> We highly recommend the Stone Center.   We engaged them to change our granite kitchen counter tops to carrara marble and carrara marble back splash.   We talked to several different firms, but this company came in and brought up the most useful points in our decision making. For example, we were considering a Farm sink, and going to a one-level island vs. keeping the bar level on the island.  They offered insights we had not considered that helped us make educated, affirmative decisions on which way to go.  This firm was high quality, efficient, on schedule, on budget, and responsive communicators.  They discussed the pros and cons of Quartz v. Marble and encouraged us to look at the different options to be sure we knew what we wanted 100%. They offer a top of the line sealant for the marble and have done a lot of research and have tremendous experience in these different projects.  We decided on Carrara and couldn't be happier. We get so many compliments.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Durable dining table** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Looking for a mid-century/modern table that can be used daily and is very durable.  (Don't want to worry able spills).  Don't want glass because little ones will be using it.  Help!

A: For durability and easy-care, marble is not likely the best choice, though it is lovely. When properly sealed, marble is resistant to staining. However, it is still prone to etching if anything acidic (lemonade, ketchup, tomato sauce, vinegar, etc) comes into contact with it. I'm not sure if the above table is made from genuine marble, or a look-alike surface, but the etching is something to be aware of.

**Q: Calacatta Gold Marble...Quartz Alternatives...** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Just curious. I have seen many alternatives for Carrara Marble. Is there any good alternatives or quartz look-a likes for Calacatta Gold Marble...with both grey and copper veining?

A: In general, the difference between brands of quartz is aesthetic. They will all perform equally well in your kitchen. Some are slightly easier to work with from the fabrication end of things, but once they're installed, they're all durable, easy care surfaces.

**Q: porcelain slab countertops** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Has anyone had these installed these and if yes, are you happy with the quality, durability and overall look? They are gorgeous in my opinion.  I'm considering them for my kitchen counters and backsplash.  I am currently looking for a local installer for a quote.  Thanks.

A: B W, as far as the different quartz companies are concerned, the main difference is appearance and cost. Quartz slabs vary slightly in composition, and most reputable brands will perform equally well in your home. Some are easier or more difficult to fabricate, but once they're in your kitchen, they'll all provide a durable, easy care kitchen counter top.

**Q: Marble 101?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Just renovated 2 bathrooms and have done honed Carrara marble on the floors of both and on all surfaces in one walk-in shower. 

I know it's a high maintenance stone. What are some good tips for care? Bath products we should or shouldn't use? Favorite sealers? Cleaning products?

A: We regularly test sealers and Tenax brand Proseal continues to outperform all others. Here is a link to one of our sealer tests where you can see the difference:

It outperforms Miracle (shown in the brochure) and also Dupont (not pictured, but we have tested). It's what we use for all of our installations, we won't use any other after testing them all!

**Q: Cost of Marble Tub Surround** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We chose Calacatta Caldia marble for our bathroom. The fabricator is quoting $10,000 for a tub surround in one pice or $6,000 for a tub surround with 2 or 4 seams.  I have not found pictures of tub surrounds with seams. Any thoughts?

A: Seams are often necessary with tub surrounds, due to the fragility of marble especially when working with narrow pieces of stone. Often times, these can be placed in an inconspicuous place. A good fabricator/installer can line up seams well so that they are nearly invisible. Of course, this also depends on the veining of the marble. Ask your fabricator where the seams would go, and about how they would match the veining.
Likely, the price difference is due to the large footprint, and extra material, it would take to make from a single piece of stone. Also, the extra care and manpower needed to handle such a large, fragile piece without breakage.

**Q: granite vs marble** *(in Design Dilemma)*

hello
i am building farmhouse in india...so i wann know which is best for flooring granite or marble...generally weather is hot for most of d year kindly advice

A: As Skydell says, both will be cool to the touch. Marble is softer and more prone to scratches and etching. If you're looking for an easy care stone, granite is your best option. We generally recommend marble for lighter use areas such as bathrooms. However, as long as you know what it will take to maintain a marble floor, and are ok with the "patina" that it will develop over time, it can be a gorgeous option as well.
