> David was brought in to design a new lake home on our farm, when the plan was to sell off the 43 year old farm house and some acreage.  We gave him a list of about 80 "thoughts" we wanted in a new home.  When the floor plan was where we wanted it, and we had a few exterior and interior renderings, we started pricing it with our Contractor.  We were shocked by how much new construction costs these days for a home that would be about 40% smaller than the old farm house.  That's when David started suggesting the changes that he could see in the "old bones" of the home that I had been living in for the past 30 years.  The result is the set of photo's on the home page labeled "Country Home Remodeling".  Basically, the old house had a hallway down the middle, with rooms on each side.  He suggested knocking out some walls and moving some doors so that the wasted space of the hallway could be turned into expanded room space.  Now we move through the house in more of a circular pattern, moving from one room to the next.  We even gained a half bath and a walk-in pantry with the new floor plan.  The master bath was expanded to include a walk-in shower, or actually a "drive-in" shower since it's wide enough to accommodate a wheel chair.  The feel of the house is much more open with the walls gone in the kitchen.  Now the kitchen complex, the primary space that people naturally congregate to, has the capacity to easily hold 14 adults, 5 grandchildren and 5 dogs (proven last Christmas).  The views are great also, so that a person in the kitchen can now see the flower beds, bird feeders, 6 pastures, 3 barns, and the big screen TV over the living room fireplace.  All in all, I'd say David has a good eye for what's possible in your older home.
