**Q: need help to finish the tv/wall area** *(in Design Dilemma)*

What can I put here? shelving or potted plants cover the wiring? thank, Lisa

A: May I suggest another shelf set like you have, side by side, or one large enough to fill 3/4 of the space. Then I'd add just a few light weight accessories among silk plants on either side of the TV and more silk plants on the floor close to your speakers. This will help give your shelving more 'foundation' so the TV doesn't look visually like its top heavy. 
Although real plants are much more desirable, they do not make great companions for TV systems. But please choose silk that has some variation of colour in its leaves. 
Displaying your viewing paraphernalia in an artful manner will make it more interesting, especially if you add an occasional art piece or picture frame.

**Q: How to avoid can lights** *(in Design Dilemma)*

How can I adequately light a large kitchen without any (or minimal) can lights?  I am working on electrical mark up for new construction of my house and I don't like can lights. I have multiple task and eating areas to light, but I don't want to clutter up the ceiling with too many fixtures. My house is traditional with an old house feel. 

Same question for my large hearth room, which has a grid of box beams on the ceiling. Can lights are the go-to solution these days, and I need an alternative that won't clutter up the ceiling.

A: Have you considered cove lighting? It can go a long way to lighting a kitchen if placed away from the wall and directed downward.

**Q: Window size--fixed or not** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello: we want to add two windows flanking the fireplace. The brick beyond the actual fireplace itself in the center)  is only one layer thick and it leads out to our nicest view, the woods. We want to do 20 inch width or 22 if that is stock). 
My questions are:
1\) how far to go down--halfway or a long, narrow window? 
2\) fixed or something like a hopper or casement. I believe the casement is too narrow.

A: It would be good to examine how things would look from the outside of the house too, but I'd suggest the long style, with openings left and right. These will add a sense of height within your space that is needed. If you place the windows at least 12" away from the seat and level with other existing widows, you'll have a very cohesive look.

**Q: Need advice on choice of new cabinet hardware** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I really need some expert design input. We are putting new cherry cabinets in our kitchen that will be stained. Not too dark, but definitely wood-stained look.
Antique pewter that has a worked rubbed look with some gleam and some antiquing looks best with them, but I have not been able to find a design we like.
We're looking for traditional since the kitchen leans toward a Tuscany look. Every sample I order disappoints once I have it in the kitchen.
I know the group here has great taste and design ideas and I wondered if anyone could link to some images or products that might work?

A: If you would post close up pictures, please, of your cabinets and the hardware you've rejected, we could get an idea of your desired look from the combination of them.

**Q: Do you place light switch on wall tile or above?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We've purchased marble tile with a chair railing for our walls and I need to decide if we want the light switch, which is to the immediate left of the door, to be placed slightly above the chair railing or placed slightly below surrounded by tile.  We're good either way with local codes-it's a matter of preference and I'm stymied-this is not something I've paid attention to in other people's homes and need an answer this morning-help!  Thanks! A: Best is to go above the tile... Easier on tools, and future repairs. Especially if you're good either way.

**Q: What can I do with this wall space?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

The guest bedroom in our Florida home still has an empty wall besides the TV on my favorite dresser. The TV cannot be moved due to the cable outlet. What can I do with the remaining wall space. I have 80" from the TV to the corner of the wall on the left side and 76" from the TV to the corner on the right side. The photo with the window is the wall on the left side looking at the TV. A: Hello,
I have a couple ideas...
Is it possible to treat your monitor as a wall mount? If so, an extension cable can give you extra reach, then your dresser could hold just the birds and maybe a guest room amenities basket. A block of colour, such as a brighter cream to coordinate with your curtains could add oomph to your space and give the whole setting a larger presence to balance the whole room, without adding a lot of stuff.
