Shimi and his workers – sometimes five or six at a time – were meticulous and expert craftsmen, unfailingly considerate and careful. We wanted to find quality work at a fair price, and Shimi more than delivered. This was not an easy project either, because it changed as it went along and became still more complicated because of a major problem Shimi discovered during the work. > > I will summarize the entire project to give some idea of what was involved. We hired Shimon Rotches Construction after reading the reviews on Houzz. Our goals was to expand or possibly rebuild an aging wooden deck at our home in Pittsfield. Shimi came twice to examine the deck that was in place and was probably built on different occasions over the last forty years by previous owners of the house. We explained that we wanted to increase the depth of the deck by about four feet. After examining what was in place, he discouraged us from doing an add-on because there were reasons to doubt the solidity of what was there. We ultimately decided to rebuild from scratch. But Shimi cautioned us that because our land had a considerable number of boulders he could not be absolutely certain about the final dimensions because of some concern about creating the proper footing. In addition, he didn’t like the look of the underside of the house where the deck was joined, but would not know until the current deck was completely removed. > As it turned out, once the existing deck was demolished, it was clear that we were going to need to do something about the foundation support for the house itself. The deck abutted a porch room that was an add-on to the house, and the supports for that add-on were inadequate. Wood had dry-rot, cement block foundations were skewed and detaching, the footing was not deep enough, and it was necessary to see more of what lay underneath. This became a second project. Shimi was ultra-cautious, consulting with an engineer and then supporting the porch room with three jacks as he removed the footing that was there, coated the underside of the porch room with insulation, built supports, and worked with us to choose the best type of footing to permanently support the entire back room. This delayed our deck, but was absolutely necessary. At every point we were explained various possibilities. > Once it was complete the deck was begun. But it was uncertain what materials we were going to use. We went to the supplier Shimi uses and selected TimerTech Azec decking. We also came up with an idea for a border. And we chose a railing that we liked (builder’s rail, I believe it was called). It turns out that we had unerringly chosen some of the most expensive alternatives, so we had to renegotiate the price of the deck and payment terms. Even that did not cause unexpected problems. And the railing turned out to be a construction job in itself. > We ended up spending more than we expected but we knew that was because of what we wanted or what we needed. We were not paying for office overhead or automatic markups, and we saw the nature of the work on a day to day basis (and when we were away, Shimi kept us closely informed).
