## Community Q&A

**Q: How do we finish this?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

The trim pieces do not fit against each other because the posts are too close.

A: Do you mean the post caps do not fit? I think the best thing would be to fashion some cap detail in a custom manner. I would have to draw it but let me know if you are referring to the post caps? Thanks

**Q: Need some ideas to restore my little house...** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need ideas that can bring back that slight art deco/minimalist
feel my house appears to have had in the beginning...
My little house was built in 1938 according to the town records. It is a simple Cape Cod style story and a half. It has gotten some updates since then so many of the original light fixtures are gone but the hall light appears to be original to the house as is the hardware on the built in linen closet. The interior doors are also original as in their hardware.
I think the wood floor is original but it needs refinishing. The areas where finishing remains are a honey gold. The doors and trim (where it hasn't been painted ) have a darker red brown wood finish. And thankfully the past owners left the arch between the living room and hallway along with its simple wood trim.
The kitchen has suffered the most as a modern kitchen was installed in the 50/60s complete with vinyl asbestos tile over the hardwood floor. The last owner then replaced much of the brass hardware with cheap "cute" hardware totally unfitting the character of the house.

A: The best part of old charming homes is the built-ins. A nice built in and painted book shelf or mantle detail. Even some ornate details when you redo the kitchen makes it feel more original, historic, rather than the "drywall" boxes and staged furniture we unfortunately see currently. A handyman or finish carpenter may be able to add some details for not too much money. Brass is a great idea for that era, the window lifts, sash locks, door knobs, hinges, and pulls on cabinetry is an inexpensive way to bring back that character.
