## Community Q&A

**Q: Please help with this entry way, it's been a year** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Any ideas, whomever designed this entrance way I want to strangle them. Pictures are posted in my idea book labeled My entrance Way.

A: I'm not sure as to your budget nor the type of look you're going for though it would seem you're leaning more contemporary in style.  

If I'm right, I'd reconsider re-doing the railing on the stair case. Unfortunately I see who ever installed the flooring laid it very linear, while the material is a nice hue and quality looking,  my preference would have been to possibly lay it on the diagonal to break up the linear feel. Then again the space is very hard to see in conjunction with the surrounding area.

**Q: Painting my limestone fireplace yes or no** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My cream dirty looking fire place does not match my white walls and trim now. Would you paint it?/ and if so how would you explain to the painters how to do it?

A: Don't paint the limestone!

**Q: Backsplash and counter decision time!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are doing a semi kitchen remodel. I plan on doing a cream Quartz countertop to match the floors, bisque appliances (that are staying). I have narrowed it down to two counter choices shown below. One (left) is marble style, the other (right) has tiny specks and very faint marbles and has a yellow warm tone to it. Here's the million dollar question, I love this Jerusalem gold limestone as a backsplash, the tile shop I saw it at only has 4x8 which seems big!! Will this color of limestone flow well with my counter and cabinet choices? The current light maple are getting refaced to a mahagony brown with a hint of cherry. We are also replacing the current top mount cast iron sink with an undermount oil bronze composite granite sink with oil bronze pull down faucet. Need backsplash help! My style is warm colors with Spanish/Mediterranean decor. Thank you! The burnt orange wall color I love and is staying unless it looks awful with the kitchen remodel. We will also be extending the island 18" and adding decorative cabinets all around to make it look more like a piece of Furniture. Also we aRe having a custom range good made to match the cabinets. Any design advice is appreciated. The last picture is the what the cabinet color will be. Thanks :)

A: Ashley C,  that is part of the reasons my first comment was about using a quality sealer, namely dry treat. many of these other products don't do much in comparison.  If you email me I'll send you a link on the product and if needed will get it for you. 
It is pretty much the only sealer my company uses any more.

**Q: Pick my lighting!!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Coastal cottage style renovations underway...suggestions on lighting would be greatly appreciated!  Pictures are super helpful!

A: Agreed on the recessed lighting throughout the kitchen,  but limit the size and quantity.  seperate the one over the sink from the rest due to function.  But put the under cabinet lighting in LED tape.  

Also remember to keep the light color at 3000 Kelvin or lower to keep things from becoming to sterile and blue.  The lower the Kelvin rating to warmer the color tone.

**Q: Should I paint the paneling white or leave it original ?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Trying to update the lake cabin.  But scared to death to paint the walls. Anyone have thoughts?

A: Leave it. 
If you want to get rid of the wood overlay it with 1/8 or 1/4 drywall.  I'm not sure I would get rid of all the wood paneling but might consider breaking it up some with the drywall.

Also - whose jets are in the walls and ceiling?
