets.   
So thoughts...should I invest in granite and a backsplash, wait until the counters look bad, install a backsplash anyways, get my house looking like I want right now for no other reason than I like it, leave it alone for a decade or so when money will be mine (and not for kids)? We have no intentions of moving anytime soon, so resale is not an issue.

**Q: Suggestion for accent color** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm thinking to paint the top wall above my cabinets so the whole wall doesn't look white. The granite is Santa Cecilia light . Floor is espresso. I was thinking like a mocha color .

A: Maybe a flexible led fixture to nicely frame this feature either that or a small fixture or even remove light and just add undercounted lighting instead.

A: Several places but this looks to be something called slat wall many different versions and iterations of this.

**Q: Special needs bathroom** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are remodeling our master bathroom to also work for my handicapped son.  He is 12 but mentally more like a two year old.  He LOVES to play with running water and will spray it everywhere.  We see going to use motion activated sink faucets so he can't leave the water running in the sinks.  My question is if there is a way to put a switch on the tub faucet to prevent him from turning on the faucet when he is in the bathtub. Currently we have to take the handles off the facet each time after we fill the bathtub.  We will be building a curb less large shower and making it a "wet" room with tiled walls and wall hung vanity. Any other suggestion to make it waterproof for a special needs kid while also being beautiful for me?

A: Offsetting the controls is fairly common maybe not in residential world but can be done by a good plumber. I wouldn't call it special needs. I would just call it learning differently or something like that. We all have different styles and paths of learning the term "special" over the years has a different and negative connotation. I think differently abled is better. Not to be a big PC lecture but words and terminology do matter especially to ones self worth.
